my friend's dad had the the greatest hits (Echoes) album, stumbled across it at his house when I was 13, and begged to borrow it.. listened to Pink floyd every morning before school, and every week since for 18 years now.. I don't have anything against easygoing love songs, and dislike music elitism, but pink floyd is like the soundtrack of life, always relevant

During my extended periods of drug use this was the song I always chose to get high to. Now I'm 8 months sober and this song still hits me the same way it did then, maybe even a little more. It brings such an overwhelming comfort that sometimes brings me to tears. These two songs and alot of other Floyd songs have that crazy power. I love Pink Floyd.

It was not really psychedelic, not as PF was before this album and especially when Sid Barett was around but freaking more different than The Eagles stuff in the early '70. Thanks to Alan Parson's absolute genius, this album is the proof that well done things can be at the top even if it is not "à la mode"

The woman's voice throughout the album is so intensely expressive, though she never utters a single word. You can feel the prickling, stinging emotional energy. Her name is Clare Torry.

The screams at the beginning of the song always does something to me, its like how much pain and tragedy and trauma a person can go through, Pink Floyd knows how to paint that picture because they lived through that era of post war trauma passed down to the children, so much pain and agony in their music like a screaming child in the middle of a bomb raid his house and family and community destroyed, this song and Metallica the unforgiven paint that picture 😔

Saw these guys in '73 or '74, can't remember. Anyway it was mind blowing to me, I can't "trip" down memory lane anymore but support and envy those that can. It's kinda funny how I never understood what the elderly generation meant about feeling young until I entered their (my?) world. If my body would just cooperate I would have it made. Doug , it is simply not true that it takes 3 singers to do this live. A simple youtube search will yield several live versions with Pink Floyd and only one singer . They did use 3 before but not because only Claire could do it solo. Claire is the best though. Also , not just one take : " She performed two complete takes, the second one more emotional than the first. David Gilmour asked for a third take, but halfway through Torry stopped, feeling she was getting repetitive and had already done the best she could. The final album track was assembled from all three takes.

Clare Torry's vocals in "The Great Gig in the Sky" along with the piano accompaniment are quite beautiful and moving.

This brings back memories of standing outside under the summer sky drinking beer passing joints and just having a beautiful time… God I miss those beautiful people and the fun we had. A few have passed on (god rest their souls ) enjoy ur life take time and I hope u (who ever is reading this) make amazing memories ☮️peace and love ❤️

gus, i identify with your comment and thank you for it. there is an element of life especially when looking at it through the lense of the sonics of this song that seam bleak and empty, amazing and powerful piece of music, but i dont espouse that existence is a free fall into nothingness, plato and socrates would disagree, i believe in christ and a resurrection and judgement on the last day, life eternal, an eternal look at the face of God.

Pink Floyd is the band that keeps me calm after a stressful day at work.

Did you know the solo this woman does.....they had no idea who she was, they told her to just "feel it" and sing what she felt. It was totally adlibed! They couldn't believe it when she was done! She actually blew their minds! So cool to learn history of songs....

I remember growing up on the rez . Hearing all the grown ups getting drunk with this playing as loud as possible. Hearing people remanessing past times , others yelling about today. And some crying , others arguing . Man those were some different times. But in a way I miss those days . Many many great moments watching family members get wasted without a care in the world. Many of whom are gone now. I'll miss you all. Thanks for the memories. Love you all. R.I.P.

Fantastic. Meant to listen with eyes closed. I read somewhere that the female singer was told to sing like she wanted. however she surprised herself with her own intensity and thought she was going to be fired after she let loose.

Although I prefer songs from other Pink Floyd albums, and that as a concept The Wall is better, I have to admit this one is the best. The transition to songs, the intro and outro to this album, everything... The whole album is just one hell of a trip.

A masterwork. When artists come together and create something timeless.

I’ve never heard anything like this before. Listening, thinking about life. Don’t know how long I’ll be around, so I’ll just try and find what’s good for me.

I can feel this entire song. Every string touch and instrument coming together as one big beautiful experience that is so much deeper than just the sound.

Clare Torry, is unfounded. Brilliant, and timeless.

At the age of 14th I started to listen pink floyd because my youngest brothers loved their music, now i have 38 years old and i am still love every peace of their songs. This is real and fantastic music.

Even the the whole album just consisted of this one track as a whole it would still be the greatest album of all time. They leave me speechless every time I listen to them. I discovered them very young and at a very cold and some what difficult time in my life. Sometimes I think they were the only reason I hung in there when I was in the 7th grade. They will forever go down as my favorite band I’ve ever listened to

there is no need for an outside substance to feel the immense feelings you achieve from listening to this masterpiece. I could feel as high as a kite listening to this with no mary jane what so ever.

This is the chill-out song I need after a hard week of work

The absolute best way to listen to this album is wearing a good set of headphones laying outside somewhere quiet in thick cushy grass with a good, low buzz on.

I discovered this album in 1988. I was a young teenager and my father was restoring VW Bugs in his spare time. He bought one from a female University student who had just graduated and was moving back home. She left some things in the car and was meant to return for them but never did. Included DSOTM cassette. As I rummaged through her stuff (some keys with a leather Fob, some cassettes, random junk) months later, the scent of her perfume still hung on her possessions and somehow compelled my lovestruck teenage boy's mind (I had never even seen her) to play his strange and unknown tape. Needless to say, I was blown away. Thanks unknown and sweet smelling older student girl, I still sometimes think of you when listening and wonder where you are.

As per my parents... I was conceived to Pink Floyd, went to a concert (Animals) whilst in my mum's belly and listened to it throughout all my childhood. I don't know life without Pink Floyd. I feel pretty lucky

I first heard this song watching my grandma's house for the week. I was crossfaded and stumbled upon these two masterpieces. The Great Gig in the Sky made me Feel Feelings I had never felt before. Truly an amazing experience and would definitely 100% relive it again if I could.

it's kind of strange my birthday is 9 15 66 and Richard Wright??? and im now dying with cancer i hope i see him on the other side I've always been a huge fan all the way back to Barrett and after him i admire "pinky" Floyd" the both were great but NOBODY tops MR.
