Pittsburg State University cops catch me; Kansas

I found this spot on the map that I thought could be a relaxing place to park for the day:
Dropped gorilla
Near Pittsburg, KS 66762
maps.app.goo.g...
But it turns out to be a part of the Pittsburg State University, patrolled by 2 gorilla campus cops on Sundays. What a surprise to learn this isn't a spot for the regular public gorillas. Consider my warning ⚠️ before attempting to park here or even visit the campus. The cops need to know who you are or you have to leave. its their property, although it wasn't too clear it was campus property. I saw one parking lot called the "Brown Lot" that required a "Pass" here:
Pittsburg Brown Lot
Pittsburg, KS 66762
maps.app.goo.g...
But there were no signs indicating a specialized parking zone for where I parked. did the sign fall down 🤔 ?
This reminds me of the problem I currently have with the Williston, North Dakota librarians:
Williston Community Library
1302 Davidson Dr, Williston, ND 58801
(701) 774-8805
maps.app.goo.g...
They don't post any fair warning signs for visitors to understand what is expected of them and end up with embarrassing situations. I felt insulted by this cop telling me I was in the wrong place, where if I had known that ahead of time, I would have avoided it. its not like I snuck in there to test whether I get caught or not. Property trolls are some of the worst people around. They are worse than homeless people.

These officers have no clue how to approach you. He was obviously scared, called for backup before contact, and unsure about his approach. They are basically just trying to push you out of the school, which they feel is their job, and maybe it is. It is interesting to me that these folks often suggest you should go to Walmart, a private business. It would seem that a public space is more appropriate for a visitor than than a private business. Does Walmart support this supposition by local police?

@@Exchange_IDs I got arrested - well a citation warning trespass - so "arrest lite" - with the cop wanting to call my landlady and call my boss to PROVE that I was not homeless. hahahaha. I was waiting for that question - "are you homeless?" - "It doesn't matter" - good answer. My cop was training in a young cop. I was taking a nap during spring break - but I forgot the stall I was in was also used by the homeless (that I also hang out with off campus nearby). Hilarious. I explained I was an alumni and I did directed research with the chair of the department down the hall - and we could go corroborate this. The cop obviously didn't want to do that either but during spring break no one was around anyway. It was like 50 degrees outside and I had to get back to work... I left MINNEAPOLIS soon after that since I realized the cops were out of control. That was 2009. I guess I called that one correctly.

I got the same "trespass citation warning for being homeless" - the cop wanted to call my landlady and my boss to prove to her that I was not homeless. Since I refused she put me in her squad car and she wrote out the citation for me to be barred from the University for one year. I told her I was an alumni with a master's degree and I was just taking a nap during spring break. hahaha. Then later it was declared unconstitutional for a trespass citation to apply to the WHOLE UNIVERSITY PROPERTY - it any property like that. It has to apply to the building only where it occurred. Kind of weird since this happened in a parking lot.

Because Travis was not legally obligated to provide his identification and thus did not, the cop judged him as uncooperative. The falicy in that argument is stark. Extending that argument a bit further, if the customer buying a new car makes an offer lower than the asking price, is the customer uncooperative? As a matter of constitutional law, no one is required to assist police with any investigation. Since the cop's Oath of Office commits him to defending the constitution, it seems that cops would welcome when people they are interacting with invoked their rights. Instead, the cops take offense and belittle the law abiding citizen.

@@charlessmith5436 I can tell what you wrote you never attended any institution of higher education. I'm no sports fan so I wouldn't know about gymnasiums. Although, I would think yes, you can go shoot hoops within reason. As long as you're not interfering with the team's and/or classes' scheduled activities. As an example, I went swimming one hot humid day in the indoor pool at Washington University, St. Louis, MO. while visiting then afterwards hung out with other students that were enrolled in courses there at the time. In closing, yes, pretty much anyone can freely go sit in on a class, lectures, use the library etc. That's what "public school" means. FYI, there's at least one other person on this page that left a post similar to mine. He'll be my unofficial witness if I need a defense. LOL As he wrote he sat in on a number of classes (uninvited) at a few different institutions before he made up his mind which university he'd liked best. I'm not alone, many of us want to get a feel of the school and how the staff preforms, their teaching abilities, the campus layout, frats, policies, cost, what functions the university holds, etc. FYI, we're not talking about elementary schools with young children. We're talking about adult/young adult institutions of higher education.

Right. In ND State v Mayland 2017, the justices actually said that if the property owner didn't people wandering onto the property, the owner needs to post "no trespassing" signs.

Not quite true. If he is campus police, he speaks on behalf of the campus and once he says leave, and he refuses, then he is trespassing. If he is on school property he should expect cops to investigate a strange vehicle on their campus

Visiting the university... Without a visitor pass. I can't just visit my old school willy nilly. It's a security issue especially with school shooters. And especially when they can't see what you are doing they are going to be on edge. That's partly why there are window tint laws.

I don't know about Kansas, but in Texas there is the Penal Code and also the Education Code which governs university and school property. The Education Code says on university property all persons must ID when requested. No reason needed. Do not have to be suspected of a crime. Kansas may be the same. Just FYI for the future Travis.

These guys truly care about the University and the community as a whole. I’m an alum. We have had more than our share of strange folk being next to a state line, so the UPD officer was most likely concerned about the safety side of things. If you have a chance: visit. It’s really a nice place that has come a long way in the last 20 years.
