An example of using Pixinsight's DBE Creatively

Here is a video from PixInsight Fundamentals on Dynamic Background Extraction. Typically users will throw as many samples as possible on an image and attempt to flatten the field. However, with an approach as shown below, you can reproducibly model your backgrounds with DBE with fewer samples and more quickly. This video is from the "Workflow" example.

Adam, I am not sure how many times this happened to me. I always thought issue is with my flats. This is perfect tutorial that gives me another tool. Thanks so much!

Your video has given me a useful set of approaches to using DBE... I am learning much from your video. Thank you for posting... I am very new at PixInsight. What are the hotkeys you are using to redisplay the image? When I use the tool bar screen transfer function it is too much enhancement.

  • @AdamBlock

You should just move the sliders of the ScreenTransferFunction process to adjust as you wish. There is nothing special about the autoSTF other than it is mathematically computed by the values in your image (the histogram).

Time for the thick question, would you use the same settings then for RGB I mean the process icons now,

Incredible video and explanation Adam. Can I ask, is this process only needed if flats have not been taken and applied. I only ask, as it seems that there is a doughnut near the centre bottom of the image that was not removed with flats. Loving the videos sir!

  • @AdamBlock

Yeah..that doughnut was an error in every flat. So flats had been applied...but still some errors remain. In my instructional video, I show how to deal with this as well. DBE will not take care of this. But DBE should be used on properly flat fielded images.

You did not take care of the donuts :-) Any ideas on them ? Otherwise excellent video with new stuff I did not know ... Thank you !

Yes... I have a section on one way to do it (there are many methods): www.adamblockstudios.com/articles/Horizons_Dust_donut In another lesson I use selective rejection a method- if you have many images but only a subset have donuts- you can reject them mathematically.
