Two points here, one; BRAVO! Not many people are aware of Pink Floyds early contribution to special lighting effects to augment the concert experience! Well done there! Second, the blond back up singer is Sam Brown who was a solo recording artist around this time and even had a #1 hit on the UK charts. She was offered an opportunity to be a back up singer for these series of concerts and she jumped at the chance to perform with Pink Floyd! That is a demonstration of respect that this band carried!

The meaning of Pink Floyd songs change over time. Listening to The Dark Side of Moon and The Wall now in my 50's is completely different than when I was in my teens and 20's. The beauty of their lyrics and music is they take you on a personal journey which can be different than the original intent of the artists.

their style seems to "do something with time" and given the content of dark-side-of-the-moon, I can't regard that effect as "accidental" in the least way. and we know there is no dark side of the moon. in fact it's all dark.

I was lucky enough to see them at Earls Court for this tour. I was 18! Will never forget it. Still by far the best gig I have been to. I will always remember the deep bass that accompanied the opening guitar chords on Sorrow. I swear I could feel the bass vibrations bouncing off my internal organs!

I was 14 and was in a daze, had no idea that music, visuals and light could be combined in that way. it still is pretty much the one of the best experiences of my life. And for a moment was terrified that the circular screen was falling.

There were over 14000 people in this arena. I saw them in Houston Texas in Rice Stadium, so I know how that sound was in an outdoor setting. I can't imagine an indoor venue sound, especially this performance. This is IMO, the very best performance of this masterpiece, there ever was or will be.

I was fortunate enough to have been there - and not just at the concert, but dead center of the 11th row at Arrowhead Stadium in 1994 (I stilldon'tknowhowwe scored such awesome seats) - and I could weep for your not having gotten the chance to experience that show in person. The concert video is one of the best ever made, and I've watched it all the way through dozens of times. But being immersed in the middle of the live performance was beyond description. If seeing the video were like standing under my shower, being inside the show was like having Niagra Falls thundering down on me - for three straight hours!! It's been almost 30 years, and more than half my [present] lifetime ago, and it still brings a tear to my eye every time I see a video from it. I was extremely fortunate to be there, with some of my best friends around me, and I knew then that I'd never see another show that good again for the rest of my life. I've been to a few other great concerts by some of the top bands in the world, but none of them has held a candle to that show. 91,000 lights, huh? I hadn't heard that, but I can believe it. I don't know how many $millions they spent on the three complete stages & equipment sets that leapfrogged their way around the world that year, but they definitely got their money's worth. LOL, when I get to heaven, one of the things I think I'll ask for is to see that show again! I think they did do one final show together, live at Pompeii. I wouldn't look for them to do another tour though; the original members who are still alive are around 80 years old now!

When I saw them in 73, in Tampa, Fl, they had the round screen and lights. Come a long way. Oh... I was 13 years old .

I love how, in this song, they integrated that nautical music theme into it, like boats floating on the waves. It's a perfect fit with the lyrics about coming through in waves and distant ships out on the horizon. The lighthouse lamp on stage and the mechanical jellyfish slowly floating over the audience are great touches, too.

I am privileged to have seen Pink Floyd with Roger Waters 3 times in the 70s and 80s, Roger Waters at Yankee Stadium, performing "The Wall" and David Gilmour at Madison Square Garden a few years ago. Each show was epic.

3 rows back, on the floor, LA sports arena. David did this solo standing about four stories above the stage, atop the "wall" structure. I had brought BINOCULARS having ever been anywhere except nose-bleed-sections at concerts. I watched his face as he played, and saw what I presume to have been sweat on his lip. And he looked down AT ME. Licked his lips and squinted since I assume in the glare of the lights up there, he would have had trouble making out the black thing in front of my face. For an instant it was just me and him.

The song embarks on an emotional journey into one's past. David Gilmour wrote the music while he was working on a solo album in 1978. He brought it to The Wall sessions and Waters wrote lyrics for it. While many people thought the song was about drugs, Waters claims it is not but rather about an illness he got as s child. However, In the movie "The Wall", this plays in a scene where the main character, a rock star named "Pink," loses his mind and enters a catatonic drug and alcohol induced state before a show. The Doctor arrives and injects Pink with counter acting drugs. The doctor believes that he is in pain, but Pink tells him he's not. There is no pain. He completely exists in a state of mind-numbing peace from the drugs as is expressed in the lyrics, "A distant ship, smoke on the horizon" as he is floating in his state of drug-filled peace. He is … “Comfortably Numb.” The main theme is the distance between our minds perception of reality because of artificially induced relief. Remember, this is only how it plays out in the movie "The Wall." Great Song.

