Regarding turning the wheel to remove the seal (once the snap ring is removed), you have to turn the wheel to the left stop with the engine running (no need to do so forcefully), and the fluid pressure will blow the seal out along with a bunch of oil -- good idea to have a bucket. If the engine isn't running, turning the wheel won't provide you with any help in removing the seal.

You have a new seal kit for a newer model gear box. The thinner of the two seals you have is actually meant as a dust sheild to be installed on the pitman arm side of the snap ring (and can be a major pain to get an old one out). The thicker one is the actual seal. The older models did have a slightly tallerthicker seal. I have no idea if the thinner seal will hold up as long as the thicker one will.

My '93 Ford Ranger had a hardened steel and rubber seal at the leaking output (pitman) shaft. There was no room for a nail set. I broke two bits, that were just walking around anyway. I gave up and got a reman box. The reman has a rubber seal! I guess they want to make it easy when they get that core back.

Haha! Late last year, during a cold rainy night FAR from home, you could find me almost swimming under this same jeep while I was trying to completely remove the dragging exhaust system. I pulled over in a parking lot with this literal river flowing through it.

I know im really late on this, but could anyone tell me if changing the seal in my 97 jeep wrangler would be the same? after i got the pitman shaft off, there is no snap ring or seal in there??? I didnt know if it would be inside the box itself...

This kind of stuff only breaks when it's cold. The funny thing, I can't remember if I mentioned, the leak was from the tranny hose on the radiator resting on top of the gearbox.

HarryHydro said: "This kind of stuff only breaks when it's cold." Ain't it the truth? This winter my furnace, water heater and truck all failed at the same time!

I have a question how do you get a snap ring out where the holes are broken you can't use your snap ring pliers so I can remove the Pitman arm seal ?

RAM121264 You might try prying picks. You'll need 2. Get one in the groove pulling the clip inward, and another under the clip pulling out.
