In photo mode you can see Hugo up close. Kiddo is totally done for. He's unresponsive, really just using the last bit of his spiritual strength to make a path for the two of them through the rats. Little Hugo was a strong and compassionate boy. I have a young brother so I could relate with Amicia, but there is a time when you need to make a hard decision...although easier said than done. Lucas made the right choice.

Compassionate??? He killed hundreds of innocent people. Wiped out the starting city and then the entire island. You could argue the soldiers had it coming, but All those women and children? Had Amicia just listened to the Order and her mother at the start, all these lives would’ve been saved. Instead nope had to wipe out a third of Europe to finally realize yeah this little shit needs to die

The voice acting in these games - particularly Amicia’s - is always bone-chilling.

I just beat the game. Got the other ending. It was hard to face. I get that Hugo was a gantsa rat lord. What was left of him, after realising Amicia was alive. Was trying to prepare to do, what had to be done. Lucas was there as a plan B. The writers really kicked my feels in the balls.

I don't want Amecia hate Lucas, he did what he need to.

Me neither. It's not his fault. He did what Amicia couldn't do, and what Hugo wanted him to do. And as far as Amicia is concerned, Lucas and Sophia are the only family she has left now. So she's not alone. If the Lucas ending is canon, I hope she can forgive him. Or maybe they could use it as part of the plot for the 3rd game if it's not in present day.

I just completed my first play through of this game. I played Innocence when it first released, and I LOVED it, but I didn't get to Requiem until now. Innocence was such a good game. It had some VERY heart-wrenching moments (Rodric...) but by the finish, it was a mostly happy ending. But this... I was not ready for this. It did me in. I didn't think there was an alternate ending, but I damn nearly got it because I struggled so hard to do what needed to be done. After seeing this, I'm glad Amicia was the one to kill Hugo. He deserved to be put to rest by his beloved sister. I've never played a game that got to my emotions like Requiem. He was just a little boy who loved the world, and the people in it, so much. He didn't deserve this. But looking back at previous chapters, he knew it was coming. He knew what would become of him, no matter how hard the good people in his life tried. He knew he had to die...

Idk why but this scene is still breaking me from inside wven after like 4-5 months of playthrough😔😔

why was this ending more shocking than amecia kill ending

I just finished the game and ..I kinda expect this to happen but didn’t really think this will become true !! My jaw left hanging the whole time when I had to end Hugo’s life…like no…what are we doing in the first game then???? It’s just like another last of us , where all is really for nothing at the end. I felt bad for Amicia who went hell back and forth to save her brother but to only accept that …she can’t save him at the end.

Atleast in this game they didn't kill Hugo in the first f**king hour with a meaningless death. I always figured a game called "A Plague Tale" would be an anthology. So maybe if there is a 3 it will have adult Amecia, caring for a new Macula carrier along with their defender. and Amecia will see alot of Hugo in the new Carrier. And she will probably die with a smile on her face, sacrificing her life to protect the next Protector and Carrier, knowing she helped change the outcome and that she, Hugo, and their ancestors can all rest in peace because of it.

I think what's important is that Amicia tried. It may all be for nothing AT THE END, but she never gave up on her brother, until that very end. Yeah, that makes it worse, but hey, it's not like killing him was the first option.

Moral of the story: if theres game you want to play and you havent finished it yet dont look it up on the interent. The spoilers are almost unavoidable even if youre looking up for something as trivial as this. Amicia saw her father and mother being slaughtered in the same way and had to kill her only brother, even Lucas left her. What a very bad ending I think that Hugo's death is very enough for the whole game. it would have been a better ending if her mother was alive and they lived in this mountain house, and Lucas certainly wouldn't leave.

Exactly. They literally did everything they could think of and it wasn’t enough. There’s no miracle to fix this. If there is, I’d like to hear critics come up with something plausible to fix what Hugo had done and become. Some illnesses are like that. You try as hard as you can and it’s not enough and that’s okay. It hurts and it’s frustrating and infuriating, but that’s life. With Hugo it’s just got a supernatural twist to his illness.

Yea it was a better ending then the last one, it really made me feel amicia’s pain.

The ending floored me. I genuinely did not expect Hugo to die, especially since the first game had a pretty happy ending.

