Planting Cherry and Jujube Trees | Is it Too Late?

With Spring essentially here we're trying to wrap up our Winter planting. Today we're sneaking in 2 more bare root trees. One is a low chill, self fertile sweet cherry variety and the other is a new Jujube.

    I got a bare root royal crimson and a minnie royal planted this year. I'm taking a chance because of the low chill offerings so they might do okay in our region of North Florida. I've lowered my expectations, but it sure would be nice if they managed to produce fruit in a few years and the birds let me keep some of it.

    Those are solid choices for those of us in low chill areas. The main issue we have had with them here is the root stock, so we're hopeful we can overcome that with this one.

    More nuggets! Maybe a rooster can help you grow some of your own? They should do more than be an alarm clock. Glad to see you finally got your cherry tree! Will you take cuttings, in a year or so, and graft them on root stock? Waiting three years is ridiculous.

    More nuggets seems to be the motto around here! I'm hopeful we'll be able to get Reid to graft from the cherry tree and if so, we may try them out on his rootstock. Fingers crossed we can get this one to take and produce some viable bud wood for him!

    I would also consider if you can find them adding 'Minnie Royal' and 'Royal Lee' nearby the Royal Crimson to increase yield overall and that way you'll have 3 low chill varieties of cherries instead of just one.

    @@EdgeofNowhereFarm Costco had one Royal Minnie and Royal Lee on Friday so I grabbed them; both Dave Wilson. I'm in Tempe so it is quite a bit warmer here. I have tried several cherries before including these varieties that haven't survived. Just too hot here I think. But I did plant a Coral cherry in full shade last year and it survived. I grafted Bing on as a pollinator. I grafted Lapins and Stella onto my Sweet Treat pluerry last year and those survived. I grafted several varieties onto the Coral cherry this year so will see how those do. I will find a shady spot for the two new cherry trees. Hopefully, all these cherry varieties will survive and will handle the sun better as they mature. I am also rooting Adara cuttings to try to use as cherry rootstock (because the Mazzard doesn't seem like it can handle the Tempe environment)

We haven't tried a cocktail tree before, but Summer Winds has been a solid source of trees for us in the past, so I imagine they will do well for you. As for peaches, our favorite is the FlordaPrince. It's a heavy producer of very sweet peaches. If you're going to purchase one, we highly recommend RSI Growers in Glendale. Why no amendments on new fruit tree plantings ?

  • @EdgeofNowhereFarm

    @EdgeofNowhereFarm

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey Steve. We've found over the years that choosing the right root stock (when possible) and supporting soil growth around the tree are the real keys to success. Our soil is actually very mineral rich, but those are locked up in compacted soil that is devoid of life and moisture. Encouraging that outward growth away from the tree is what drives growth and production, so amending the soil at the planting site keeps the tree from having to grow into the natural soil that surrounds it. Within a month or two of planting these trees we already find feeder roots 2 feet or more from the planting sight which is exactly what you want to see.

    We're right around 400 or so most years which is a bit higher than in the city. Usually we're about 5-6 degrees cooler than Phoenix and we tend to see chill hours almost nightly from about December through February. This year we even clocked chill hours in March, a few weeks after Phoenix stopped seeing them all together. We've seen over 500 a few times since being out here (2014 is when we moved to Wittmann). It's definitely time to get that thinning started on peaches. We'll be doing the same this weekend on our FlordaPrince trees.

I am going to try the newer chill hr Cherries, I'm not sure about heat, this year with the heat dome over BC fruit belt, it was a Wipeout, for 2 days in Canada hot spot historically Lytton BC we surpassed the Cali Death Valley temps, we hit 52 C, convert it, even the Devil cringes, and in the South Okanogan Valley if the weather just doesn't click, we loose some of the later cherries, and we hit 104 for a few days, usually every year. This year even took out all varieties. 28 Miles north of our Canadian summer location is. Dept of AG Research station, the location where the Lapin Cherry and a couple of other cherries, and we all know the Lapin, it is what every cherry now goes against. Enough, have you heard the High temp tolerance of the Royal ??? you just planted, I'm going to contact Dave Wilson and see where the test plots were, as it was. # til it passed muster and got a name. @@johac7637 I remember that heat belt that wrapped up into Canada last year and couldn't believe the temps you guys were seeing. Same thing for the Pacific NW here in the US. As for high temp tolerance, I wouldn't be able to say. Most of the fruit we grow here is ripe before we hit really high temps unless the fruit needs it to ripen (grapes actually get sweeter with higher temps). From the research I've done on this cherry variety, we should see ripening before June which would keep us out of the extreme heat.

    How should I go about planting a fruit tree if I have nothing but heavy clay soil? Would I need to amend it?

  • @EdgeofNowhereFarm

    @EdgeofNowhereFarm

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey Paige! You're describing our soil to a tee in certain spots of the farm. In fact, the jujube trees are in a very shallow wash that has hard clay that a PTO driven auger bit could not punch through. We don't amend our soil at all with the exception of bare root plantings (which you're seeing here and then only slightly). Proper root stocks go a long way in helping a tree spread it's roots out. In addition, heavy mulch in the area around the tree is key as this drives soil growth and allows the tree to spread it's roots horizontally. The addition of the tree rings you see us using will also help break up the soil that the roots need to grow into for the tree to be successful. That being said, a bit of amendments won't hurt at the planting sight, but keep them to a minimum (no more than 30% or so of the soil you put back in the hole). Trees will only get as large at their roots can spread, so they need to get used to that native soil right away.
