Johnny Boy Gomes takes down the world champion Kelly Slater in Round 1 and then again in Round 2 on his way to his TRIALS to CHAMPION- PIPE MASTER win! RAW 16mm film footage by the legendary filmmaker Sonny Miller (1960-2014).
The Pipe Masters is the most prestigious surf contest in the world. The event occurs at Banzai Pipeline, on the North Shore of Oahu, in Hawaii.
Kelly Slater had won the previous Pipeline Masters- 1994, 1995, and 1996 and was the favorite again until he lost to JBG in Round 1 and was given a 17th-place result after being beaten by Johnny Boy Gomes in Round 2.
"I'm disappointed to lose out so early," said Slater. "I fell on four good barrels and surfing against a guy like John at Backdoor and Pipe you can't afford to make those kind of mistakes. I've had a pretty good string of luck here but it had to run out some time. The finish of the season wasn't so great for me. I wanted to do well in the Triple Crown but I didn't have such good results. The past few contests have been a little disappointing for me but the rest of the year was good."

That’s the truth. Saw you first time at Makaha surfing around 1998. I was living there in that round house by the KlausMeyer reef there. Caught so manny good waves. I’ll never forget seeing you surf because I had seen you in the mags when I was a kid. Hope you’re doing well. 🤙🏽
I surfed in the 80's with JBG many times. He's easily my pick for GOAT. After four years of living on The North Shore and driving to the West Shore ....a LOT, I saw everyone that was anyone. Hundreds of pros. He was my favorite.... by a stretch. BUT ! ! ! .... I never saw Dane Kealoha, the Backdoor King. So....

Sup Francus. Living in Hawaii all throughout the 90s was insane. JBG was dating my best friend's sister and my first 48 hours off the plane, I was playing basketball with Dane and Wayne boy and Junior Moepono. Days of privilege, does guys treated me so well

@mattgurin6168 Mr too. My army boss was a Waianae heavy hitter. I got introduced to so many.... The Keaulanas, JBG, Marvin, Perry,, and more. Sunny (rip) told me my boss and friend was his favorite surfer growing up.... Best four years of my life.

Never heard of Sonny Miller. I searched. He was a real pioneer and legend. But most of all, he was a really nice person. The Wizard of Oz said, "Never forget. You are not judged by how much you loved, but by how much you were loved. Sonny was very loving and was LOVED very much. I'm glad I looked him up.

@@francus7227 yes I do! All the Frmans ripped,and charged! Brother randy too! If I do,see him, will tell him , howzit 4 u! I know almost every surfer who went school on the westside, I was a high school teacher in WAIANAE, and retired in 2016, 30 + years. Enjoying retirement! Peace! RAMP , won't forget!

@@MK-su6eg We were in the Army together. Being from Florida, I really surprised him. We're about even at surfing. So we always had this little competition going. I used to surf Yok's with Warren.... Stuart's wife's brother. Best four years of my life. Get Stuart to tell you how he got the Army to send both of us to California to surf in an all armed forces surf contest. It was three days long. But Stuart told them we needed 10 days to warm up. We surfed up and down the coast..... Thanks.
