Plan Escape Prior to Leaving Jehovahs Witnesses

#exjwsthink #exjwinterview #exjw #jehovahswitnesswomen #jehovah #jehovahswitness
In this podcast, Lady Cee interviews Pat, an ex-Jehovah’s Witness that left the organization in 1995. Pat realizes there are many things that she did wrong prior to leaving. In this podcast, she shares a wealth of knowledge that can help others to avoid the pitfalls she endured during her own departure from the organization.
Exit Strategy Tips for those individuals that are Physically In Mentally Out (PIMOs)
Friends - Start making non-JW friends, contact non-JW relatives if need be create a secondary account on social media and e-Mail
Mental Health - Find a therapist that specializes in cults. Join
Ex-JW Facebook groups and Ex-JW Meet-ups in your city
Set Goals - Create a bucket list of stuff you couldn’t do as a JW but are free to do now and get them done
Productive Use of Time - Use the time you spent at Kingdom Hall or preaching doing something productive such as college, a second job, a hobby, exercise, etc.
Emergency Planning - Have a Plan A and Plan B for various emergencies including medical, housing, employment, food, etc. Who could you contact in an emergency if your family is shunning you?
Figure out whatever gives you a sense of purpose and meaning in life and do those things - volunteer, activism, advocate, child sponsorship

Great video!!!. I wrote my disassociation letter in January. I been around this organization for 8yrs but baptized for 2yrs. When my wife left me the only encouragement i received was to stay busy in field service. I was miserable. I never received a shepherding call from any elders for any encouragement. My feelings started to change about this organization. I question the elders about the founder of the Watchtower. A elder told me people are not perfect and Jehovah is refining the organization. I did research and I could hardly believe what I found. Now I know why the society don't want any Witnesses to search the internet. I was told by my wife who faded away that I was crazy for leaving Jehovah. This organization really teaches you to be judgemental and will leave you confused about religion. Fortunate, I don't have any close relative in this organization. I put much thought into my disassociation. It was difficult at first. After I shed a couple of tears I was ok. This organization is most definitely a cult. J.T. and Lady C along with Raymond Franz gave me more encouragement to leave this cult. I felt lost when I walked in a christian book store. I begin to shed tears. I like gospel music so I bought me a Fred Hammond c.d. and got my praise on

Everette Ray I went through pretty much the same thing you went through. I go to a Pentecostal church now and they reached out to me way more than the witnesses did when I was missing from church services. Not only did the pastor and his wife offer me assistance but the members did too.

In 30 years I received one shepherding call. when they don't want to do something ,they will tell you that no ones perfect or wait on Jehovah. some of them are mean spirited. I have seen members go crazy at the hall. they don't care what happens to you as long as you sell books .it destroys the mind, they want all your time . I made one friend in 30 years .its lonely and self defeating to be with them all the time. I hurt myself in many ways dealing with them. they are also selfish and greedy .members are killing themselves right and left but they don't care .brothers throw themselves out of windows at bethel, so sad.

Enjoyed Pat's vibrant and exuberant spirit and attitude. And excellent navigational advice for direction! I'm a PIMO not going to meetings hardly any more since the May 2017 convention because it's conscientiously dishonest, morally dishonest, informationally dishonest and intellectually dishonest after learning of the pervasive child sex abuse problem in JW, the UN affiliation, stocks owned by watchtower in war manufacturer companies, a TV purveyor of softcore porn & violence and a well-known cigarette company, Rutherford's Beth Sarim & Beth Shan, and the blood and DF'ing/shunning policy flip-flops among other issues. It just makes little sense to go and becomes a waste of time because of the "hidden" yet blatant duplicity. So as someone comparably brand new to all of this, waking up in May 2017, getting busy doing the things Pat mentioned to occupy our minds like exercising more, setting new goals, and not to become overly obsessed with the past as she mentioned about the feelings of anger, betrayal and time lost and wasted. Pat sounds like someone any of us could sit down with for hours of relaxing, decompressed conversation and wonderful, intelligent discussion. I'm so sorry to hear Pat's and other ex-JW family shun simply just for changing beliefs and expressing a change in beliefs verbally or on a sheet of paper. More and more I see the narrative that the organization paints of "apostates" is way off kilter with fallacious claims they're leading an immoral life, on drugs, drunk, leading lives of dependency is some kind of destructive way. That's 180 degrees polar opposite of reality as Pat, Lady Cee, JT and so many others walking the walk by lifestyle demonstration. It is doable to move forward being unobsessive about what's lost and not to be embittered. Great interview! Best, Dave in Wisconsin