I got the ending where Lucas kills Hugo on my first playthrough because I litterly had a idea that there was a ending if u don't do anything and just waited because i couldn't kill him without feeling horrible so I just sat hoping there was a sercret ending and I was right

This game and Hugo didn't deserve this ending. In a total of more than 30 hours, including the first part, we try desperately to save Hugo, walk over dead bodies with him and offer him just 2 hours of complete peace, although this is exactly what would have given him and millions of people their lives. I understand that a happy ending is not always the solution, but it would have been appropriate here and now. I am really sad and deeply disappointed. However, the game is just great.

Why people are always disappointed when is not a happy ending? This is life. Not every situation has a solution, sometimes we lost something or someone. That’s what I love about plague tale. They show how it’s life, happy moments, sad moments, losses, new friends, old friends, betrayals, mistakes, etc. the sequel is game of the year to me

I feel like this is more realistic way to end the story. It’s her baby brother that’s she being asked to kill essentially the circumstances aside the amount of emotional willpower that would take is enormous and considering how much she loved Hugo it makes sense she can’t do it

This one pulled at the heart strings like Detroit Become Human. Both games i wasnt sure about when i started but became some of my faves. Cant wait for the next one!

I just finished this game It has a beautiful and emotional story and the player gets really involved in all the emotions and feelings of the characters, the soundtrack and the beautifully designed environment of the game will make you a memorable experience. All this aside, the ending was very impressive, throughout both versions we witness Amicia's relentless and all-out effort to protect her most valuable thing in the world, her innocent little brother Hugo, her fire of rage burns anyone who has the slightest intention of harming Hugo. But through the journey this rage and efforts even make her exusted, tired of all these adventures she is searching for a bit of peace and a quiet life with his brother by the last of her strength. She wants to take Hugo and run away to a far away place, but the creators of the game, by bringing the story to this point where it is Amicia herself who finally ends Hugo's life, involved the players' souls in this emotional and touching ending. Personally, when I wanted to say goodbye to Hugo and use Amicia's weapon for the last time, I regretted it several times and I couldn't let go of the stone that was pointing towards Hugo. I was in a really bad mood the next morning when I remembered what happened at the end. One of the most tragedic endings I've ever experienced yet memorable. This game is definitely worth trying and will engage your thoughts and feelings for a while.

In the first hour i wanted to do this, now at 11th chapter, searched this on youtube, was glad reading the title, but seeing the video, I am feeling bad, that scene, and cry from Amicia, but there should be choice to do it earlier, countless people could have been saved

I can’t help but wonder if this ending is worse. Here, Amicia failed to protect her brother, and when talking with Sophia a year later, can’t forgive Lucas for what he did. In the end, she has nothing.

A truly bad ending would have been where Amicia knows deep down that she must kill Hugo but can't bring herself to do it. Lucas then takes the crossbow to kill Hugo and stay the plague, but just before the arrow is released, Amicia kills Lucas with her sling. By this selfish act, the world is overrun with rats and humanity perishes.

Nah, we won’t. The cities and families destroyed says no one besides two people, one just as monstrous, will miss him. Even he had to have known that.

Kinda expected the ending, but damn..it's hard to swallow nonetheless. I mean, I'm hoping for the sibling to get a better ending. Maybe at least, when the codex is completed, you get a good ending due to the bond that the sibling shared, but noooo... gotta put the depressing ending only.. As if the reality isn't depressive enough. However, this game will be one of my favorites. Done ranting, time to find a couple of happy pets videos to ease the 'feel'.

In the next chapter there is a little dialogue difference if amicia kills him they talk about Lukas a little bit better but if Lukas kills hugo it shows clearly that amicia didn't forgive him for what he did Wich I didn't expect they do

I am really glad that I only watched the trailer of this game and not any spoilers cuz I wanted to find out everything by myself... Man I just finished it and have gone through a mental breakdown becuz of the ending. Watching the modern day teaser at the end, I am really down bad for part 3 of this game😢

This ending totally broke my heart

I believe Hugo is still alive ,might be in dormant state but alive. As macula don't feed on its host directly, he creates vision and forces host to rage by making them over emotional and then take over them. Which happened here as well. Now when macula has taken over hugo and feeding over his emotions successfully, how can macula allow amecia or lucas to kill him(macula's food hugo) . Otherwise macula would to have start all over again, finding new host , making its host weaker by showing uncomfortable visions etc etc. And the title of the game is A Plague Tale i.e story of a plague and its impact on people and humanity as whole. And if hugo dies-macula dies. And the title won't justify itself in next part. Winning over macula means end of story, which seems highly unlikely to happen, as a business if any product of mine is working well in market, why would i make unnecessary change to it??

