Tom-Carroll 1991 Pipemasters Semi and Final

Спорт

Tom Carroll, 1991 Pipe masters, the snap, and the two-ten final, the day after his sister dies. Taking off in front as Derek Ho just hangs on to his board to punch through the lip thinking it was too late....

Kelly can ride Pipe but TC rode it with such dominance, you’d swear he was spat from Pipe tube at birth… even for a haole. The late take off, the turns and floater like he was surfing 4ft slop was insane but that snap under the lip!?! Whoa, that’s still the most savage move I’ve seen in surfing to this very day. Respect TC, you are a beast👊🏾

I grew up in Newport Australia and I was lucky enough to see him in the water a few times a week, to see it is another level, he'd demolish waves like a pit bull, just chucking buckets of water everywhere

I remember when that snap was shown in a photo in Surfer Mag, it was the most radical thing I'd ever seen. Still is really when you think of the power he put in it and the power of the wave. He made it look easy but that was because he timed it perfectly and his massive balls swung him round like a pendulum!

At the time no one charged pipe like Tom Carroll. That signature snap under the lip was unbelievable and jaw dropping to watch. Definitely one of the best surfers at pipe all time.

Great respect for Tom's surfing back then. His charging at the Pipe was quite memorable, and yes, legendary. I wish him well for the days left in front of him. Great footage, thanks so much.

The late drop calling Derek's bluff for one of 2 tens in the final is the most committed late drop in pipe comp history. Then he dropped another 10 before that and a 8. 🐐 of pipe late 80s early 90s

You got your dates wrong. His sister died in 1987, before the final which he won in murky waters and heavy Pipe. 1991 was the end of an era, with Curren winning the Wyland Pro at Haleiwa and Carroll winning at Pipe for the last time. The age of the backsiders had already started in 1991. Kelly Slater that year made it to the semis at Pipe, with some incredible backside barrels, thus qualifying for the 1992 tour which he went on to win in his first try, along with the 1992 Pipe masters.

They would and just did deem that size uncontestable. Because the Brazilians couldn't handle it....I remember watching pipe masters on ABC wide world of sports in the mid 70s. Waves were huge and guys like Jose Angel charged. Guess I'm showing my age. Left a piece of my asscheek on the reef in 86. Still have the scar. Humbling frightening place
