Pilot Training Next Program | New Method for Pilot Training | United States Air Force
Pilot Training Next (PTN) is an experimental program under the “Learning Next” umbrella with a focus on understanding how Airmen learn, as well as exploring and potentially prototyping a flying training environment that integrates various technologies to produce pilots in an accelerated-and learning-focused manner.

In the past T-37’s were used for primary pilot training. T-37 were tandem seat jet trainers. Next phase was in T-38’s. Now after T-6 Texan phase pilots either go to a T-38 or passenger type jet.

I'm not much of a confident one either. Could you run me through the basics of what its like? Anyways I know by the time I can enlist some stuff might change. I play DCS. It is also VR and I also have the exact same HOTAS, the Thrustmaster Warthog. The F-16 module for DCS is releasing this September and it is going to be completely clickable which means that the inside of the cockpit works just like the real F-16 (besides things such as IFF which is still classified). I'm very excited because this means that if I do get accepted into Pilot Training in a few years, I should be ahead of the rest of the class. There are a few real F-16 pilots that I fly with in the game that are going to teach me how to navigate the cockpit and work the avionics.

NONE of the airman I personally served with could graduate training...even in the late 70's. Our Officers are officers because they achieved the necessary technical training in colleges or the Academy to be able to master the high tech demands of piloting these aircraft. They earned the right; a high school graduate from schmucky-dern , gruntville usa has not. I was enlisted so I know, and spent 4 years on the flight line. My opinion.

Pilot shortage. Bring back the Aviation Cadet Corps. Army, Navy, and Air Force used Aviation Cadet programs from WWI through the mid 1960's to train and commission pilots and navigators (combat systems officers in today's world). Total immersion 24 hours a day, seven days a week, flight training and a cadet structure for military training. In the late 1950's AF requirements were two years college, high physical standards, and successfully pass several screening exams. The screening exams were to determine suitability and used to decide if you were going to be a pilot or navigator. Cadets entered service as an Aviation Cadet, were paid at E5 rate plus flight pay once they began flight training. Three months preflight school at Lackland AFB which was all military training (drill, leadership, firearms, lots of PT). That was followed by twelve months of flight training. Upon successful completion commissioned as a second lieutenant and received flight wings. Date of commissioning was backdated to date entered service as a cadet. Good record and promoted to first lieutenant in six months. That resulted in some second lieutenants who were not old enough to buy a beer outside the officer's club :)