A another excellent video. Excellent points. I can relate to her. I left the wrong way the first time. I was not raised a witness. I left angry and joined the army. I now am in the process of healing. I left in 1995 felt guilty and got restated in 2013. I did not get the proper help after leaving. I left last year for good this time. Your videos are a big help for me. I also really enjoyed the videos made by Daniel I was so happy when I saw him on your video. Thanks for becoming my friend on Facebook. I now have made friends with you and your husband. I now am reading the Crisis of a Conscience. I found a audio version on KZread that I am listening to. I think it's wrong to shunn anyone.

We receive so many emails and comments on our KZread channel about how our videos are helping. Wish we had KZread prior to our departure. It was really a rough time for us. But, we had each other and it made it all the more better. I don't know what it would be like being ALL alone and still believing this is the truth. The Internet is definitely the best thing that ever happened to exjw's and the WORST thing that happened to Watchtower. Payback is a real you know what, right? LOL

Hello Diana - Thank you for your comment. Your experience is another reason why I did this video: Watchtower wants ex-members to feel some type of negative emotion whether it's guilt, isolation/lonely, fear, etc. After a while it can become overwhelming. Sometimes if they don't get proper assistance, ex-members will go back to the cult, join another even worse cult, be depressed, commit suicide, etc. This is why I highly recommend therapy with a therapist who specializes in cults and connecting with other ex-members, etc.

Well done Pat on your journey. Amazon was an amazing tool of another Christian I was debating alongside on a bible debate forum. I mentioned a book called Making Your Family Life Happy (1978) that was used on me by my husband and I referred to the page number when speaking to a current JW who didn't believe it was from Watchtower and I must be lying. This other person put a link in to the book on Amazon where you could view it and people could see the subsection I was talking about. The only way Watchtower can cover their tracks is by buying up all their old publications and destroying them. That could add to all the costs they already have with all these lawsuits going on for covering up paedophilia.

If you NEED to talk to someone. If you have a personal physician, ask him or her if you can see someone and explain why you NEED to talk to a professional. If you can't afford that, there are PASSELS of Ex JW communities all over the place now. Here, on facebook, Twitter, etc... I've never been a JW. I've been trying to share the REAL Jesus with them and I NEVER imagined it would be as hard as it turned out to be. The conditioning goes DEEP and only another ex JW would understand the extent of all you've been through. Or, if possible, a therapist. Best case scenario...both.

Hi Luke - With therapy be careful to choose a therapist that specializes in cults if possible. There are therapists who don't consider JWs a cult (they seem so nice and pleasant to outsiders). It helped to have a professional answer my questions - Why are people drawn to cults was a big one for me. I guess I needed confirmation that I wasn't a complete dummy for staying long when I knew I was miserable.

Matilda I found people to be very warm and inviting. Always blew off coworkers. I work at an airline. People would say hey...a bunch of us are going to a game out of town or pooling our money together....going to China or somewhere you may never know you'd get a chance to visit again. And I always told them no. I have meetings. I have to go to an assembly/convention. I turned down chances to really make good friends. But the ironic thing is you didn't always get invites like this from people at the hall. I gave so many tickets to brothers I knew to come and go from Bethel. Never asked for a time. Took a brother and his family to Hawaii. They invited a group of friends to their house to see all the slides and pictures of our trips. To this day I've never seen any of that. My mom was a single mom. No one really got to know her or tried. But we were the poster children for the single sister with a son who was just....a publisher.

