A cool-headed amateur pilot successfully completed an emergency landing with his family onboard after a major technical issue.
Though Devin Miller, 33, works in consumer marketing in Texas, his hobby and passion is flying planes.
While flying wife Melanie and their two young children from Atlanta to Houston on September 1, Devin planned to land at their scheduled fuel stop in Mississippi.
However, when Devin began to slow the plane and line up the approach to land, to his shock and horror he realised the performance of the controls were not responding to his inputs.

Stuck throttle at least at some level allowing level flight or slight climb is better than no throttle and you are coming down within glide range wherever you are. Being able to arc around the field and troubleshoot is a doable situation. Stressful as hell though but at least you can work the issue. Having the family on board sucks.

20 years ago I experienced a similar emergency in my 182 Cessna. The throttle cable became separated from the carburetor and remained in the full open position. I was literally holding the throttle in my hand when my wife asked if there was a problem. I replied, no honey no problem at all, I’ll just use the other throttle. She said ok and went back to her reading. I retarded the mixture and signed off with flight following. I started my descent into Banning airport and manipulated the mixture throughout the approach and landing. No big deal 😊

Customer lost his throttle in flight, cable came off the carb. Scary stuff! Congrats on skills!
Shame to see so much incorrect information tossed around as fact. I've had this happen on my single engine airplane. It certainly is surprising and makes you think a bit. Perhaps being an engineer made it more obvious to me at the time: it is simple to reduce power without a throttle... just pull the mixture. The engine keeps turning because the prop is windmilling, but the engine stops producing power. If you want a bit more power, add a bit more fuel. The engine will pop and sputter a bit, or at least mine did. I clearly remember flying over a church on final that Sunday morning, feeling bad about the racket I was making over their service. The engine is very controllable this way. I even taxied up onto the ramp by continuing to control mixture. The propeller is very heavy and acts like a flywheel, keeping the engine turning as you add and remove fuel manually. I called the 'after hours' number on the door of the FBO, they had the bolt and hardware I needed (at no charge no less!) and I continued the trip. Nice folks there. I'm sure this event was stressful for those on board, but they got to the right answer. I'm sure that once the pilot tried it he found as I did that it quickly becomes natural to use the mixture, so as the aviation saying goes, "the safe execution of the maneuver was never seriously in doubt." Always nice when that works out.

Hmm. I've owned literally hundreds of cars, boats. Hot rods, tractors, motorcycles etc....and I've never had a throttle cable break. Why is it common on airplanes? Lol. Shouldn't be that difficult to design a throttle that can't break, or at least some type of back up system.

@@MrCoffeekelly Apparently, you’ve never owned a VW T2.
Was fortunate throttle stuck at 25 inches, enough power to climb and have options. My throttle cable broke, 16 inches (15%) in IFR descent to intercept ILS. Zero option. Praise to this Pilot for taking the time to fly and problem solve, no panic and no in flight screw ups.

Good video content to share with other GA enthusiasts. Background music detracts from the delivery, but scope of video is beneficial. Thanks for sharing.
Excellent pilot for keeping his cool. Emergencies don’t kill people, panic does.

Meh, sometimes emergencies kill people. Not all emergencies are created equal.
Lady seems on it- handling multiple issues calmly like a boss! Even helping the pilot with frequencies or similar. 8:00! Luck guy and lucky child - my ex was like that. I know that elated "made it to the ground' feeling that they showed at the end..