David Gilmore produced one of the greatest solos on record...and twice, in one song!

With the passing of Richard Wright I'm afraid we will never see Pink Floyd live again. Roger did join them for their last ever live performance in Hyde Park at Live 8 in 2008. Roger is currently touring with his This is not a Drill show. Very different from a Floyd show but still a great experience. Nick Mason has been touring as well - but that tour may well be finished now.

For a long time I thought it was about dope. When I was a child, I would get fevers, I would be delirious as my fever broke. So I can relate to these lyrics.

I can write a book about Pink Floyd how they changed my life for the better. Mainly David Gilmour's guitar playing. But let me throw just this out there. At 14:07 of this video, you will understand why a guitar magazine deemed David Gilmour The Undisputed Dean of the Compound Bend and stated that David Gilmour admits he never was a fast playing guitarist but his Note placement is pretty much flawless. I believe Dave Mustaine of Megadeth once said, "David Gilmour can take one note and bend it in ways all other guitarist have trouble doing on the entire fretboard." I first saw em in 73. Picture a 13 year old kid with a beautiful blonde haired hippie chick named Autum McConnell tripping balls 20 yards from the stage in Tampa Stadium. What a great summer. Zeppelin, Chicago, ZZ Top, Deep Purple, The Almond Brothers, on and on. I saw Floyd 4 total. Last in 79. The circular screen was always there. Awesome...

At this point the band had been performing for almost thirty years and this was way back in 94! There were only two members of the original band on stage, but the magic had been kept alive and is still making new fans every day! ILM (Industrial Light and Magic) , the same people who brought you the original special effects of the early Star Wars movies put some effort into making this amazing light show!!! A lot of talent went into making this one of the most captivating performances in all history. I think I like it more every time I'm taken along with it to another dimension of time and space.

it's ONE thing to do an elaborate show like this one ONCE. Quite a different thing to do it for 30 years and still make it PUNCH.

My english High School Teacher had us read this song as a poem

I’m sure others have or will comment that David didn’t write the lyrics, at least most of them. I think he contributed a few words here and there. But he wrote most of the music, actually for a solo album before The Wall came out I believe. He was just humming the verses, as he wasn’t someone who came up with lyrics easily. But if you take the music away, just lyrics, it’s a sorta okay poem. If you take the lyrics out of the music, the music will still make you cry. Together it’s perfect, so I won’t choose. But I do have a preference and it’s David by a mile. Every note somehow says a million words, for me.

Best live guitar solo ever recorded

A curious thing about this song, Roger Waters and Dave Gilmour had a disagreement, (imagine that,.. Gilmour and Waters not agreeing, Haha). Gilmour wanted the song to be a more of a "Rock" song, and Waters wanted the strings and synth orchestrations that the song ended up being. They compromised and Waters got his "strings", and Gilmour got what he wanted near the end of the song when the second guitar solo starts. Notice on the studio version, the strings and synth orchestrations stop immediately when the vocals are over, and it's an overdriven guitar playing the rhythm part, as the solo ends the song. So, they both got a little of what they wanted. The two of them, (Gilmour, and Waters), rarely got along, and by 1985 Waters quit the band saying, I'm paraphrasing here,... 'Pink Floyd is a Spent Entity". Waters was sure the other 3 members of Pink Floyd could not, and would not, be able to continue without him! Obviously he was very wrong, and he knew it. Waters sued the band for their continued use of the Pink Floyd name and material,... he lost the suit. The division between Gilmour and Waters is legendary and listed as the longest rift in Rock Music history. Pink Floyd DID re-unite and perform a few songs at Live 8 in 2005, I think they performed three songs, including "Comfortably Numb". Below is the link to CN from live 8. At the end of the song during the applause, Waters motions to Gilmour, and the others to take a bow together, all 4 members of PF. The crowd went WILD. Marc Brickman was the lighting designer for many large rock shows... Pink Floyd and Paul McCartney were just a couple of the artists. I was lucky to see a Paul McCartney show in 1993 that he definitely was the light designer for, I saw Paul again in 2003... but I'm not sure if Marc did his lights on that tour.

