Orca Vs Huge Sea Lion on the Drone!

The epic contest of a huge male Steller Sea Lion fighting for its life and a pod of hungry Transient Orca intent on making him their meal! Filmed both from the boat and the drone, this desperate battle for survival went on for hours, a highly unusual event for Orca, who are usually able to kill and eat their prey in a matter of minutes. But this Sea Lion was not going down without a fight! Watch as he boldly fends them off again and again, watching for the orca to stray too close so he can tear into them! It was to no avail though, in spite of his strength and skill he was no match for the sophisticated team strategies of the Orca.
Filmed in Icy Strait Alaska, by Capt Josh of Alaska Whale and Drone Tours while on a tour.

    While working as a commercial fisherman in Alaska I have seen many great battles in the sea. I have seen a big group of sea lions chase a pod of orcas away from pups that were in a deep pool. I wish I had a drone at the time to record them. The perspective of the drone really paints a picture of how brutal it can be. From the boat, you don't really have any idea what is going on other than what happens on the surface. This was unreal to see. A true warrior was shared with the world. Incredible. Thank you. RIP Sea Lion!

    Sperm whales have no problem seeing off Orcas and they hunt giant squid so I don’t think the Orcas are the most lethal. If you count in some of the baleen whales like Blue whales they can also outrun orcas and eat tonnes of tiny seafood a day so maybe they’re the most lethal.

    I live in and was born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska. Nature is sometimes sad, and always unforgiving. I am also half Athabascan Indian from a village called Chitina in the Copper River valley about 250 miles outside Anchorage through the mountain ranges and immense forests. My mother(RIP. She died last year.) was the President of the Chitina board for many years and I have traveled back and forth from Chitina and the Copper river for as long as I can remember. I have seen some very strange things out in Chitina. Things that you wouldn't believe unless your own eyes saw them. I didn't believe in these..legends either until the mother of my son and I had an amazing encounter right on the Copper river bridge in Chitina about 25 years ago. Over 2,000 people vanish forever in Alaska, and considering our population, thats 1 in ever 300 of us that go out into Alaska, and are never seen again. Alaska is a beautiful place...But a dangerous place.

    I didn't realize until recently that a sea lion was among some of the most formidable Apex predators. They honestly terrify me, lol. I wish he would've hid on the boat (like some do). I absolutely understand that everything has to eat. He had to know as he hid against the boat his day was up. Everyone is right, a warrior spirit, definitely wouldn't want to bump into him on a dive. He decided if hes going, hes not going w out a fight. That's a good meal, feeds the whole pod. Fly free warrior lion!! Bless all Gods beautiful creations ❤

    These overhead drone shots really provide perspective to how the orcas coordinate their ramming. Seems like its the females which does most of the actual hitting. Maybe because they are a little smaller than the males and thus are more maneuverable and can turn quicker and faster. In that aspect, they remind me of lion prides where lioness do must of the hunting. Although unlike lion prides which is often lead by a dominant male, orcas are led by the females, if I am not mistaken.

    They really do! What I found most interesting was how CAREFUL the Orca were with their assault on the Sea Lion. How many passes did they make on it that they bailed on and dodged out of the way for every one that hit? That Sea Lion was quite the fighter! Yes, the Orca pods are Matriarchal. All the females in a pod will usually be related to each other; Mother/daughter/cousin/grandmother, etc. The males will also hang out in their mother pods, but they'll go to other pods to mate, and then usually come back after.

  • @ArchTeryx00
    @ArchTeryx002 ай бұрын

    Watching the orcas hunt is always fascinating to me. You can see the technique the pod uses with large, dangerous prey = a Stellar's Sea Lion could easily kill one of *them.* They try to keep the sea lion confused then blindside it with a charge. Also note they will NOT try to hit the sea lion with a downstroke of the flukes - they try to hit it with the *upstroke,* which is far stronger but far trickier. Flinging seals around is easy. Dealing with a sea lion that could take your flukes right off - and doom you to slow, horrible death - is a whole other hunt. This was either a very bold, or very desperate pod, to take on something as dangerous as that sea lion. Enough meat for everyone if they succeed... but HUGE risk and HUGE energy burn to wear it down. At least they were smart enough to let injuries start to sink in and conserve some energy. But you want to talk about super-persistent predators - they understood sunk costs and simply would not give up until that animal was dead. Doubt they got enough calories out of it to make the hunt worth it, but... they got their prey. Wolves of the sea indeed.

    Not sure why the Sea Lion didn't keep heading to shallower water and the shore during the hours long battle.

    I think he was too scared of turning his back on them to run. They had him psyched out, popping up around him from all sides and attacking from every direction. Either that or maybe because he was such a big, strong animal, and he hadn't faced something he couldn't defend himself against in such a long time, his fight instinct was stronger than his flight instinct. Maybe he thought he could chase them off, but then after he started getting hurt, he couldn't run away anymore.

    I'd love to see their patterns of movements on radar. I could be wrong but they don't seem random. It looks like some move to distract it while another comes in at high volecity to hit it? I mean they never seem to collide with one another which would be just as dangerious.

    I would've expected the sea lion to flee into a shallow water in such situation, or even GTFO of the water and wait for the orcas to F off...?