Definitely make friends. The 1st year or two after I left I was bored as hell. Work and home. Work and home. I never wanted to go back because I enjoyed NOT having rush home after work and rush to a meeting. I didn't plan to leave. I just got lucky moving to a foreign language hall and fading. . None of the elders every spoke with me or cared who I was. So when I stopped going all together.... I never heard from anyone until this day. In the English speaking hall they would have been checking on me non stop. In the Spanish hall....it was so large unless you were super spiritual I don't think the brothers cared about the others. Very few people made attempts to find out who I was, though at the time my Spanish was pretty good. I certainly didn't feel much love at the last two halls I was in. Some halls are so cold fading is easy in my opinion. Brothers/sisters can you see you every meeting and not say two words to you. Then see you at work and wonder what's wrong. Maaaaaaan. My coworkers talk to me more than people at the hall. And they could care less what I believe in. They don't set conditions on me. JW rationale.......we don't make you feel part of the hall.....but don't do anything with people outside the hall. As far as family..,same thing. My cousins and uncles...my mom always said...don't give them your number. Don't talk to them. And I havent. Only limited contact. So basically my family whom I was once close to....may as well be complete strangers. Attempting to talk to or contact would be weird. I mean lije a asking a complete stranger for a favor things shouldnt be like thst. Like you have no friends,no family because you've shut people out of your life due to teaching from the Governing body.

She is always wanting to know where I am going, when I am coming back home, etc. I work through the week and on weekends, it's household chores and sometimes I will ride out to a mall or to a movie and/or dinner. Since it's been cold and my state has a high rate of flu, I keep to myself and do a lot of reading and relaxing. I take time to call my non JW friends and feel good to talk to them.

Great Video Lady C...This is really timely information. When trying to leave the Watchtower it is best to be strategic about leaving, This video suggested strategies that someone newly leaving might not consider! Pat is a sister like me, we both enjoyed politics at a early age, but being a JW having a career in politics/activist/public servant was really out of the question. But of course that changed for me, as a ran for public office and now hold the title of Aldermen.

Interesting. Not EVERYONE willingly receives a person who once rejected them. My family, as small as it is (2 people) accepted me and one congratulated me and gave me a generous Christmas gift, something she hadnt even some before I joined the faith. We still don't communicate regularly, but I happily out her name as contact on my bank account in my mother'a former place. It has been empty for a couple of years. Also, poor and working class, uneducated folks might regard a religious dissenter as a "backslider." They probably think of Witnesses as DEEP Christians compared to many other faith traditions that permit fornication, gang membership, profanity, smoking, etc. They might think you've "gone bad" and now you need them. They lack the knowledge and insight of more open-minded folks. Most of my neighbors don't get the big deal about leaving WT, only 2 - an ex and one whose friend has been hinting at ending their 40 plus year friendship.

After I watched the video I saw these listings of other videos I might want to check out - all JW videos. All that time I'd been out, and was just now learning how much of sham this cult is.

I am an atheist now. I enrolled in college and took a Religious Studies class and saw an HBO documentary about why we worship. The college class proved that the account of Jesus Christ is not unique. There are plenty of religions that predated Christianity with a similar story of god rescuing mankind from certain death and then mankind being eternally obligated to serving the deity. It is a psychological manipulation intended to make the believer feel a sense of indebtedness. The HBO documentary which I saw in the early 2000's showed that all religions were created to help mankind cope with their mortality. If you notice - every religion has a belief about what happens after death (heaven, hell, purgatory, reincarnation, etc.). I'm cool with the idea that someday I will die and don't need a cult/religion to give me a psychological coping mechanism.

And about therapy. My therapist insulted me for not believing me, when I talked about the demons. I later found a very good and natural explanation why I saw demons all the time and it was called sleep paralysis. It is not even a disease, it is something that is so natural that it is happening to most humans every night, only that they are not awake during it. Why couldn't the therapist just say, hey, you had sleep paralysis.

For the crappy psychological and emotional way I was feeling after leaving the cult - I consulted a therapist that specializes in cults. There are therapists who don't consider JWs a cult (they look harmless enough). So when choosing a therapist, one must be selective. My suggestion when it comes to therapy is to talk to one whom you are comfortable talking with. Also therapy takes time - so don't think in two weeks all will be well. A person may have a mental disorder (bipolar, schizophrenia, PTSD, etc.) that has not yet been diagnosed and needs to be under the care of a psychiatrist and on medications. So if a therapist isn't helping - a visit to a psychiatrist may be needed just to rule out any mental disorders. I am an atheist now and don't believe in demons, Satan, etc. If I believe in unseen evil spirits, then logic says I would need to believe in angelic spirits as well. I believe Watchtower tries to instill in members a fear of evil spirits as a method of keeping people in the cult.

