Piston Rings FAILED! - Can It Run Again? Barn Find 1958 Plymouth

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

"And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not." -Galatians 6:9
This 1958 Plymouth recently started up for the first time in 15 years, but once it ran, it decided to lose compression across all six cylinders. I'm not giving up though, which is why I'm doing whatever it takes to get this car back up and running like it deserves! Think we can bring it back to life after having six dead cylinders? Stick around to find out!

My vote is for the six to live on. You’ve got those blokes in Canada that get old engines in much worse shape going and back to daily driver status with little more than a hammer, file, smoke wrench and a few screwdrivers and wrenches. If you start throwing modern v8 motors in this car then you wind up replacing everything that makes it go and stop. Motor, transmission, rear end, brakes, suspension, wheels and everything attached to them. You have a shop and field full of go fast cars and trucks. A slow one like this has its own charms. You guys just got back from the Hot Rod Power tour where you spent a week playing with slow 6 shooters and you all had a good time.

Before you finish the walls, you should install a large exhaust fan on one end of the building. The previous owner of my shop building did and it's great for exhaust evacuation. It also works for drying the floors on those spring days when the concrete is cold and the warm humid air makes the floor sweat.

I understand you fully about an upgraded engine swap. That said, there is something about THIS ride that begs for every effort short of a rebuild to be made to keep the original flat six under the hood. Pulling off the head, playing valve bongos with gentle ball-peen hammer taps (pretty sure there are some stuck valves in the two bubbly cylinders!), wire-wheeling the head, making sure the lifters are functional and honing the cylinders will go a long way in letting you know if this mill will live to go down the road. If the cylinder walls are too ridge-y or pitted after you get the valves to work... time for an engine swap! Cool episode - this rig has my attention!!!

Yep, I always enjoy seeing the original stuff restored and fully functioning as intended. Very rare to see stuff like this these days, usually people rip that stuff out for something better. I can't say I blame them but that's not the point. Not everything needs to be able to do a wheely or run 150mph.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels this way. I really enjoyed the video, but the end was a gut punch. I'd really hate to see a V8 put in this car. V8 swaps are dime a dozen. Keeping the 6 will keep the car's character and it's just a cool old engine. IMO those old 6 are a lot more simple than any V8 anyway.

That was a great video. I’ve had many old cars just to get me to work. Most of them ready for the bone yard when I bought them. My two boys drove them when I moved up to another fine piece of iron. I taught them the basics. Now they also enjoy the miracle of old cars. One thing I did a lot was just pulling or pushing them down the road a while. I was always amazed by how many would just perk up again. Hang in there.

Hey Dylan , i’ve been watching your videos for a very long time my friend , and i’ve been showing my friends what you’re doing here with these “old ladies” and it’s just fabulous to see someone so young to have such great knowledge of mechanics doing what your doing . Also your community here is absolutely great and i love the fact that you listen to your people while you work on these engines which is fantastic . Now , the reason i decided to comment is because i’d really like you to give that engine in particular a real second chance . Big fan of old V8’s here even if i’m European (Romanian, but live in the UK) . Why don’t you try to restore that engine instead of swaping it ? I know it would be much easier to find parts and stuff for the newer ones but can’t you make an exception this one time and actually strip the original apart and fix it back to brand new ? I mean when it started the first time , it just remembered me of that “Thriller” video of Michael Jackson when his car runs out of gas in the woods . I swear to God that Plymouth engine sounds absolutely fabulous when it’s on its normal idle . You get that very old kind of engine idle . Please take it in consideration if you can . Your “European” subscriber Flo .

I see a 1972 Chevelle at the garage too. This other classic can be road restored easier. Then we can use the Chevelle for trips to find genuine Mopar parts to fix and rebuild the engine (or find a newer one for the beloved 1958 Plymouth). Scott has a just recently completed a 1960 Plymouth Fury that he made out of a Dodge and a Plymouth. You can watch the entire process on the website. Scott has real talent with bodywork and painting among all his other skills. You'll see the '60 Fury come from junk to jewel before your eyes. The '59 Fury work is "next" he says. The head is EASY to remove on a flathead 6, the sump probably can be removed with the engine in place, so you could rering it free up the valves put her back together again. IF you do get it running as is?? A few heat cycles, let it get fully warmed up, and let it cool down, do that a few times the rings might free up and come back to life. That starter has put in the Hard yards to get it running!! Smoke; burning off the products added in the cylinders!! Dylan you have been around cars long to know when an engine is tired or not, reringing the engine will not cost a huge amount.