Requiem was one of the best games I have ever played and it though us sometimes the good guys don't win, no matter how hard you fight. I really liked the score and story, it was a big change from Innocence to Requiem, I cried for Hugo he was such a sweet child and Amicia we forget she was only 15 or 16, she went through severe trauma and loss, it gives us another perspective too because we usually play adult characters who are equipped with the skill and can take enemies head on instead of heavily depending on hpw to stay stealthy, it was a good lesson 😂 I was always dieing but then progressively became better. I played Innocence and right away acquired the next one, I couldn't stop playing.

Why i played this game why i am knowing this game just whyy they could've just end it in 1 season if they want him dead i cried alot it"s video game but i just can't it's so sad i thought he will be able to control the rats more to the level thefe will be not any if them or just live far in peace idk i just can't i loved this game and when they didn't show us when the rock hit him i thought maybe he is alive cus of that but no😭i was also hoping to see what happened after that not just after 1 year😭

Lame ending. A truly bad ending would have been to have Amicia kill Lucas as he was about to send the arrow into Hugo's heart. We then would see the rat plague encompass the earth and the last scene we would see the rats feeding on Amicia's corpse.

I burned through all those hours for that? The ending was a real anticlimax. I can't believe they let LUCAS live!! Why does he have to survive 😂 it would have been less painful if he died as well, and Sophia too, they all should have died and let Amicia live lol

Ending was good. Don't know why some criticize it for its brutality. That's your fault if you can't handle a dark tale. The game is literally called requiem, so anybody expecting a turn around is illiterate. The game is half adventure and half horror/mystery. The game's real villain has always been the prima macula since the start of Innocence, not the count or countess. The story goes to great lengths at establishing the prima macula as a lovecraftian embodiment of doom and the end of all things itself. Therefore, it's only natural that the main characters really can't do shit to completely stop it. However, the game in its final sections excels at giving agency to Hugo to display his love, humanity and bravery in the face of unfathomable despair. And that is poetic and beautiful. In photo mode, during the last threshold, if you zoom in on Hugo's face you can see he is gone and there's no bringing him back. Yet he uses the last of his strength and willpower of a loving person to make the path clear for Amicia and Lucas to do what they have to do. And for sure, he knew what needed to be done. He gave his life to protect the Earth. The prima macula is such a great writing tool to use in these games as well. You can tell the creators loved writing about the curse as much as loved writing about the characters who had to navigate this curse. I feel letting Hugo walk away from it, his destiny even, would have actually undermined the effort the creators spent writing the prima macula to be this great, unknowable evil the worst of which the world has ever seen.

Is it a hive mind? How does it work? Why do cure potions cause it to react? Does it have a mind since it can trick Hugo? Is it evil or primal? What is the main goal of it if it can communicate in any way? None of these questions have any answers. You literally just said being as vague as possible is a great writing tool. That’s the opposite of great writing. And the devs love writing it? Bro, if there was any time to show what the macula is, it was right here, since it had reached a fever pitch. But no, they didn’t. They literally killed Hugo to avoid talking about the macula. Killing Hugo was the easy way out, and made the entirety of these two games pointless. While a pointless journey is the least of what these two deserve, players should not have their time wasted for “being as edgy and sad as possible.” Look, I have a lot of it nowadays but how much free time do you think I have? In short, this is a lot of cope to shift the blame for people that rightfully do not like this ending. And I just did it to you, which you had coming, considering what you did. If it’s the real villain, it’s a very poor one.