The song was actually written by David Gilmour with completely different and ambiguous lyrics. Roger rewrote the lyrics to make it all about him. it's on here as a short somewhere. David plays the original lyrics.

If you miss Roger, try the reunion concert for live aid...it was a sensation, so much tension on stage that I could hardly believe that they could perform like in former days, but then magic happened...🔥😇 The money and comfortably versions are so raw, short and touching, really a must watch if you love the old 4 Floyds chemistry. Do yourself and for sure us😊 a favour and try that historical achievement of Bob Geldorf who brought them together 😍

Listen to the first guitar solo, then compare it to the second solo. Here is where the band shows their intelligence as well as their musicality. The first solo is played in the major key. It sounds bright, almost hopeful. The final solo is played in a minor key. It imparts anger, regret and loss. Holy Christ! Both set a context for the previous verses. The first one says "Oooh, Comfortably numb! Not a bad way to be." The second solo says "Comfortably Numb. A horrible trap and a loss of my humanity." As someone said "Their words tell you what to think. Their music tells you how to feel about what you think." Amazing.

Being able to listen to and watch updated videos gives you the ability to experience some things you may not have noticed before. With many of Pink Floyd's songs it can be difficult to take in all the elements in just one listen. However, it can be hard to watch the video because you just want to close your eyes and lay back. Hi Millie from Greece! I've been enjoying all your reactions but especially those concerning Pink Floyd. It's one of my favorite bands too. The first Pink Floyd song/album I listened was "Dark Side of the Moon" about 45 years ago and I haven't stopped keeping them in my life since then. It's not very common to see a very young person/artist not only to embrace but actually feel and "understand" the magic of PF. Music written 40-50 (or more) years ago but seems that it was created for "you personally" just... yesterday! "Deep" meanings in their lyrics and amazing mastery and pure genius in each note they share. I would strongly suggest to get a "look" to "Atom Heart Mother" (1970) album. I would also suggest to watch the movie "Pink Floyd: The Wall" (1982) by Alan Parker, which is based on the corresponding album (The Wall). If you don't mind "spoilers" by listening to songs from the album before you react to them, I think you''ll enjoy this! I wish you all the best!

He got sick in his stomach at a concert in Phila The doctor gave him an injection to help his stomach pain before the show started.. He could not feel his bass after the injection hence hands felt like balloons. He played the whole show like this. When the encore came Roger did not return to the stage. This actually happened check out the story a little more. I was living in Phila at the time and maybe I went to the show. It was a high time. Floyd is a great band saw them 3 or 4 or 5 times

Coming back to this video, I may have commented in the past, one thing I want to say about David. I've seen recently John Mayer attempt at this solo. Let me get this straight: I think John is one of the best (if not the best) guitarist of this era. Yet, he failed. I mean, he failed bad. Now, he's very talented and definitely knows music, so he recovered nicely midway. How? Playing more notes. Basicly, playing David's notes sounded boring, so he started playing like triplets instead of single notes, adding all "flashy" ideas he could come up with on the spot. And - mind you - he's amazing. Problem is that's no longer Comfortably Numb, which is not supposed to be flashy. So yes it's not just that David doesn't play flashy, it's that he can do that w/o sounding boring. Just like a narrator can keep you engaged in a documentary and another can bore you to death, reading exactly the same words. Yes you can write compelling stories and/or use intriguing language, but that's not what I'm talking about. You know, there are people that - by the quality of their voice and their reading - can recite a phonebook and keep you engaged. It's not easy at all to cover David. You can play the same notes, and crazy bends aside, that's not hard from a technical point of view. There are very good covers of Comfortably Numb on YT, they are precise and accurate. They just don't compel me listening again and again like David does (and he does that consistently - both in other performances of the same song and in other songs).

The Ufo club sessions with Pinky Syd where state of the art of London undergroundx quadrophonic Sound and psychedelic light animations circelling around the Club walls... People tripped to these effects like beeing on drugs... The cn solo of Dave is like -you know life is a mess, but you still have the lightning thunder of hope-, these emotional gates leaving the suffering needs the right choice when you really know and feel it that there is a higher truth then drama of personal life, symbolised by the opening flower of light life❣️

Sadly, Richard Wright has passed away, so a full reunion isn’t possible.
