Sarah Belle Reid is a performer-composer who plays trumpet, modular synthesizer, and an ever-growing collection of handcrafted electronic instruments. Her unique musical voice explores the intersections between contemporary classical, experimental and interactive electronics, noise music, and improvisation. She has been recognized for her innovative work in expanding the "possibilities of the humble trumpet into new territory by the application of innovative sensing technology and sound processing” (Sequenza 21), including the development of her augmented trumpet, called MIGSI. Reid's debut album for trumpet and interactive electronics, "Underneath and Sonder," was released on pfMENTUM in October 2019.

Are you Jew?
This was absolutely mesmerizing to me as I did not know that an original Buchla system still existed and working! My love for electronic music and synthesizers came about with my dad bringing 2 LP's to the house: Dick Hyman's 'The Electric Eclectics of Dick Hyman' and Walter Carlos 'Switched On Bach' and, he build for me and my brother a PAIA kit synth back in the early 70's and my love for synths and electronic music has never stopped. Thank you for this wonderful video. Cheers
Thank you for all the very pedagogic, informative and well made videos!
Love your videos!!! What camera, stand and light pack do you use?
I didn't know about that method, but I once played around with my mixer and I happened to get a near-sine wave. I was shocked.
The meme thumbnail. Great sense of humour :D Awesome video!
Thanks for the video :) At 7m:3s whats that external analog control for VCV/computer called? how do I look for it?
It's a Korg Nanokontrol MIDI controller, it's great for working with VCV Rack
Very interesting video! This is an amazing machine. Is it possible to record via midi the knobs variations into a daw?
hi Sarah! Got a question for you regarding whats happen at 9m23. When you say sequencers mixed together.. how did you patched those same 2 sequencers?
Should run the delay back into the noon on different inputs
I loved the trumpet processing, is it a song already jaja?
How do you interface the mic?
I had a bunch of questions about how you can make acoustics work with modular. Probably searched for answers for about an hour and didn't find a thing. Then this video came up and answered all of my questions!☺ Thank you
Happy to hear that you found it helpful!
che casino!
this gated voice patch is beyond cool ! the amplitude from the mic controls sequencer speed and you're ringmodulating the voice with a vco controlled by the sequencer?
Saw one for sale in local CraigsList, and started doing some research. Your demonstration of how deep/abstract this synth can get, was a real eye/ear opener. Thanks very much for this deep dive, and all the other wonderful synth videos 🎶🎹🔥
The jam at the end sounds like if SUNN (0))) dropped a techno album.
9/10 Great video, very informative. I love your unique style, but video didn't have enough Cockney British man yelling at me.
Hi. Is there a standard or recommendation document showing speaker placements for 1st, 2nd or 3rd order Ambisonic? Are Dolby Atmos or Auro 3D-like speaker setups also sufficient for monitoring at least 2nd degree ambisonic sound? Thanks
I've heard wierd noises in this vid. Could you please let me hear music that you have made with those modules? Could you please explain how buying a modular synth would enable me to become a better musician or to make better music? Could you please explain why I should spend much more money for what remains basically a monophonic instrument without a keyboard and without patch memories, made from a bunch of pieces which do not form a coherent whole, than for a couple of powerful, flexible and consistent polysynths like e.g. a Hydrasynth or a Peak or a Prophet 5 or a Montage (you name it)? Could you please explain why I should painstakingly record my music one note at a time like W.Carlos did 60 years ago rather than playing the keyboard using my both hands? Thanks.
I love this workflow and find it super inspiring, personally! I find that patching with a modular synth forces me to think about building sound and interaction in new ways, and make different decisions than I would make with other instruments. But at the end of the day, it’s all about what inspires you to make the kind of music you want to make - if you want a keyboard, poly synth, patch memory etc., then I agree that something like a hydrasynth is an awesome choice!
Just picked one up! Thanks so much for the overview! 💪🏽
the korg sounds like a tamagotchi
This is by far my favorite description of features, and demonstration of creative patch ideas. After watching your video, I am much more likely to add the Spectravox to my Moog stack. Will make sure to use your affiliate link, when I do 🎶🔥
The second Strega patch sounds like alien chatter from District 9. Love it! Well done.
the wonky drum machine is fantastic!
Isn't it though??
Very nice introduction, but don't forget the DIY route too! It's cheap, you learn loads, and it's an immensely satisfying process. Building your own modules means you get to customise everything to your liking, and even turn your own module concepts into reality. Great video though, and this comment certainly isn't a complaint, just a mention of another great way of getting started with modular synths!
Totally!! The DIY route is awesome for those who want to build their own modules :)
Meh
That stuff looks CPU intensive sa mère.
It sounds like you’ve got a faulty one to me
Just bought one on the back of this- so kudos to you and thanks
impressive experiments. very expressive. but what is the goal of your studies?
its defo not as cool as mother or dfam
I felt like I was dropped on a planet of R2-D2s
When you say vocoder, i imagine Kraftwerk. I do not hear that kind of sound
This is great instrument. But, not for 700$. Maybe 200
hoho that shit is random af, i love it :D
why use cheap studio monitors for high end studio gear it makes no sense if you have the money to buy expensive synths why cheap out on studio monitors please explain ?
19:33 Expand upon this by using an 8 stage Analog Shift Register instead!
Seems to share some DNA with the Swarmatron?
Impressive work of art, moving and lots of special trumpet techniques 🎶🎺👌
Hi Sarah, this was a very well-explained and demonstrated video. Thank you!
Thanks! Happy you found it helpful!
Great video! Great synth!
What a killer synth!
24:32 Some gassy synth
the giggle afterward 💀
Excellent video. Easy to understand, straight to the point and lots of audio examples. Well done.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great concept and fantastic results
Thank you! This was a really fun experiment/exploration - would love to do more work like this in the future :)
Great run down Sarah, thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for such a detailed tutorial, well done. One suggestion, is if you widen your shot that shows the cable connections it would be so helpful. It's funny, I see this on a lot of tutorials, the image is cropped to exclude the cabling. Probably assumed that everybody knows the routing? Thanks again.
More modem sounds
Great demo ! Amazing patches at the end too 🙌🙌🎶