  • @stasacab

The Assyrians that had a huge influence in everything thought that life is hell. Therefore it could as well be that the entities we deal with are all evil. WT demonology was a big motivation for me to join in the first place. It should not be a surprise that while in the Watchtower, I still had troubles with demons. Instead of repeating Jehovah's name like a mantra the last time I told entity the current date and remark that I did not believe he belonged to this era. It worked. If the body is relaxed enough for you to say whatever you want to say, then ghosts cannot appear. Like in Stargate, when one loses fear, he or she will ascend.

Matilda - The key is awareness. Do you have moral convictions that you comprehend and see the wisdom of? I do. If so, find like-minded people, maybe among the ex community, but some DO leave to be morally untethered. Just be aware there are a few categories of dissenters: (1) Morality haters (2) doctrine defiers, (3) objectors to outright lies/mistakes, history , (4) protestors of arrogant policies of leadership, (abusing the brotherhood) and the (5) lifestyle haters: culture, boredom, control, etc. As former Witnesses, there are plenty of places and directions to go: Left, Right and Center. We are not a spiritual family in any way.

I think that you will feel a lot better and have a lot more in common with their belief system and yours. All you have to do make sure it is a good fit for you is to just sit with them and conjugate the finer points so that at the very least you, you will have a religion sponsorship in the event at Armageddon that your disbelief in the existence of the living God and the ransom provision through his Son, Christ Jesus, doesn't quite pan out.

Matilda The College and Student Loan system in the U.S. with FAFSA is crazy. They are asking more for parents and grandparents financials in order to "qualify" for student loans. Some of these parents and grandparents are on the hook and even get their wages and social security checks garnished because they are co-signers and that's a very serious problem if the student graduated or not in debt cannot obtain employment. A lot of individuals here in the United States HAVE to obtain some Student Loans to go to College/University. And the problem some have had as the recent global Great Recession revealed is if one comes out of school and cannot gain employment in the desired field or they were laid off/downsized and cannot get reemployed then that Student Loan Debt can be an overwhelming problem, even when deferments and forbearances are utilized as interest still accumulates. Plus, working in Bankruptcy law nearly 10 years myself and there were major law changes made in 2005 limiting the dischargability of Student Loan debt through Bankruptcy. So even in bonafide, legitimate hardship situations where severe problems in life financially have occured Student Loan Debt is rarely ever eliminated or canceled through the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. I've been there with my JW Ex-Wife as well. Not Fun! Best, Dave in Wisconsin, USA

Apt215 Melissa Brown, everyone can go to college or university. Citizens, permanent residents and overseas students. International students pay through the roof and the others only pay back their fees when their income reaches about 40,000 USD. Or you can pay up front as well as an option. But the students' education has nothing to do with their parents. What I mean is that no-one asks about your parents. Though there are some questions in the application process such as "were your parents working when you were a teenager" and " what was your first language" and some other statistical questions. The student is assessed and/or accepted academically not financially. So, if you can make the grade, you can study whatever you want.

Same here in the US, Matilda, anyone and everyone can go to college. For students age 18 -21, their parents' income is required on the college application but the application can be processed without that information as far as I know. There have been JW parents who've done the same thing (refuse to provide their financial information).

We got her cremated and sprinked her ashes to the sea, as she had wanted. At any rate, I was not prepared. My dad raised me with good intentions, he said that do not say anything if you cannot reason it. Therefore when I started strongly suspecting that I was queer, I did not come out of the closet or had any such plans, for my eventual disfellowshipping, because I could not logically reason my feelings. Others were not as hesitant, though, and the word got out and there I was in the judicial comedy.

I too have been going through that, and my bipolar condition added to me being extremely rigid and judgemental. Now, I recall JT saying that he dosen't go out and get wild just because he's not a Jehovah's Witness anymore. Does that mean that both of you don't have a religion anymore? The reason I'm asking is because I don't know if there's any religion being directed by Jehovah's Holy Spirit, other than Jehovah's Witnesses. Who over the years progress... Sincerely, Xavier A. Cervantes-Badillo

Xavier - I know this question is directed to JT and Lady Cee, but I just wanted to respond anyway. On the matter of religion, I am an atheist now. When I was in college I took a Religious Studies course called Religion and Psychology and that helped me realize religion is a sham. It was created to help mankind deal with their mortality.

