If you give prison inmates the chance to better their education, learn life skills, and even have a healthy relationship with another living being as these inmates have with these dogs, when they leave prison they will not be filled with hatred for the society that incarcerated them. They might just realize that their former behaviors are to blame, and choose to embark on a positive path. The object of imprisonment should be rehabilitation, not punishment. This is why for-profit privately-owned prisons are doomed to failure, and why they are NOT a money-saving venture. The purpose of a for-profit Prison is PROFIT, not rehabilitation.

Darren Nicholls Totally agree. When Canada switched to a rehabilitation based program from a punitive system, I - like many others I thought it was nuts, a "liberal" idea gone mad, but the results don't lie, and our rate of recidivism has dropped quite a bit since then, and the number of former criminals who have not only re-entered society, but have become *contributing* members of our society has risen yearly. The "prison-industrial" system in the States meanwhile, is just the latest iteration of slavery, get young blacks and latinos right from schools, and never let them go. The scary part is that nobody (in power) ever seems to realize what's happening to the prisoners in the for-profit system - they don't even finish their sentences before they're charged with something else (often trumped up charges involving disputes with guards (and yes, the "trumped up" thing was deliberate ) 😂), meaning that they have no hope of ever regaining their freedom. When people have nothing to lose, the results can be messy. I wish my neighbours would fix America, as I used to like them - they were a little over-bearing, kinda crazy (in an endearing way), and a little bombastic, but they were friendly, generous to a fault, and truly believed that their country was about freedom. Sad. Bigly.

Darren Nicholls, this is the one sector where other countries should look to Norway. But it's not a perfect system, we struggle with professional thieves from eastern Europe that see our system as a opportunity to earn some quick money without risking a long sentence. Another aspect is that in the short run it cost a lot of money, that means that US need to raise their taxes. I highly doubt this will be accepted after observing how much trouble Obama had when he tried to introduce Obamacare. A third aspect is that revenge is not a part of our culture. As a Norwegian I think that people that do bad things should go jail but when they have finished their sentence or when a couple of psychologists say that an inmate is rehabilitated he should be free to go on with his life. I think it's to easy to say that Norway have the perfect prison system. Who knows how things might have looked if we had the same amount of poor people as the US? When people feel that they have no hope, that the government is working against them, not helping crimes might seems like the only solution to live a half decent life.

  • @alexkuhn5188

Morten Ringdalen so you live in Norway? How do you like living there? I am genuinely curious, I know that Canada has a program that helps youths develop a positive relationship with the police, I don't know if they still do this or not but when a police officer sees a young person doing something good like looking both ways before crossing the street they give them a special type of ticket that it is a good thing if you receive one as it shows you are doing the right thing. One of my teachers likes to play video for the whole class that can teach us things about others or just videos that are enjoyable to watch.

Pitbulls are perfect dogs for such a program. They love to be touched and they are expressive, so they give the inmates what they lack. I've always had pits, so I know how they can reach inside your soul and heal what's hurting you. Because they've been dumped in shelters, they understand rejection; if you're unwanted by your family or society, a pit will take you into his heart. Just watching the reaction of the inmates to the dogs says it all.

I don't think they're perfect for this because they'd be better than other dogs, that pitbulls unlike other dogs love to be touched or are expressive or have the capability to reach inside your soul and heal you, all dogs do that. What makes it perfect to me is that pitbulls indeed get rejected, very often end up in a shelter just to be euthanized because they look scary and have a bad reputation. To give them a second chance like this is sooo much better than giving the cute little ones that are much more likely to get adopted.

i used to overlook or be afraid of animals most of my life despite my grand parents had a farm. In 2011 a cat was on my porch and I gave her some bread that she rejected. I learned better and she came daily as my husband and I fed her daily and enjoyed her stays. That one cat taught me to love, care and respect animals. Here it is 2021 and I ended up caring for over 50 cats and their kittens.

lukas wildau The majority of people in jail in the US are there for non-violent drug charges, which are completely unfair & counterproductive for progress in society. Until drugs are legalized & regulated, it's unsafe for everyone & these jail sentences/charges ruin more lives than the drugs themselves may. Your comment is not only extremely naive, but heartless. Jail is supposed to rehabilitate, for everyone's good. Furthermore, the US has actually made a monetary incentive to create criminals out of thin air(by criminalizing drugs) & stock holders literally profit off of these people's misery. That is downright immoral & disgusting. Everything was fine before they criminalized drugs in the US. There was no reason to do so, except to keep lower classes down(one of Nixon's admins actually admitted this recently & we have the records to back it up - they made drugs illegal to be able to target & jail leftists/"hippies" & African Americans, politically). Regulation was enough before & it's sufficient now. Overdosing also plummets when they're decriminalized, just see Portugal's stats. Please don't make such blanket statements in the future.

it was short but man it made me tear up a bit. Something as simple as contact from an animal can change so many dynamics in this situation, for the better.

I think that's an excellent program. Most of these prison inmates have been failed their whole lives by the people who were supposed to love and care for them, but with a dog, they can now experience unconditional love. What better way than with a dog that has been rescued off the E list. It's a win/win situation.

I think this is an AWESOME idea. Give these dogs a second chance and also reminds inmates of compassion and the love of a first pet they may have had as a kid. All around good for everyone

This is reform that really works. Hearts have to change before behavior can. Love makes the heart pure. Let's have more of these programs. The cost is well-spent.

I think this is the best rehab program for inmates i have ever seen. Maybe some of them feel love for the first time and maybe some of the dogs feel it too for the first time.

These programs are so beneficial to the men, the animals and the families who eventually adopt these pets, that I cannot understand why there isn't one in every single prison. Everyone has the right to love and be loved.

PBS did a special on this, I think I cried the whole time while watching. Amazing programs! The also did extensive trading for therapy/emotional/guide dogs. They should have this in every prison system! 🐾❤️🐾
