► Check Out The Practice Accelerator Here: bit.ly/2TNuR2W
So, Pino Palladino and Joe Dart are both awesome bass players...
And, they both do a very specific thing with their bass technique.
This specific thing they do gives them the ability to play fast lines, licks and grooves in a super clean way without stumbling over themselves and ending in a whole hot mess...
In this lesson I'm going to show you the thing they're both doing, give you video examples of them both doing it...
And, on top of that give you one of the best exercises you can ever use to give you the ability to play fast lines and runs on the bass.
As always, see you in the shed...
Scott :)

When I said he was an idol it meant he's on the spotlight and lots of people recognize him. He aint a legend or up the ranks of the greats but he's inspiring nontheless. Other bassists borrow styles, Joe too, but he has new stuff on the table as well. He's a great bassist from this era. I dont wanna complicate things all bassists are cool in every way :)

I like JD. You can tell within a few notes when it's him, from the sound and the notes he plays. Sure, he's standing on the shoulders of giant funky bass players, but he's managed to carve his own identity and he's done it with a lot of skill and musicality. Good on him.

Absolutely no comparison. Have you actually heard Jaco's compositions? Joe Dart is a musical infant in comparison. I can't believe (well, actually I can,) Scott Devine giving Joe Dart so much kudos. And why does everyone talk about him as though he's their best mate? Something quite creepy about this cult of Dart. If he had been playing twenty five years ago, no one would have taken any real notice. Emperor's new clothes part 685!

@@thewomble1509 what I find mildly creepy is your apparent need to reply on every other commenter who thinks of Joe Dart as a great bass player in a frankly, dare I say, condescending manner - as if the man had no worth as a musician and each and every one who appreciates him and gets inspired by him is an utter fool and moron. I don't know, I may be completely wrong, but that's how your comments come across to me. I can't say I have an opinion of Joe Dart - never heard of him until maybe a week ago, and the few tunes I've heard I can say he plays well (and the tunes are good). But if people get inspired by watching/listening him play, isn't that a great thing in itself? Maybe some kid will pick up a bass because of this "cult of" Dart, and end up finding out about Jaco and Marcus Miller and the likes...

People look down on speed because they can’t pull it off, but speed is freedom. Playing fast all the time is boring, but being able to play fast when you want/need to is essential. I’m a guitarist, not a bassist, but I love the bass. If I did have the time to play another instrument, which I don’t, it would be the bass. I work on my speed all the time, and slowly, but surely, it comes along. Great video. Keep up the good work.

I'm gonna chime in here for topic #1... though I agree that having the wrist extended (relative to the forearm) is a bad thing, so is having it flexed. Bio-mechanically, it's most advantageous to keep the wrist neutrally in line with the forearm (think of it as having the back of your hand and the back of your forearm in line). I'm not gonna bore ya with the details, but speaking as a physical therapist, all that I know suggests that is the way to go for finger flexibility, dexterity, and injury prevention (alright, I'll bore you a little = think of all the tendons that pass from your forearm to your fingers... the reason they don't bowstring is that there is tissue - a retinaculum - that holds them down at the wrist. When you flex your hand at the wrist, as is suggested in this vid, you're placing a tremendous amount of tension on that tissue and basically are asking for injury. Seasoned players can at times get away with this, especially if they have a great stretching routine as part of their prep, but it's not the preferred way of doing things. It's just a thing peeps do so they can get away with lowering their bass down on their bodies).

Scott, I've played for over 10 years but one aspect of economy plucking I've struggled with is being able to keep the same tempo immediately when economy plucking to a lower string. Say I'm playing a series of 16ths on idk, G on the D string and then I wanna shift to that same groove on the A string. I often find that if this tempo is too fast, it's hard to keep this string of notes going. Any tips on improving consistent economy plucking when ascending up each string?

  • @Terrible_Peril
    @Terrible_Peril4 жыл бұрын

I, much like my biggest bass influence so far, Bobby Vega, was always disappointed by my accented 16ths with fingers. It’s actually what drew me to him after posting about my issue on talkbass many moons ago. Someone suggested, ‘do it with a pick like Bobby!’ So I did. I love playing Vulf songs with a pick. Because I’m a masochist apparently, I’ve gotten to the point of using no pick, but a picking style as if I’m holding one, so I can more easily and fluidly switch to what I find is a superior staccato sound with fingers digging in a bit. So I AM trying to get my finger style chops up to par for the funk lines, but doing them with a pick feels so good. Especially with no drummer, I love creating the backbeat with some arm drops on the accents, which in turn helps my overall feel so when I sit down and try to do it fingerstyle, the groove is already in my body.

You didn't mention thumb placement on plucking hand... for me I switch from anchored on the pickup to floating over the strings depending on playing lower or higher strings.

If your plucking hand is being problematic, my bass teacher has made me float over the E when I play it and rest my thumb on top of the E string when I play the A. He said I slightly change the angle of my PH when I switch from anchored to floating, maybe that'll do something for you ( if it's needed of course )

Weird question Scott, but in my plucking hand the end of my index finger ends at about where the cuticle of my middle finger begins. I'm not sure if this is for most human dudes, but I find myself compensating by slanting my hand a little sort of like Stanly Clarke. Any pro tips? Also sweet vid!

My natural tendency with right hand alternate picking is to start with the middle finger, i.e. m - i - m - i rather than i - m - i - m. Is that something I should try to correct or doesn't it matter too much?

The thumb moves to mute the lower strings when playing on the higher(pitch) strings. If you keep it rooted on the pickup you’ll have to mute with ring finger and pinky

Maxime, the “moving thumb technique” is a good way for 1) damping adjacent strings, and 2) getting the same distance between the strings when you play 5- or 6-string basses. I find this technique very useful for both. On a 4-string bass it works fine to rest the thumb on the pickup but on a wider 5- or 6-string bass you need to have slightly different plucking technique depending on whether you play the low B or the higher, thinner strings. With the moving thumb you always have the same distance and angle to the next string. I started to use the moving thumb technique when I bought my 5-string bass (after playing a 4-string for 30 years) and now I use the same technique for all my basses. Hope this helps.

The secret to playing like great bass players is just to be in complete control of your left and right hands. Easy. Seriously though, I've never seen anyone talk about the wrist of the left hand like that. I always thought it was just a comfort or personal thing, but that makes sense.

why do you say, hopefully you're sitting down when you practice? i come from playing guitar and im trying to learn bass and i often practice standing up because thats how you are when you're playing live. I also find it more comfortable when stood up with a bass guitar. Is there some particular benefit to practicing sat down?
