Been to both places, Kolkata is way, way worse compared to Bangladesh, it doesn't even come close, Kolkata is an absolute literal shithole. West Bengal is one of the poorest states in India, just after Bihar.

Which part of India is any better than this ? No. Even the Muslims are from eastern UP & Bihar. There is too much destitution in these 2 areas of the country. Their first instinct is survival and Kolkata is the nearest. As for Bangladeshis & Rohingyas even the corrupt BSF (also manned largely by people from North Indian "Hindi speaking" states) has to keep themselves in check. They may also have unofficial instructions to let the Hindus come but others also slip through. All the Bangladeshis around my house are Hindus and I am yet to meet a Rohingya. While Hindus are discriminated against Bangladeshi Muslims do not need to come when they are doing well on economic and social indices compared to India as a whole and certainly our Northern states. Also if you are an Indian you should be able to judge the broad region a person is from by the accent he/she speaks Hindi/English.

No, they didn't. The British ruled some parts of India from 1858 to 1947. Before that East India Company ruled some parts of India from 1865 to 1858. British had some influence in the court of Mir Jaafar (and Mir Qassim) from 1757 to 1764.