Pat Warmack Thank you for the reply. It honestly makes sense that religions sells morality for profit and power. Either way there are reasons that make me believe in Jehovah. I can't ignore that there are supernatural evil creatures, so there must be something keeping them from right out terrorizing the entire inhabited earth. Plus, all creation has marvelous and uncoincidental details...

Leonardo Guerrero you have taken the most important step. You were willing to ask the Critical Thinking questions and accept the answer You have been willing to call a spade a spade At this point it's just a matter of making your exits There is NO LONGER any need to explain yourself to regional and local Watchtower Managers called elders and CO. JUST RELAX and take a deep breath Yes you are going to be upset because no one wants to be Duped fooled hoodwinked or bamboozled but we all were !! So now what do you do? You start to rebuild your life. you no longer have to hawk worthless books on your weekend. Since turning in time is a BOGUS JOKE-- enjoy it now -- now you can always be a 10 hour publisher and they will never call you If you want to catch that evening show on a meet g night - now you can. It was a sales training meeting anyway By now you should know how to offer wt and awake magazines - do you really feel you need more training on your evenings?? Can you not think of something better to do now on meeting nights ?? Those boring meetings can now start to come to end. Just start reducing them and when asked let them know you had PERSONAL matters to attend to and THANK THEM for their concern WITH A SMILE ON YIUR FACE !!! Why not volunteer to work at a soup kitchen or shelter.? You will see people who really appreciate that you have volunteered As a JW we used to tell folks on sat morning we were volunteering to be out knocking on their doors Yea right !!! Did you really feel like a volunteer ? Ask yourself. See a volunteer is not dogged for not volunteering enough - instead whatever they do is appreciated Their is no such concept as TOKEN VOLUNTEER SERVICE Yet JW are told they give token service - I thought it was volunteer ?? Take your time on leaving and keep your views to yourself - start building a new clientele of real friends who are not conditional If you wanted to go to college - register for the spring sessions - you are now able to live your life not for the wt but for yourself They lied to us - no need to keep on trying to work with THIER fifty cent program

OY! The whole social structure of the WT sounds like a "MEAN GIRLS" table in the school cafeteria. And heaven forbid if you're ONLY a PUBLISHER! Like the Senior High girls who wouldn't dare associate with Jr. High 'kids' . For school kids, such immaturity is understandable, but for an organization that's supposed to be about *Christian LOVE* , that snooty attitude shows that organization for what it is! A white washed tomb!

vernell green because you would then Never have the chance to know that God is not gong to kill you because you disagree with some American religious pamphlets out of NYC Take yourself for example - here you are on this forum because you have an interest in JW issues that are being discussed by former JW The FDS gb says JW should be content and not have any interest , concern or desire to know what former JW are saying and doing And yet dedicated baptized JW like yourself are here on these sites JW.org just doesn't cut it - boring articles , meetings, talks - instead here you actually get to use your mind to agree or disagree with what is being discussed At the hall you have to clap like you really enjoyed the boring talk You want to be here , you enjoy being here. If not you would have never clicked the link Be smart and think critically for once in your life.

