Plant Assassin Rambles: What is the point of wild potatoes?

Plant Assassin Rambles
Viewer question from oOSabianOo:
"Are there any benefits to growing a wild potato strain? I feel as if I'm missing something. I couldn't imagine someone growing say a wild yakon, then putting up a video showing how much smaller their yield is compared to a cultivated variety."

That book looks amazing... Thanks for the recommendation! I thought that we were sort of having a renaissance of breeders looking back to wild relatives for novel traits. At least in tomato breeding I guess (all the recently popular purple varieties), I don't know about potato market breeders. But I imagine the most important thing is the disease resistance genes that wild relatives may have (like you said) bc modern potatoes have so many problems with viruses and cyst nematodes! Also I think there could be varieties that aren't suitable for market gardening that may have some upsides for the home gardener.
