PixInsight: Flats (from Adam Block's Office Hours)

Here is an issue that a gentleman had with his flat field images not working. I demonstrate a few things to look for in order to diagnose the problem.

Thank you for putting so much time and effort into providing these videos, sharing your knowledge and teaching others to use the PI program effectively. That pixel math is a powerful tool in the PI collection of processes.

@@AdamBlock I will check out the offers of your sight and the tutorials you have listed on advanced techniques in PixInsight (In the future). I have a long way to go before I get any good data. (1) Cloudy for 98 % of the last four months here-- slowed way down the progress of my auto guiding development. (2) I have been spread so thin with my own involvement in this enormous project I started over five years ago: building my own telescope mount with slewing and auto guiding. I know all about the ASCOM availability, but I couldn't wrap my head around writing a driver to satisfy the needs of ASCOM requirements. So, I ventured on my own to write C++ in Arduino, and Python to create a serial com system of guide star drift on a sub pixel level, then to arc sec level. Perhaps, a bit like yourself, I like to think through a problem to resolve it. However, it is nice to get a little help sometimes. So many others in this field of interest (are out there... no pun intended) but they are far ahead of me, as I have been too busy in all else to learn post processing.

I think this is one of your more brilliant videos. I love the way you simplify things, especially things that should have been obvious but aren’t, mostly because we tend to overthink things sometimes.

Thanks for this Adam, it has helped so much in understanding flats and also how to easily verify if the optical train has changed with dust and disease!! As a newb, these basic quickies help pull everything together.

Thanks Adam. Very informative. I have had issues with flats from time to time which is not surprising since I do something sacrilegious (use flats from different nights). I especially like your method for checking the master flat. Cheers

that was very useful... cant wait to test it on my subs before doing a calibration of 600 subs of a target. great video ..

Thank you so much for this video! I've been fighting with WBPP as for some reason it didn't want to use my light frames. This fixed it though!

"...seemingly a diseased looking mess, here" - too soon, Adam :-) Very informative video - would love to know, given this situation, how to salvage things.

Best answer... take new flats! Unfortunately this could mean the data in hand is simply not salvageable if the artifacts are too numerous.

Hi Adam! That was a good video. Of course I've had this happen, mostly because I neglected to do the flats right after imaging. When that happens, I have done circular masks (using the GAME script) and then seeing what the difference is between the luminance values are and then using pixelmath to just add or subtract an appropriate value to the target pixels. That seems to fix them for the most part. Is there a better way?