With me, it's crazy for anyone to believe and be so scared of what people write regarding religion. They must fell for the trick! And to believe all that Bethel stuff? Of course I personally would laugh if anybody expected me to believe stuff in any religion I was raised in. As kids, after the age of 5, you start to get it that the catholic priest is hot air: a lot. What they say about "the truth", who knows what's the truth? Every church preaches what we need to do to get in heaven/hell. When we were 5-7 we knew that a lot of "church stuff" was BS. I can imagine people who get family deaths, illnesses, losing money due to the ecomony, going bankrupt might buy the story, and might walk in there. involved and having to believe all this stuff to be true in the first place makes me think how people can be so gullible. That's why I say, just leave. So what if they bother you, get a restraining order and enforce it. All religions have "rules" but to take this stuff so very seriously? No insults to anyone but how did they scare you into this stuff in the first place to need a plan to quit being a JW. We obviously have to protect ourselves if war hits, help keep our environment clean, and many JWs, really watch the news, discuss politics, spend time away from pioneers or whatever to do something like help with various causes. And the reality of what we face politically! I'm not going to sit around and die for the new world!!! I absolutely read pamphlets that I don't like, such as the children all being home schooled, (and I know some educated JWs handles all that money and investments, and graphic design, legal issues at Bethel, so they had an education! But they want everybody else to be dump school or say it's ok to go to school and learn a trade. I never met more than 20 JWs that were 9-5 professionals like me. The blood donor thing, hell no I'm asking a doctor to work around a blood machine if I'm dying. I was a catholic, and before I even knew a JW, I was sickened by Catholics show up sunday, the priest says blablabla . I dislikeJW attitude of "lets us just sit here and wait for the new world." I'm a dog lover, and I do a WHOLE LOT OF WORK FOR THE HUMANE SOCIETY. I've overheard som "ooohs and awwws" because time in service would be more valuable than saving dogs, because they are supposed to suffer because of Satan. I never recall being told god would kill me if I disagree with something. God gives the good plan of life, which is very lacking today in this world, the important parts of the bible about murder, greed, slaving for money, and all religions teach that, even Muslims. Even an atheist might be working too hard to climb that corporate ladder, and while mom is gone, her kid decides to shoot up a school. A hand full of idiots took 2 pages out the Kuran and ran with it. The Kuran is an excellent life style. Lots of my JW friends are very similar to me, so I guess they are technically "hypocrites." All that stuff about fire and chariots in revelation correlates to the seven cities! I guess the JW really picture a horse with wings? I never really knew that many people get scared of this stuff. I know a bunch of Catholics who ignore a lot of holy days of obligation, communion, but none of us feared for our lives. It just scares me more that so many people believe so deeply in that JW stuff. I think you HAVE TO LET YOUR OWN MIND be weak to get scared of all that stuff.

No, I'm not baptized JW, but Catholic. Personally, I don't think any religion dumping water on your head matters. I would never go door to door, and I'm on here because it's interesting. Believe me, I have noticed people who give up all their time to JW. And I find it crazy. I enjoy this discussion because it caught my eye, and yes, as far as the talks, I don't go, I've been to about 6 and it's just like sitting in Catholic Church (I'm Catholic). Catholic church was always a place to take a nap ... my granddaughters find Catholic Church boring too. I guess the people I know and the ones who DID TRY TO GET ME TO COME ALL THE TIME, made me interested. So I went. Also, I hear so many beliefs about what JW do, like drinking the blood of a dead animal, and I said no way, I'm in New Orleans and I only think that Voodoo might do things like that. I also read about that "shunning" crap even having to do it to family members!!!! INSANE. I do enjoy being here, as I said at the very beginning, "why don't you just quit going?" Note: I do think critically. That's why I can't understand that people buy the JW bullshit. I wonder who would believe the EXTREME doctrines! More people than I thought. I teach math. So I'm a great critical thinker, which variable brings me back to "just quit going" period. Brings me back to how anyone can fall for that doctrine; why is there this website for people to prepare for life after leaving JW ??? I feel sorry for all of the people needing help to get away from JW religion. Again, I don't see why you don't walk out, and join another church that's more "normal", or don't. If you believe in God, you don't need anything or anyone to pray. And, if you don't believe in God, that's another option.

I've heard stories where the congregation was so distant with a person that it was easy to just leave. In other cases, , esp. if there are family members in the org/cult, it's that much more difficult. I've heard that now, they are supposed to treat faded jw's as if they're df'd or disassociated. Ironically, it's the way they treat some people, there's precious little difference between before and after.

Muntu - I realize we disagree on this, but me writing a DA letter was done for my own benefit. It wasn't a control issue. I cut ties with them and considered it my new lease on life. Writing that letter was good in that I had no further contact with them. I didn't have to worry about anybody snitching on me, the elders trying to contact me, etc. As mentioned one of my siblings is an elder - so even had I ducked and dodged the elders from the KH - they just would've sent him over. Not only that but writing that letter gave me a sense of closure. It truly was a selfish act that I don't regret. We're no longer JWs - we need to allow other exJWs make their own decisions, whether we agree with it or not. We need to respect their decisions. We no longer need to tell everyone how to live, what to do, what not to do , etc. It's a JW trait that needs to be lost asap.
