PIPELINE WELDER AGE (HOW OLD IS TOO OLD TO START)

PIPELINE WELDER AGE (HOW OLD IS TOO OLD TO START)
Austin Ross answers to the question of how old is too old to become a pipeline welder? When are you too old to start welding? As with most life advice it is hard to give a definite answer, but here are some things to consider and the main reason you don’t see a lot of old welders or rold timers welding. The rig welder age range is greater than the pipeline welder age. Take these things into consideration and ask yourself if it is pipeline you want to do or would being a rig welder of a different practice suit you better? The answer to how old do you have to be to be a pipeline welder is less about actual age and more about how old you feel. Technically if you are older than 18 you can be a pipeline welder!!

I thought I was too old to start welding but no one has discouraged my from starting at this age. But like you say, this isnt about a number, its about how you feel.

I’ve passed quite a few of the 6G downhill tests and done an inverted tee for practice. Loved every minute of it. Thanks for the great videos. They are an inspiration to me.

Austin -- I'm 53 and feel I can stay in step with anyone that is 20 and probably outdo most 20 year olds. They say most kids graduating from high school can't do 17 pushups to meet the basic military physical. I do 3 sets of 30 every day and try and squeeze in a mile run every other day and I work 10 - 12 hours a day. I think as long as you can get in the truck and jump in the ditch, you should work..LOL, but that is just me.

At 53, which is similar to my age, we might be able to do better than the 20 year old's, But not because were in better shape of any sort, It's because they're 20 Thinking about everything else except what they're working on, because they have the rest of their Life on their Mind, We have the remainder of the day and what's for dinner on ours!

I'm 22. And I have to agree. My generation is a bunch of fucking pussies. Don't get me wrong, I like video games and sitting here watching TV in my underwear, but I know hard work. I cut concrete for almost 3 years, working anything from 12 to 20 hour days 6-7 days a week for 10 months straight. If you don't know much about concrete cutting, or concrete in general, it's laberous. And I can say I didn't make anywhere even close to what these guys are making. I also got to sleep in my own bed, even if it was only for a couple hours.

My first pipe job was for J Ray McDermott on 8" pipe in the bead shack on a lay barge. I'm nuclear welding these days. I need cateract surgery so I'll have that done and then get back under the hood. I feel great and still push wheelbarrows full of dirt and rocks to make money as I own a landscape company. I’ll have my welding certificate this spring. I’m not quite sure which direction I’ll go when I finish up with school but from what I’ve heard it might be a good idea to get into a welding shop in town and then branch out from there. In the past I’ve done some Mig production welding and a little SMAW but not enough to show that I know much. That’s why I decided to take the time and get into a welding school. If anyone has any tips on what one should do after completing welding school I’d like to hear about it. But yeah, at 47 I feel pretty good!

My 78 year old uncle would say dead , He last summer renewed his "B" pressure ticket to weld pipe and wants to weld for one of his sons running a tie in crew . His last job was for another son on a tie in crew a couple of years ago for 11 weeks . I guess if you have a pulse and are breathing , big inch tie ins are physically the least demanding . In respect to my uncle welding wise he has always been good at it . Even now with the cheater lenses and bifocals his repair rate is almost zero . My guess is he'll have a phone in his pine box and will answer the call to go to work . The only thing that would stop him would the ghost busters . hahahaha

I got a question. What kind of trucks do you see on the pipeline ? I just bought a 2003 f350 7.3 power stroke and got it all rigged up at 17 years old. Once I make some money I want to upgrade to a more serious and permanent truck. Was just wondering about the dodges and there body and part quality, also does the IFS of GM hold up? And how are the Ford's? Big question is with your experience what trucks do you see most and have best luck with

I've always driven a Dodge, but doesn't mean I always will. Pipeline rigs are usually one ton dually. I can't say I see more of any one brand. It's a wind range of years, packages and Dodge, Chevy, GMC, and Ford are all popular. Everyone has their preferences and every truck has it's pros and cons. There isn't a one size fits all. Some care more about the motor and some about the interior. I like a reliable vehicle and that's my top priority but all of these brands have that.

im 51, but most of the time most days 25-35, sometimes I feel my age, but on rare occasion, I may feel 80 or more, already tried to push myself several days this year & had my back go out for a few days, but 1 day off work to recover, which I only called out on my second job, and was back to normal in 3 days. but been 8 years since had it happen with my back. & its an issue that does concern me, but it always hurts, but I ignore it, I hurt my back when I was 10 years old, & 99.5% of time most people have no idea, & I outwork many of my co-workers, I have to really push myself, this time it was 5 full truck loads of scrap metal, loaded & unloaded that did me in a couple days. I am burned out of my 3 jobs, I need a change, & my primary job that I used to enjoy, I now hate thanks to management changes, I am looking for a way out, rig truck local, or pipeline, not sure if my areas can support a welder, but plan to at least try as soon as I am able to build truck. if not I will do whatever I have to, but as for bills, I am around 3 years from being 100% out of debt, just working like I am presently.

I think old is when you cant hardly do anything physically anymore. I'm 36 and still wanting to rig weld buy life has thrown me diffrernt circumstances so far but I still have that desire to have my own rig and weld pipe! Been wanting to do it since I was a kid but helping here at the ranch and starting my own family has really slowed it down for me. I have worked as heavy equipment operator but it's not as satisfying as running a bead!

Im 29 and depending on the day I either feel like im turning 21 or 70. Joined the army at 18, worked on and crewed UH60s for 6 years and have been installing septics and turning wrenches and welding for 4 years now. My body has several issues from my time in the army. Just depends on how much IbProfen I take in the morning

Age will vary per person and there situation. I’m 31 and i got little kids all 10 and under. It would def be a good experience to go chase some money on the pipeline for a year but I could never be away from my kids that much and I’d never uproot there life for my work. If I was single I’d def do it.

Hi Austin , I'm 45 years old Been thinking a lot about getting into school for welding. Did you go to a school for this, a lot of people I talk to about this say that yes getting some. Education and knowing the theory is good but when you apply for a job the boss man doesn't care if you have all these certifications, if you can't weld you won't get hired. Wanted to know your thoughts on this.

U can buy from pipe from junkyards or use thicker fence pipe but honestly brother u can get the same effect with flat plates grind bevel and land set it flat set it on 45° beads a bead man and it's way way way faster to set up some plate than pipe if u don't have a bevel machine . Just soak that bead in and think slow ur body is going to run over ur mind until u start getting muscle memory . Learn burn then Ull earn
