Ғылым және технология

In December 2014 I made six short videos. This is one of them. It features the Planetron 8-Track/Radio Space Age Hi-Fi.

Every show has it's worst episode - consider this the Techmoan's Six Things of Christmas' equivalent of 'Spock's Brain'. However I'm particularly happy with tomorrow's episode, so don't unsubscribe just yet.

+Techmoan I thought it was hilarious - and the robots from Six Million Dollar Man used to creep me out, too even if they were in fact the best villains of that series.

8-Track was a mechanically troubled but fun format. It was the first successful car stereo format in the 60's-70's in the USA and it led the way for the Cassette, CD and Mp3 stereos we have now.

Just thought I'd mention that one of these Planetron's was used as a set piece on The Big Bang Theory. In Season 2, Episode 4 - The Griffin Equivalency, one can be seen on the shelf in Raj's office. Was just rewatching Big Bang and recognised it from this video, figured I'd let you know

We used to have the Spaceball set (device and two speakers) and I loved it, greatest looking device ever. Alas I think it suffered the fate that most devices did in my family, my mother didn't like it and tossed it out. Nice vid. Cheers

I saw one of these on Kijiji the other day and wasn't impressed by what I could see from the photos. Just now I saw you had a video on it and was happy to see my judgement was accurate. They wanted something like $100 (CAD) for it. I will give it one thing, though: it's unique-looking.

It's important to remember, as we travel on this nostalgic technological journey, that there have always been products that are absolute shit. Hence, this video is of equal import to the others in this series in order to provide a contrast.

Indeed. It's not (just) that "things were made better back then". It's (also) that the better-made products have survived in greater numbers than the low-quality products, so we see them more.

8 tracks are great. First 8 track i ever bought was a kiss tape. had the problem where the tape is reversed so its only playing the graphite backside. played it on a portable i had and it sounded so terrible. thought my parents were right in saying they sounded horrible when reminiscing. months later got more and found out the sound quality was actually quite good with a decent player in my hifi setup. Just today bought an 8 track and once again had the problem with the reversed tape. lol Great videos! cheers!

I think this looks awesome bro. I have a I guess 70s or early 80s yorx 8 track cassette recorder am/fm boombox. Pretty nice machine in my opinion. But could be better though because it's a bit touchy when it comes to playing sounds though the 8 track player. Got to get it just right to here it. And it did eat a tape one unfortunately.

I wouldn't cry over having to settle for this over the weltron. In all likelihood both were the same internally and sounded just as crummy. As for tapes being eaten, sounds like some good cleaning is in order. Or it can just go on a shelf and give you fembot nightmares. Oddly as much as I loved Six million dollar man, I don't remember that episode. Maybe the bigfoot episode with the aliens wiped all the other memories of the show out. I know if I tried to watch it in reruns i would probably think it was seriously stupid.

What was it about 80s Fords that they had those crazy issues with the tail lights? I followed an Escort once, and every time it indicated left, the left indicator stayed a solid amber, every other light on the left cluster went off and every light on the right hand cluster flashed! Very disconcerting for those following behind.
