"When Giovanni Battista Pirelli got his start making rubber products in 1872, the internal combustion engine was still decades away. Before long, the Milan-based company was making rubber pieces for carriages and horse riggings, and by 1894 Pirelli was manufacturing the newly invented "clincher" style of bicycle tires."
Nowadays, Pirelli manufactures tires for automobiles, motorcycles, truck & bus, and is the official tire supplier to Formula One. Just a few years ago, Pirelli ventured back into the world of bicycle tires. The company has an extensive range of gravel tires, one being the Cinturato Gravel M.
Pirelli Cinturato Gravel M:
"The Cinturato™ Gravel Mixed Terrain is a gravel-specific tyre designed for mixed terrain, where the surface varies between compact and unstable terrain and all intermediate types. The tread consists of knobs with average height and spacing to guarantee excellent performance on a wide range of terrains."
"The special SpeedGRIP Compound adds features of mechanical resistance and chemical grip without compromising the rolling efficiency. Cinturato™ Gravel Mixed Terrain is a high-performance tyre with unique characteristics of grip in all weather conditions, be they dry or wet, plus a high level of puncture protection."
In this video, JOM of the Gravel Cyclist crew reviews the Pirelli Cinturato Gravel M tire, and runs it through a bunch of real-world riding in Florida, Georgia, and Arkansas, at the 2021 Big Sugar Gravel Race. Weights, specs, and more are also covered in the review.
The Pirelli Cinturato Gravel M is available in 700c x 35mm, 700c x 40mm (the size reviewed), 700c x 45mm, 650b x 45mm, and 650b x 50mm.

I've been using these tires for the last 6 months and they are true all condition tires. Great grip in mud, sand, and rocky conditions and the center bead allows for smooth rolling on tarmac. Zero flats and plenty of tread left. Nice review.

I’ve been running the Cinturato M in 40mm since the start of summer. Love them. Used them for bike packing over summer with big miles on road, gravel and single track in the British weather (absolutely chucking it down) and they never missed a beat. A bit of a drag on tarmac but not enough to concern and they were brilliant off road. Won’t be going back to WTB Riddlers or Resolutes which I find can be a bit prone to punctures.

I've tried both Gravel H and Gravel M in the 45mm width. They're both reliable and fast but the Gravel M is noticeably slower on what I consider normal gravel. It really shines on singletrack and mud and rough rutted roads, etc. The Gravel H is more of a normal gravel tread and is fast rolling and very well suited for long rides on typical Kansas gravel roads. I swapped to the Gravel M for BWR Kansas and it was a mistake. They were awesome on the singletrack but slowed me down significantly on the other 90% of the course. For a rougher/sloppier course like the Big Sugar they make perfect sense. They're one of the few 45mm options which is why I decided to try them in the first place and I'm glad I did, I've got about 2000 miles on the H with no issues.

This thing chews through mud you just have to continue pedalling :D and it rolls quite nice on tarmac as well. Especially in winter in Europe it is great. I bought this tire because part of my routes are on gravel roads. Towards the end of the year the roads are usually hard pressed and I would be able to drive on any tire, but this Pirelli makes it easier when they have has drawn new surface to gravel and its sloppy and slippery on a normal tire. When I drop the pressure to 1.7 bar it is easy to go with this 45mm wide gravel m pirelli.

I have also been riding the M for bikepacking trips. I use the 650b x 500mm and have done the Oregon Outback which has every type of gravel you can imagine. Good roll, great traction and durable. What are your thoughts on the tires “suppleness”? The 650 x 50mm have a lot of air volume and can run at low pressures, so they suck up the bumps. I run Rene Herse tires on my 700C wheels as I can only go to 43mm on the tires.. so really need to use the sidewall construction to smooth out the ride. How are the Pirelli’s?

  • @vitalykvashin97

I really like how this tire rolls on asphalt and off-road. But there is a big minus if you use no-tubes. When the central tread is punctured, it does not hold pressure in a tightly inflated tire of about 3 bar. The hole is constantly opened and sealed with mucoff sealant until it is lowered to a fairly soft state. Punctures in other places are closed once and do not bother. I will try stans no tubes and if it does not help, then look for another tire ..

Pirelli made bicycle tires many years ago. I have the cinturado h in 35’s on Roval Terra wheels. My rides usually consist 75% pavement and 25% gravel. These tires are fast and grip well on hard pack. The quality and flat resistance is outstanding with the exception of goat heads. There is no tire that will resist them! My only complaint was when I set them up tubeless they didn’t hold air well. I used Stans and later found out that it’s not very good sealant. The 2 flats I had were from goat heads. The first didn’t seal until there was about 15# in the tire. When I added air the seal broke and started leaking. The second puncture didn’t seal at all. Calling Stan’s a sealant is an oxymoron! I’m running tubes in these tires now. I’ll go back to tubeless with orange seal when I mount new tires. These tires have almost 1500 miles on them and still have quite a bit of tread! I will try the cinturado m when the conditions warrant. Pirelli makes very good tires. They’re made by Hutchinson using Pirelli’s tread compound.

I’ve got about 1000 hard miles on my 700x45c Ms, and they have to be the best all around tires I’ve ever used. These replace Riddlers 45c which sustained numerous punctures that sealed up eventually, where as the Pirelli has none. Also the riddlers wore down incredibly fast and were toast before 1000 miles. They role fast, feel a little stiffer (think Pathfinder Pro) and crazy good consistent grip, even in cornering at speed.

Thanks for a great video! I have just purchased a pair of Pirelli Cinturato Gravel M tyres in a 622-45mm format. I will be using them with a hookless rim wheelset. When looking at the tyre I was very surprised to see that the minimum recommended tyre pressure was 36psi. While this would be (just about) OK for a 80kg rider on roads, it is much higher than the SRAM and Silca tyre pressure tools would suggest if riding on gravel (the reason I’ve bought the tyres). Again for a 80kg rider they would propose 27psi (front) and 29psi (rear) for riding on gravel in the wet. And for a lighter rider it would be even less. Any ideas why there is a 36psi minimum tyre pressure?

These are complete garbage. mine leaks where the white wall meets the bead. they completely deflate within a day. And twice the price of many other tyres. dont waste your time or money

Had one do that within a month and got replaced under warranty, replacement lasted about a year before doing same ! Now using new gravelking and early impressions are very good
