Pittsburgh Modular Taiga: Experiments in Waveshaping & Chaos

Музыка

In this video I share some recent patch experiments using Taiga, the new semi-modular synthesizer from Pittsburgh Modular. I’ll go over what Taiga is, share a brief tour of the instrument, and jump into a bunch of demos of patches & sounds from my recent explorations.
While Taiga is great at classic synth leads, bass lines, sequences, & paraphonic chords, it also excels at creating very dense, noisy textures & sound worlds. The patches I share in this video are focused on slightly more experimental and chaotic sounds that feature waveshaping, feedback, and chaos.

I think I've watched every video out there about this synth, but this is the one that finally made me buy it. This is such a great deep-dive exploration and explanation of what it's all about, and the whole video is great, but my favorite parts by far were when you showed how far you can push it into really wild and unruly experimental territory

Fantastic video. Close to buying a Taiga after a modular set-up rethink. Ousting a few modules, and probably my Kilpatrick Phenol, In favor of the semi-modular Taiga. I'll keep the modules that will compliment and add to what the Taiga has. I'll be able to get sounds right off the bat without necessarily having to patch. But have the flexibility to patch to take things further. I think this set-up will give me a little more immediacy and better focus. My modular journey has been a bit all over the place so far. I've bought modules largely on impulse. I've grown beyond the Phenol a little and patching the bread & butter stuff has become a bit tedious. Time to change things up a bit ;-)

You mentioned that most synths that you’ve used that have a wave folder only have one. Hydrasynth’s ASM-PWM is basically a wave folder. So if you think of it that way you have 4 available across 2 oscillators. Though it doesn’t sound quite as juicy as this analog goodness does.

Hmm, wasn't taken by the Taiga, until this video. But it sounds really unique here. Similar to your Hydrasynth videos, where you really showed what makes it special. Complex sounds by leaning on their strengths: folding, FM, shaping. I'm thinking that Empress Zoia Euroburo could be a great partner / expander for these (even more so for a Moog Grandmother). Because it gives you all that powerful stereo digital processing chain after. But can also add extra modulation, random sources, or even digital oscillators / sub-osc.

Great video - cool sounds! Just a note - Taiga is a native (also used in Russian) word for a type of forest in Siberia/Central Asia. It has nothing to do with tigers and is pronounced Tai-gah (with the stress on the final "a") I'm a native speaker, and have grown up in those regions. I'm surpriesd no one corrected the folks at Pittsburgh... All that aside - it's a very exciting synth and the sounds are fantastic!!

@@inthefade Yes, I’ve listen to all the other videos. We all know that that is about preferences. I do not think the nasal/tubular sound of the latest PM synths is the best for those “classic” sounds. I much prefer the more open/stringy sound of the Dreadbox synths for that. On the other hand, getting things sounding “experimental” with those boxes appears considerably harder than with this one. I love both makers, regardless.
