To me, this has always been the BEST live version of this song to date. I love the three different voices used over the three different parts of this song and they sound amazing.

I don't want to take anything away from these two ladies, in fact they do a terrific job, but for my personal taste there's nothing that compares to Clare Torry who did the original vocals for this track on *_Dark Side Of The Moon._* Due to the fact that she improvised the whole thing during the recording, she has recently been acknowledged as co-writer of the piece. _original version_ kzread.info/dash/bejne/lYp2padsl8S0qMY.html p.s. for those born after 1973 this music has in fact _"always been there"*_

Clare Torry's vocals on the studio version. As the band began casting around for a singer, album engineer Alan Parsons suggested Clare Torry, a 25-year-old songwriter and session vocalist. Parsons had previously worked with Torry, and had liked her voice on a Top of The Pops covers album. An accountant from Abbey Road Studios contacted Torry and tried to arrange a session for the same evening, but she had other commitments, including tickets to see Chuck Berry that evening, so a session was scheduled for Sunday evening between 7 and 10pm. The band played the instrumental track for Torry and asked her to improvise a vocal. At first, Torry struggled to divine what the band wanted, but then she was inspired to pretend that she herself was an instrument. She performed two complete takes, the second one more emotional than the first. David Gilmour asked for a third take, but halfway through Torry stopped, feeling she was getting repetitive and had already done the best she could. The final album track was assembled from all three takes. The members of the band were deeply impressed by Torry's performance, but were so reserved in their outward response that she left under the impression that her vocals would never make the final cut. She only became aware they were used when she saw the album at a local record store, spotted her name in the credits and purchased it. In 2004, she sued Pink Floyd and EMI for songwriting royalties on the basis that her contribution to "The Great Gig in the Sky" constituted co-authorship with keyboardist Richard Wright. Originally, she was paid the standard flat fee of £30 for Sunday studio work. In 2005, an out-of-court settlement was reached in Torry's favour, although the terms of the settlement were not disclosed.[8] All releases after 2005 carry an additional credit for "Vocal composition by Clare Torry"[9] for the "Great Gig in the Sky" segment of the booklet or liner notes.

This is The Best live version of this song. Nothing will beat the Original Album version but as far as live versions of this Rachel Fury is the Best of all the live versions. Thank You for sharing this. By the way saw these same musicians on this A Momentary Lapse of Reason tour October 1987 @MSG in NYC. Backup Singers for 1987-1989 Rachel Fury, Durga McBroom and Margaret Taylor (1987-1988)

I agree 100%. Rachel Fury absolutely killed it on this version. I always loved delicate sound of thunder. When I was 16 years old my friends and I took LSD and watched the VHS version of this. It was life changing stuff. I consider this the best live version of Great Gig.

PINK FLOYD, "GREAT GIG IN THE SKY". Off of the 1973 Iconic Album: DARK SIDE OF THE MOON. In the original, this is done by Clare Torry. About one going through all the emotions of losing your life, the Pain, Denial, Frustration, Anger, Depression. Finally coming too the realization of you're mortal, and death is closing in. Demonstrated by her quieting from her screaming and leading with tears in her eyes, as she echoes leaving earth, with the accompanying pianos final chord, and deafening silence. I wouldn't get to worried about the way the band looks in these later concert performances. As I said in the the 70'S their looks probably would been more like what you were expecting.🎶 ✌

I really love the fact that the first time you Ever hearing this song is LIVE with three female vocalist doing a song that was originally done by one female vocalist. BUT.....a song with easily some of the greatest & most fantastic vocals I have ever heard, but with no actual lyrics. yet in the studio she did this song on her VERY FIRST TAKE. I can tell that you are justifiably blown away by the three of Pink FloydS backup singers AND their performance of this song live. But you WON'T be able to FULLY APPRECIATE what these three girls accomplished in a Live performance of this track, until you hear the original recording......I mean how can you create a song THIS FANTASTIC With one of the greatest female vocalists.....when there is not one single word or lyric in the song..... just some of the most beautifully crafted female VOCALS of all time. And truthfully....at the time when she agreed to do this, she barely knew who Pink Floyd was........and hadn't listened to ANY OF THEIR MUSIC

I believe Claire also apologized after the first take. Unbelievable. A bit like Merry Clayton in Gimme Shelter being worried about her voice cracking as she screamed the anger and outrage the song needed.

Wow, I enjoyed that! Thanks, Our Boy. Nice job! I have that cd (Dark Side of the Moon) playing in my car and I am enjoying every track. Just as most of the PF songs, I could listen to this one on a loop and be in my bubble with the walls getting thicker and thicker. Zone, +Zone, ++ Zone, +++Zone.....deeper and deeper until I need to pull over and absorb it completely. I chose this particular version because it included all three ladies singing. All of them are incredible for what they can do. Thanks, again. Our Boy, once again, gave a great reaction! 👏👏

When we think that originally, The Great Gig in the Sky was an innocuous track that was supposed to fill the void ending the side A. Rick Wright had composed The Great Gig in the Sky a long instrumental on the piano then called The Mortality Sequence or The Religion Song which did not yet include the lyric song of Clare Torry but a reading of the Bible, then it was communications from astronauts NASA on a mission.
