Pipe Clamp $2 Piston Ring Compressor works a charm Willys Jeep Engine Rebuild

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Piston ring compressors bought online just don't work - they are just too cheap and too nasty. So I make my own from bits in the workshop.

Great job….if you had shortened the tube at the nut end , the threaded end would have stuck out more and made it easier for you 👍🏻🇬🇧

Between the 50s and the late 80s, all the piston ring compressor sold in the UK were made by a two men company in Sheffield, of course sold by all the major brands in the UK at the time, even the foreign import couldn't compete on price at that time. They closed down sometime in the late 80s probably retired. Weird how their output almost perfectly matched the UK demand

I probably bought a small one of those when I rebuilt my Fiat 850 Sport Coupe engine in the mid 70s. It worked perfectly as far as I remember. I may still have it somewhere but I've not seen it for decades! I won't have thrown it away 😀

Probably could sell it for a good price. There aren't any decent ones around for under £50

Weird, I used to use one that was adjustable and you just levered it to the side to lock and it worked flawlesly and I just searched and can't find its design being sold anywhere.

I see that there are also 'pipe clip' styles also being sold but they don't have complete enclosure unlike yours.

I had a look around for something that might work but gave up and needed to get the pistons in the holes. These shitty clamps are ubiquitous and sold under many brands all of which are tatt.

I bought a draper (I think it the maker?) 40 years ago Simla to yours works great 👍 you made a great job modification on your pipe clamp the one thing I would have done would have used a angle grinder to remove the largest waist the trued up in lathe, ps what’s the engine you’re doing as 4 of my cars are side valves 😀

Snap-on might be the last chance saloon for a decent one, don't seem to make these in Europe

I don't own any Snap-on tools but I might give them a try. I have a car lift tucked around the back of the garage as the family has 5 cars to maintain and I just don't trust mechanics, The last straw was when I asked the local 'trusted garage' to do my Range Rovers propshaft . I supplied 2 x OEM UJs for him to do a good job. Six months later it failed and this time I took it off myself and found that they had only changed one of the UJs. They charged me for changing both and kept or sold the other one. People around here think that they are a good garage but they are blissfully unaware of what is going on.

A fun game of wack a moe, did you oil the rings and bore to make them slippery? What a silly thing to say, of cause you did. I liked the modding of a rather strong pipe clamp, nothing weedy there :-D. That pipe clamp makes a real jubilee clamp look under fed.

Thanks. I lubed her up good and proper. I love these clamps. They aren't too pricey (about £2.00 each) delivered.
