Retired ff, and thought the same thing about the smell! The job involves an entire collection of aromas that are each distinct (distinked?) and can permeate uniforms, skin, hair, sinuses for an entire 24 hour shift, providing ample time to make you want to puke. Houses like this have a particular, unmistakeable smell, and seeing one brings the memory of that stench to life. It's thick, greasy, stagnant, and seems to cover every item in the house like invisible mud. If it had a color it would be a blend of very old scabs, oily brown/gray hair, gnarly toenails, and the wierd slime that rotten lettuce turns into. Did you know that humans can not forget a smell? They may not know where they smelled it before, but they will know they've smelled it before. I really wish this was not true.

Brother, As a former Zoning Inspector for a twp here in Ohio with currently about 1300 homes. I can back you up 100% on your experiences. I personally worked on 4 of these such cases that where labeled "Extreme" And they all had very similar problems. Three of the four of them where older females that flew the 🏳️🌈 flag. All liberal Democrat voters (See the multiple stickers on the multiple dead cars PARKED IN THE YARD. All three had multiple small animals (Dogs,Cats, Rabbits, Chickens) Most just running wild and breeding uncomfortably. And if you did the quick math, Take what you see outside the home. Multiple that by 12, And then multiple that number by 8 (The hight of the ceilings) that will get you pretty close to the amount of GARBAGE, TRASH, and JUNK that was inside of the home. We had one lady appox. 75 yr old that had a 2400 sq ft home that she literally couldn't get into any longer, And was sleeping in a U-Haul Rental Van that she was paying the monthly rate on to sleep in it in here DRIVEWAY. When Law Enforcement officers went to do a Welfare Check on her, She drew a firearm on them, And was subsequently shot. She survived the shooting. And thankfully was given a mental evaluation and was found to have a mental disorder. So the charges where dropped when she was committed to a State Mental Facility. However, No kids, No family that wanted to deal with the deplorable home that was condemned days after the shooting. We found multiple dead dogs and cats in a freezer in the basement (Yes still frozen) with Names, Birth and Death dates written on a card attached to each bag. The 4th was a older male in his late 70's that was convinced that he would be in the TV show "American Pickers" if he could gather and purchase enough old junk at auctions and from junk in ppls garbage. He also turned violent and had to be removed via Law Enforcement officers when he threatened zoning and Health Department officials with a firearm. The fact is, These individuals need to be placed in Institutions that we NO LONGER HAVE. Instead, Big Pharma just says "Put them on this "Head Med" And they'll be fine to live in a civilized society. WRONG....

As a former Zoning Inspector, I can tell you THEY DO... However here is what happens. We send the homeowner multiple letters (All certified mail) Or have a Civil Law Enforcement Officers deliver them to them. Then there's a waiting period that is usually 90 days to get the homeowner to address the issue (which often gets ignored) Then we call the County Prosecutor and get them to send at least 3 letters. Add in another 90-120 days. Then if things still are being ignored. The Prosecutor can file charges against them (and they often do). That usually makes the offenders show up to court. Then the crying and whinning starts to the Judge about "I need help to clean it up, And I don't have the $$$ to hire help or to get trash containers" So then the judge will typically give them from 3-6 months to get it cleaned up. And they tell them "You can not add any more to this,Do you understand??" And then NOTHING IS DONE in that amount of time, Except adding MORE JUNK TO THE EYE SOAR. So then the Prosecutor has to start issuing more letters and file more charges and get the homeowner back infront of the Judge AGAIN. Thats usually a good year or more later. And here comes the EXCUSES AGAING... This goes on, and on, and on... As a former Zoning Inspector I had 4 problem propertys in my community that I said "I'll take the job on and get them cleaned up, And then when I'm done, I'll give the job to the next guy who wants the extra $$$. It took me almost 5 yrs to deal with these 4 individuals (all at the same time) And the Twp had already had them to court at least once if not twice. These Judge's are going soft of HARDCORE CRIME today, What do you think they're doing with this nonsense??? I can tell you, Just kicking the can down the road and NOT holding these individuals responsible. Because I can also tell you about one we currently have that said "F-You, Its my yard ill fill it with as much garbage and trash and junk that I want. And im not cleaning anything up" We've had him in court over 15 times since 2018. And the daily fine is $750.00 and we have liens filed against all of his properties. He just gives us the finger as we continue to document the growing mountain of junk. And the courts say there's not much else we can do about it. He's almost 70 now, And his health is poor. Sooner or later we will own the property do to the lien amounts when he dies. But until then, Mount Crapmore Continues to grow...

This happened next door to me. The owner moved out in 2015 and left everything a mess. Then the squatters/thieves/dealers took over; one was her son and because of that, law enforcement couldn’t do anything about trespassing. Plus the owner had to report him for trespassing and she wouldn’t. They stole from neighbors and vandalized our places. In 2018, the city condemned the property. After years of back and forth and the dealing and stealing continuing, we got a new mayor and city manager, and they took action against all condemned properties, bad owners, and squatters. The city gave the owner notice that the property needed to be cleaned up and the home brought to code or face demolition. The owner went to court to fight it. I appeared, too, with documentation and police reports, fought and won. The city demolished the home and cleared the land of all the junk and placed a lien against the property. Where I live a few years ago a woman who had hoarded her house (a duplex), yard, and several cars (including a school bus) had an overloaded electrical outlet and the entire thing caught on fire. Her neighbor only made it out with her baby and cat (couldn’t even grab her purse/keys or anything else) bc it spread SO fast. The fire dept evacuated a 4 block radius bc the hoarder also had helium, oxygen and propane tanks in her hoard that she didn’t know if they were full and there was an enormous risk of explosion. I will never forget the smell and the smoke. This is a HUGE public safety risk; not only fire but also vermin. Google Del Ray Alexandria Virginia duplex fire and you will see articles, photos, etc on what happened here. The hoarder won’t voluntarily accept help. You have to force her.

The older single family homes like what most people are after are not what corporate/inventors are buying they actually end up losing money on those because of the cost of maintenance, yard care, taxes, insurance it is just not what they are after. The reason older single family homes have gone up in price is that there is a lot of demand for them by other people, young people looking to start a family, older people living longer these days are not selling so just lack of cheap older homes but it is not corporation or investors doing that.

My life and my neighbors’ lives are now peaceful.

Her coping skills or control of the situation was collecting "things" some random. some specific , like snowmen, Tupperware ,booksand sports bottles. I feel for this woman and will keep her in prayer. You never know what she is going through but it is a hell much worst than what the neighbors are feeling I promise. @Charlie-nd9ef And what right does that give a random citizen to control the actions of another citizen? The common sense is if it isnt actually hurting you then keep your nose out of other peoples business.
“So this is all your stuff that you’re reselling?” “Hopefully...” Pretty much sums up most hoarding situations.
The city's fire marshall can help. It's clearly a fire hazard to have entryways and exits blocked. Once that's deemed then someone should be able to take action with the city and with adult protective services. The elderly have to be housed in a safe, clean home. This is not.

A psychologist is also involved & so helpful when the person in need doesn't listen to family or neighbors. If rats have been seen there that is a health issue & the city is responsible. We had a similar issue with a neighbor years ago. Our city will warn them twice, then they dispatch a junk truck, dispose of everything that's not to code, and send the homeowner the bill. Code is simple: If it's obviously broken, unusable, not indicating any type of organization, and visible from the interior of a neighbor's home, the city WILL 100% act.
I do not know why this cannot be ruled to fire hazard. All the garages are blocked and the entrance door to the front is blocked. If the woman has a heart attack or some other problem, the ambulance people cannot get in.
