he actually made a really good point there, it's the way they did the instrumentation. in the B minor parts, the way the horns are used, and the whole mournful "C#DF# - BDF#" motif , is a classic motif from R&B instrumentation, you can especially hear it in things like Mellow Mood by Barry White or Isaac Hayes / Donald Byrd. 2:25-2:30 you can hear the horn motif of the "C#DC#DC#D" fill into the next bar and how an A (7th) rises above in the background instrumentation, sounding incredibly yearning, these are both classic R&B/soul tropes.

The song is about a performer being given drugs to be pushed out on stage. The drugs make him feel an old feeling of him being sick as a child in which his hands felt light, bloated and barely movable, and yet he's still being force to perform. This is part of the story of Pink in the album The Wall which details the character's isolation from the rest of the world. The song itself was inspired by that exact scenario happening to bassist Roger Waters where he was given painkillers for a fever in order to perform. He felt that those drugs could be enough to kill an elephant. He could barely play and wasn't consciously there.

@@MUSICLOVER23429 All umbrella term genres are hard to define because their definitions likely aren't limited to or include all their subgenres. The most technically correct definition is a genre of guitar-dominated music with a straight 2 and 4 drum beat, given that's what the original meaning of Rock N Roll was defined as in the 1950s when it evolved from Blues, Rockabilly, and Swing. It took the chord structures of Blues, the tempo of Swing, and the rhythm of Rockabilly, as well as the latter's parent name. However, we've since developed Rock so thoroughly that the original definition cannot cover every Rock song. Same goes for Pop, Dance, Hip Hop, Metal, and Electronic. They all have very different subgenres that when you attempt to make a general definition, you're often excluding a good chunk of the genre.

This song is from the album the wall, each song tells a part of an entire story. This song is mainly about how he's started blocking the world out and beginning to slip into madness. In the story drugs and depression are taking its toll and he can't even go on stage to preform so he's given a drug to get him going long enough to do it, but he's just going through the motions (numb). Also, in the story he caught a bad fever when he was young and nearly died, how he's feeling now reminds him of that time when he was very sick many years ago.

Your reaction to this song is 100% genuine and authentic. For me, the first time I heard it, I wad in my car driving. I had to pull off the road so I could cry. There was no way I could feel this and operate heavy machinery safely at the same time. Many, many people have had this response to the song. Your reaction is what makes this channel real, ....and very powerful. I am terribly proud of you for taking a musical journey like this. It helps many understand how it is that music is something everyone can understand. We may all be different in so many ways, yet certain things, like well-crafted music can make the same kind of feelings well up from deep within each of our souls. Well done. Very well done, indeed.

Appreciate the honesty and you had insights into this song I never had before so thank you for that.. I had a similar reaction as you to this song when I first heard it and I was about your age. You’re still young, don’t let a song get you too down. Your spirit of life, positivity and feelings of joy are as legitimate as ever. Everyone ages but we remain who we are. Music notes and thoughts in song can be powerful but upbeat songs are just as real in terms of describing life. As someone wrote below, this evidently is about a time when he had a stomach problem and got some kind of medical injection so don’t let this simple piece of music influence you too much in a dark way. We can celebrate our whole life and our life continues. Great guitar solo though at the end, eh? Beautiful work from David Gilmour.

Back in the day of progressive rock, we didn't try to fully understand lyrics when we first heard a song. Lyrics were something to study and think about later, then re-experience the music with that enlightenment. Go with it the first time, then come back for more. That's the beauty of progressive rock, it keeps getting better with each listen.

Loved your reaction to Comfortably Numb. There are many amazing Pink Floyd songs to discover, including Shine on You Crazy Diamond, Wish You Were Here, and anything from the Dark Side of the Moon album. Pink Floyd transcended regular mainstream rock, and were so innovative that they were considered founders of Progressive Rock. Try also listening to Dire Straits songs, Private Investigation or Telegraph Road, anything from Radiohead's OK Computer album, anything by Genesis, including the solo work of Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins, as well as the mountains of songs by Elton John with Bernie Taupin's lyrics. These icons of rock were not only great songwriters, they were the poets of our time, and their music is still as relevant as ever. Stevie Wonder is another wonderful artist to discover, and is best communicated in the Songs in the Key of Life album. I could go on forever adding to this list with great rock musicians of the 60s, 70s, and 80s, and I am just glad that you are interested enough to discover them yourself. Keep it up.

Pink Floyd had music that was an experience. Their music takes you on a journey. I was lucky enough to see Pink Floyd on their "The Wall" tour, it was the biggest, most expensive rock show in history (at that point,) so it only played in LA for 7 nights, and NY (Nassau Colosseum) for 5 nights in the US, before heading to Europe for a few more cities.

Another all time fave! As far as meaning "... Waters said that much of the song comes from something that really happened one evening when, in order to allow him to perform in Philadelphia, the doctor gave him a sedative for a severe stomach ache, which had probably caused by nerves. On the stage, his hands were numb and his vision blurred, but none of this derailed the crowd, who continued to dance and sing. And it was out of this that one of the main themes of The Wall came about: the disconnect between the public and the band." auralcrave.com/. I'd like to put the guitar at the end on a 10 hr loop.

I was about your age when I first heard Floyd...I am now 52! Good to see the next generation enjoying a genre that’s timeless. Really enjoyed your reaction. Look forward to seeing more of your videos. UK artists from 1960s-1980s were a generation of artists that appealed to a wide audience and still do, many of which were stadium artists and therefore could play all songs live without digital aids. Music is important within the UK, we really do value our artists, hence why they fill stadiums (pre CVD) and venues like Glastonbury sell out.

JoJo, welcome to Pink Floyd's universe! Now that you've listened to the studio version, go to the band's official KZread channel to find their Pulse 1994 concert videos. After listening to the studio version of "Comfortably Numb" many people say that they wished the guitar solo at the end would've lasted longer. Well, David Gilmour granted that wish in concert; many rock music critics rate that solo as the best live guitar solo in history. Other videos from the Pulse concert you should react to are "High Hopes", "Sorrow", and "Run Like Hell", but honestly that entire concert is magnificent. I guarantee if you react to these you'll get a big spike in Views, Likes, and Subs. You can thank me later.