@Moon Moon Those questions are either answered and/or don't matter in the grand scheme of things. What is the macula? The games answer this. Though, why you need a cut and dry explanation would ruin the mystery of it. What is the evil of the Stanley hotel? Who is It and why does It only exist in the one town? Your question is dumb and there's a reason authors don't need to explain away all their reasons for choosing a villain. I'll bite a little, though. In Innocence, Lucas and Beatrice both talk about the macula being neither a force of good nor evil, that it is a gift given to the user at a young age. The Roman murals we see of it imply that some was known of it even before Basilius's awakening, therefore it is a force of nature very ancient. "Is it a hive mind?" It's clearly not. Nobody but the Macula can sense its will, and the protector to a far lesser extent. It's not a hive mind for the rats either because many times in both innocence and requiem the rats don't care about even the macula's well being until Hugo loses emotional control due to extreme emotional duress, thus allowing the macula's will to speak through him and influence his actions. The Macula seems much more like a leader to rats and able to influence them than it does an omnipotent force above them, which I think is why the last chapter is called "King Hugo" and not "God Hugo". "How does it work?" While a curious question, it's not that important as the games already explain the jist of it enough to get the story fully rolling. How does any veiled Lovecraftian force of nature work? The macula doesn't seem to have any definitive will. By no means does that mean it's bad writing. The story tell us that in both Basilius and Hugo, they were both, by the Order and the people around them in general, not allowed enough time, patience and peace for the macula to merge with them before causing harm. It's a sad fate that the world is so scared of the macula and wants to lock it away, which is what leads to its nasty destructive powers to begin with because the user goes mad. "Why do cure potions cause it to react?" They don't, though. It's the emotional instability and weakening of strong willpower that causes the thresholds. The game already showed that when Hugo was being tested by the order's alchemist that it was Hugo's fear and distance from Amicia, his protector that caused another Guyene in the red city. "Does it have a mind since it can trick Hugo?" You kind of just answered your own question. If it can trick him, then it has a mind. However, it's not about tricking any of the users. The story is not portraying the macula as some force that cannot be reasoned with. In both cases of Hugo's and Basilius's awakening, they were both coming to communicate more and more with the macula, merging with. It is an ancient force of nature, however, and not to be trifled with or taken for granted. If the user lapses in strong will and lets his emotions get the better of themselves, the macula grows out of control. So, it's definitely not that the macula must absolutely deceive the host at all costs. The macula is a nasty reckoning, but only in the wrong hands and only if the circumstances prevent the user from basically living a monk like lifestyle. "Is it evil or primal?" This question lacks a point. Is it ancient? Yes, as I've shown. Is it evil? Insofar as all we've seen the macula do is destroy the world around the protagonist and its previous user. But evil is human construct, and since Beatrice and Lucas refer to it as a "gift" and "neither good nor evil", I say it's not inherently evil at all. Hugo's last threshold was a testament to how much the macula is truly capable of. Shared visions, created visions, created reoccurring events of the past, down to T, manipulation of space and time, and the "breakdown of natural laws" as it was stated in the game. And that was just the tip of what Hugo may have been capable of if he had conquered that line with the macula vs. his own will to live. "What is the main goal and can it communicate in any way?" The answers I've given you paint the picture. It's up to you if want to continue to think what you think. Yes, it communicates. Innocence showed this 3 years ago. Does it have a goal? Because it's neither a force of good or evil it cannot have a goal. It's a type of alien (as in very unknowable), ancient force that is dependent on the host. When Basilius lost himself and succumb to his grief and anger, one can't even say that the macula "got what it wanted". It just did what it did. Nothing was seemingly gained as an opportunity for it. It brought destruction for a time, but then times calmed down once more and people live in peace again.

HAHAHAHAHAH I didn't know there was such a secret ending, I'm glad I killed Hugo myself, I actually wanted to kill him in innocence 😢 all the characters I liked died, I can't believe they killed her father, Arnaud and Rodric... And we're left with Lucas!!! Why 😭

I'm kind of surprised Amicia didn't beat the shit out of Lucas after he killed Hugo. I mean, she's killed people for way, way, WAY less. Even if Hugo HAD to die, I feel as if she still would have done it.

Why would she beat Lucas though? She knew it was necessary but couldn't bring herself to do it, so Lucas did it for her. She would have at least understood that Lucas did what had to be done

Well from what we know of Amicia, she is a physically strong knucklehead whose plans always fail. So she couldn't kill a little brother who she loves obviously BUT we don't see Lucas at the end and we only have Amicia's word that he's gone off to study alchemy...I mean...who knows😏

I was searching for "plague tale innocence" just to avoid this. Didn't help. Thanks for the massive spoiler, well done not thinking about other people 👍
