Planer Board Trolling Live Bait for Clarks Hill Hybrid Stripers! Tips, Tricks and Info at the end!

Welp as luck would have it my low pressure fuel pump failed around mid morning so our quest for a GIANT Striper turned into a quest to salvage the trip by catching something with some stripes on it lol. Hybrids saved the day as we rolled with the punches and changed up our approach. We finished up having a pretty good afternoon boating well over a dozen hybrids in 2.5hrs time! Thank the DNR for those feisty little critters 🙏🙂
I included some helpful info and tactics I use at the end of the video. If you're just starting out striper fishing this info may be of help to you and maybe even if your an old salt you might be something useful to grab from it as well.

Hum, live bait is ok but you can always use Bucktail and spoons which work pretty good.

Should I hook herring through the top of mouth or across the nose? Thanks

Do you use short shank #4 hooks for blue herring. I went to buy some and they looked small. Also, where do you hook the herring? Thanks

I bet it's not your fuel pump but instead you got crap water fuel from the typical cheap lake gas store. It's super common issue around Clark Hills. Mater of fact I usually tow in at least 1 or 2 boats every week. They all have said they filled up at the 1 white gas station right beside Points West. I highly recommend never going there, gas is garbage and baits are damaged before buying (missing scales and looking weak.

It was a cracked Reed in the secondary fuel pump.

You aint kidding 😆 I didn't realize how close it was until I seen it on video while editing 😳 If that would have been even a decent sized striper that rod would have been long gone for sure!

Great video. I really like the information at the end as I’m still learning this hole trolling thing. If you don’t mind me asking, and maybe I just missed it, but at what speed to you troll for stripers? And if I got this correct, you strictly used split shots for weight not egg or trolling sinkers? Thanks again for the help.

With herring and shiners i usually troll between .8 and 1mph but occasionally I'll drop down to .6 even as low as .4 if the water temps are frigid and the stripers are slowed down because of it in late January and early February

I prefer the splitshots cause I can add them or take them off on the fly without having to re-tie. I can run 2 lines with one splitshot, 2 lines with two splitshots, and 2 lines without any splitshots, now say I catch 3 in a row 30 minutes time on the unweighted lines I can reel the others up and pop those splitshots off and immediately have those lines right back in the water without any delay 🙂

I use size #1 gamakatsu Octopus hooks. 90% of the time I hook the herring through the upper jaw just in front of the eyes. If you go too far back into the skull you’ll kill the herring by stabbing the brain, to far forward and you’ll hook the herring in the paper thin membrane and the bait will wriggle off the hook.
