the thing is Pilots sometimes chase Orcas away, when stopping, Orcas chase them and so on. It is mostly a huge Pilot group who chases a small group of Orcas. You can find Videos Orcas killing lonesome Pilot. Think it is something like Waterbuffalos chasing a lion pride...they are a threat but also prey. And in most regions Orcas and Pilots are not fighting for food, thats a false information too.

A bit more research and this is clearly a bit of over-hype. For example the prey list of both species is largely different. The pilot whales DO NOT 'give Orcas the shivers'.

A pity, perhaps. If Orcas and the like knew how vile WE were, they'd be attacking us to pull out OUR liver. After all, we are killing their world, as well as our own, and murder them anyway, as we do all animals, but Orcas are actually as stupid as all animals and don't KNOW we do this, so not clever anyway, but then, neither are we, cos we can't live without the planet we are killing every day. Ha! Losers!

Pilot whales are slaughtered annually as they pass through the Faroes Islands on their migratory route. The islanders corner them in a bay, stick hooks in their bodies to prevent them from escaping and kill them with machete blows. The bay turns red with blood. The islands belong to Denmark, which protects the massacre with its navy. The killing is done for fun as they do not need the meat as they live off industrial fishing. Pilot whales move in families, fathers, mothers, children and nephews.

It should be noted; Pilot whales are the second loudest species on earth, with their vocal range reaching up to 240khz. This may have something to do with the orcas avoiding them. Loud sounds can disorient an orca. It's believed that a sperm whale, being able to achieve sounds of up to 270khz, can actually paralyze an orca if the sound wave hits them directly multiple times. This may be the case with Pilot whales, too.

  • @Mari-co3xi

    @Mari-co3xi

Agree. The only reason Orcas stay away from sperm whales is because of the loud sound they make. Not because they are scared of them hunting them.

Thanks for sharing 😊 that was very knowledgeable. I had no clue that these whales were so loud. Very intelligent creatures. We take them for granted by capturing and slaughtering them or selling them to aquariums like SeaWorld. I understand if the whales Injured or in need of our assistance but to capture them for the parks pretending to use them as knowledge for the public when they leave all of these parts out when your dining with shamu. Just saying the public almost caused SeaWorld to go bankrupt after the attack from a killer whale. Made promises to drop there breeding program yet another orca got pregnant after this bill was signed and supposedly they mated through the gates since a male orcas private parts reach the length of 13 feet. But that was bs and people still support them. Smh. Hope I shared something knowledgeable as well. Save our whales and marine life!

240kHz is not a measure of their loudness, it is a frequency that we would call ultrasonic. maybe they can see your insides :D loudness is measured in decibels (dB) and anything above 100dB is painful to humans.

i once had the experience of snorkeling with a pod of pilot whales in mid ocean, We were on a dive boat between Florida and the Bahamas when the dive master announced we were surrounded by a pod of pilot whales He stopped the boat and offered us the opportunity join the whales .The water was flat calm and crystal clear. We jumped in and were surrounded on all sides with adults and babies alike. they took little notice of us and seemed content to keep milling about the dive boat. Although it was over 30 years ago, I can still close my eyes and replay those images in my mind today.

Without scuba I kayacked out to a moving heard of these off Malibu in the early 70's and with just mask and snorkel I dove down roughly into the middle of their midst. I was astonished at how big they all were. A trio of smaller ones came near me as I treaded water in water so deep I could not see the bottom. I heard their whistles and felt their calls ripple through me sonicly. It was an experience I'll never forget. There had to be a few dozen and they were moving north. It was a hard paddle to catch up to them. The water was crystal clear and I could see many from my viewpoint. I was Alone at the time ~ I always tried to share this experience but it's just hard to imagine. EPIC !!!

I was anchored with my sailboat on the BAJA side of the sea of Cortez near Loreto. I saw what looked like a pod of dolphins approaching us. I got my 2 grand kids up to see them. As they got closer, I realized that they looked too big. Hey! Those aren’t dolphins, they’re PILOT WHALES! Wow. My grand kids and I quickly jumped in my 12’ rigid inflatable dingy and took of with the pod. I had to be on a plane to keep up with them. They were doing 8-10 kts with no effort. We followed with them for about a quarter mile. Unlike dolphins that will often play with you when you do this, they completely ignored us. An amazing experience. Very interesting video, you don’t hear much about Pilot Whales. Thanks. PS. The Sea of Cortez, Mexico is an amazing place for whale and dolphin experiences. We had a giant Blue Whale come right up to us while we were sailing along. He paralleled us for about half a mile so close that his pectoral fin rubbed the hull a little. He was at least 80 feet! Nearly twice the length of our 46’ sailboat. Yeah, another amazing Sea of Cortez experience. And I could go on. Capt Fred.

