Hell yes dude! Burn them rods. Burn a 50 lb box of 3/ 16 70+ or 7010's on some BARE 24" .500 WALL, NOT BEAD HP or filler, ( you already got that ) master the cap. Then move on to bevels. You see, take way more time to get that puddle cao, that beads! You know. Get after that line pipe!

thats looks pretty impressive bud. ive been welding bout 7 yrs now but im a structural man, purely 7018s. never had a chance to do some proper pipe welding. im curious as to how the weld pool behaves when your coming down on the vertical face of the pipe. I wouldnt mind seeing this filmed through a welding glass so i can see whats going on in there. have you done any like this?

I've always used 6013 for the root and 7018 for the rest, but that was back it welding school. (BOCES) Is what the school was called but i do mostly fabricating now where i work. Mostly stainless and aluminum. Tig and mig mostly.

Yes jack I agree to each there own... I hear miller makes an excellent tig machine but I've never tigged alot of my welding is done off ladders and lifts so I have to use an engine drive stick machine

How does a guy get into pipe welding? I am a stick welder aws certified but i really want to weld pipe. Any info will be appreciated.

why are there so many welders in one pipe? how did they do that? did they use 1 ground source?

Well, than I guess I was wrong...but the downhill penetration and fusion are less stronger if used for filler passes. I weld high pressure vessels and reactors...we use downhill for root pass only. I did some pipewelding in Maine few years ago. The WPS requireded downhill for the root pass only... But different places- different techniques I guess. Sorry if wrong again. Stay safe RESPECT

Im a welder at a quarry so most of the work I do is on crushing plants and heavy equipment, most of the time I use 7018. Im wanting to get into pipe welding, before I apply for a job somewhere is there any pointers you can give me or anything I should know? I know you guys use a lot of 6011 for the roots and thats one thing Im worried about, I never really use 6011. I plan on burning a lot of before I test though.

Too late. Not a pipeliner or a welder. But from what I hear: it’s basically about knowing the right people and being at the right place and right time. Look to be a helper on a pipeline and go from there. One pipeliner said his advice is to learn the whole job and understand how it all works. Not just one part. It’s where most fail. They just do the damn thing without knowing why they’re doing it and how it all comes together. Hope this helps and isn’t too late tbh.

Uh... not sure why I'm here but I got a question for you pros: From I have understood so far, in order for the arc to be made, doesn't the pipe itself has to be plugged to an electrode? Like to close the electric 'circuit'? And then if yes, isn't that unsafe for the other dudes to lean on the pipe then? Hey, I'm just passing by and I'm curious ya know :D

You do realize that 7024 is for flat and horizontal only and they are working on a pipeline. They are also probably using 6010 but i may be wrong.