We saw pods of dolphins every day and it was a real treat to see pilot whales about every other day.😊Of my many trips to the beach since the 1980s I haven't seen a pilot whale since. By the way pilot whales are actually terrible "pilots" and they beach themselves way more often than any other species.

Im surprised by a lot of this info. Ive heard of polot whales washing ashore and hearing it was killed by an orca. I can see how an individual could be targeted for food and vice versa if an entire pod came by a solo orca they could likely kill it. I could also see a large pilot pod being aggressive or territorial to an orca pod if there were babies in the pod or they were feeding. That's really interesting to hear an orca raising a pilot whale, theyre known to have string motherly instincts even after theyre young grow into maturity, but never heard that theyll raise another species

We were snorkelling on the Great Barrier reef a few years back when a pod of pilot whales arrived. On first sight of those dorsal fins we thought they were huge sharks and got out of the water fast. Once we realised they were pilot whales we jumped back in to watch them. We had absolutely no idea they might be dangerous. Unfortunately (or fortunately) by the time we got back in they were moving away from us, and too far off to see clearly.

Orcas that eat sea mammals would probably not be as intimidated as those that primarily eat fish. I am not convinced that Orcas in general are scared of Pilot whales. A large group however could threaten a small pod of Orca. Not with being harmed so much as being harassed to the point of driving them away.

Pilot Whales drive off Orcas, and Sperm Whales (the individually most powerful apex predators) actually fuck them up (as well as many species of great whales such as Humpbacks). Only humans with current technology generally lack something to worry about in terms of conflict with other species.

Once I was trying to catch fish in Florida in a pass/inlet and there was a huge school of mullet around. Bottle nosed dolphins showed up and herded the mullet together and attacked. Then something bigger showed up and took over. They must have been pilot whales or maybe false killer whales, I don't know which. But they were bigger than the dolphins by quite a bit, and dark. It was fascinating to see. I grew up fishin' in that area and spent a crazy amount of time around the bay and beaches of Sarasota. That's the only time I ever saw those animals, whatever they were. Another time in Costa Rica I saw something very similar, dolphins feeding and something bigger and darker showed up. Both times they were a little too far away for a good look. In Costa Rica I was on the Pacific Coast, so it probably wasn't the same kind both times.

There had been Orca in the area the previous two days and we were out in search of them and all the tour boats were in contact with one another on their radios and no one could find the Orcas but one of the guides located a large pod of Pilot Whales, so now I am wondering if that is why the Orcas were gone. Never would have thought that would be an issue.

As I understand it, during the era of whaling, Pilot whales were almost wiped out. Could it be that the depletion of the Pilots opened a spot atop the apex currently occupied by the Orcas - and since the Pilots are making a comeback (even absent an accurate count) perhaps this explains the unusually cautious behavior in a species better known for being amongst nature's most dramatic "show offs"? Wonderful video G

Frankly I love whales but i watch this thinking the best way to see a whale (or the best emotional response) is by fluke. years ago I was living in the Pilbara region of WA and at the end of one of the really long wharves up there. Whales had become endangered and one hadn't been seen for decades. as i stood there watching the expanse of the ocean i saw something on the horizon and it was coming toward me. at that time i had no concept it was a whale. I stood there and continued to watch it and it went basically directly underneath me (and the wharf) and then kept on swimming. no one was there with me at the time and no one believed me. About five years later my dad saw one and then he believed me. Their numbers are greater now, but i can honestly say it was a magnificent and unexpected and even magical experience.

This video showcases the astonishing agility of pilot whales, who prove they are the 'cheetahs of the deep.' Even killer whales, known for their prowess, hesitate when encountering these oceanic acrobats. Witnessing these majestic creatures in their element is truly awe-inspiring. It's a testament to the extraordinary world beneath the waves. ðŸ‹ðŸŒŠ Hit like if you're as fascinated by marine life as I am! 🌟

To be honest, I don't understand why they are called cheetahs. The mako shark looks like a cheetah of the sea - it is a loner, very slender and light, mobile, is an active predator and develops speeds up to 120-130 km/ h.

@@ibrahimsultanov7355this is the one time i agree with you, pilot whales cant even catch orcas in a sprint or reach them, and cheetahs dont have huge numbers. Cheetah of the sea would be mako like you said, smaller but much faster and very agile

The Orca's are the - Lion's of the sea (Powerful hunters in a pride) & the Pilot Whales are either - Hyena's of the sea (Large clan) or Wolves of the sea (Pack hunters) Their jaws are powerful & their heads are powerful battering rams 🔥

true, Cheetah is indefense quick runner but not a thread to bigger cats not even in groups against one Lion....I also dont understand this comparing. And yes...huge groups of Pilots defend themselfes against little Orca group but sometimes it is filmed how Orcas feed on Pilot.... Maybe Pilot groups are like big herd of waterbuffalo chasing lion pride.....
