Brilliant video explaining to people new to the sport in simple terms how things work. There isn't much out there to help new starters, a lot of these beginner guides out there require you to already know the basics. Cant wait for part 2

Great video .my dad was in this great sport for 40 years after I was given a white racing pigeon. That's how we started. My dad dad became the secretary of the club worked very hard .there were 60 members alll sorts of people different ages .in stone Staffordshire. But over years it got less and .less in 2021 it finished. . I realy think if there was sponsorship to cover costs and and for the top 10 players in the races .it would help the sport .Great video and your inthusisam is really good .it will hopefully help new people come to the sport..my dad's best race .1st from saints only 3 birds on the day very bad weather .4 year cock injured hi wottle completely ripped open and 3inch cut on his back my dad's mate stitched him up and made a complete recovery 34 mins infront of the other 2 bird s ..good memories .hopefully more people will start and maybe more clubs start . .keep up with your videos they are really good

I got cancer 1.5 year ago and I had enough time to do whatever I start watching pigeons video and now I love them but I had many problem. I am from India and we don't have enough racing pigeon in India Anybody who is selling them are too much expensive and In my state I think nobody have racing pigeon now. And I am poor I can't buy them so I am happy by watching them 😊

Fantastic videos mate you are right it's hard on your own but when you get them coming it's a fantastic feeling I also started this year with the young birds and had birds gifted by local flyers keep up the great work.

What a great video Dan!!! Very informative. You hit on all the points needed to be covered. You talked about the genuine good nature and giving the people in this sport are too. I’m in this sport just over one year and I’ve yet to pay for a bird. I’ve been loaned quality breeding stock and my mentors are just the best. great advise i enjoy your videos i live in massachusetts usa but from Ireland i built my loft and got birds from a few flyers the club fees are nearly $1000 a yr here plus i need to buy a clock i need to build or buy a loft for stock birds or old birds before i get my teeth into racing but i really enjoy handling and training the birds

@@howtotrainyourpigeon I think the reason is because there aren’t a lot of flyers and they need to pay more money to keep the clubhouse open plus pay the driver to bring the birds to the liberation I don’t actually think you win any money

@howtotrainyourpigeon We have been sending 400/500 a race so far and have really had good returns so far. I’ll ask at the club what birdage the last few years as it’s my first year racing. The theory is the peregrines are no longer raising young so aren’t as much of an issue as earlier in the year. The only issue is the moult

Are you having troubles with hawks or falcons?

Can you fly pigeons just for fun or does it need to be in a race or for preparation to race ? I live in a remote area and have no racing clubs anywhere near me but I am very interested in flying them either way. Just want as much info before I start up

Sure you can do it for fun. If you want to race you can always enter the youngsters you breed into a good, well run and reputable one loft race

I have so much trouble because my young birds are too eagerly flying out when feeding and strong on wing because they are 2 months old. Then a hawk scares them and they fly around for 2 or 3 days. How do I get past this step. I know I should have started younger 😅 but now I have to deal with the situation. The hawk problem is why I didn't let them out younger. This hawk knows my schedule lol. It hasn't caught any, but that doesn't stop it from trying

Hi DAN, Can you tell us in you're next video what you're plans are for this coming season please??, IE: loft final plans if you have finally decided to buy or build??. And young birds?, How many do you plan on buying to fit your new loft size with out over loading the sections?, As I've mentioned before if you have two perches per bird they will be happy and content, and seems yearlings are never to reliable breeding and rearing wise due to inexperience god only knows how many you will breed yourself??. And being friended birds is a lottery, how many will you get and when 🙄. Some lads will pair up early or mid December with stock birds, because there experienced and have lights and even heating in there stock loft. You say you're undecided as such weather to buy stock bird's or not, if you buy 6-8-10 young birds off different "PROVEN" fanciers and they fly well for you well that's generally where you go back and "TRY" buy stock from, or buy a certain amount from them as youngsters and stock them as baby's, big aviary on the side of the stock section, and the chill sun bath there and never get out, them along out with the ones that flew for you and won or did well getting placed being consistent, they should be also stocked and bread from, buying stock birds and building a stock team doesn't happen over night, it generally takes years, unless you have thousands to spair yo go buy a whole stock team. I no guys that just buy young birds every year and breed from there old widow hood team and don't keep any stock birds at all, all depends on you're situation, if you have a partnership with a friend or family member, it obviously lightens the load. If you do have you're loft built in January I'm hoping you have you're first round in mid to late January early February at latest, and the second round a month later and so on, I suggested you split you're young birds up last season especially the late ones you got and keep them for the second half of the season, as the early ones started to drop off and bring in these as a B team, but u kept them you rushed the youngest, you lost them they got sick all because they where 2 young and immature, but as I told you last season it's all about mistakes and learning from them, in 30 years time u will be still learning, it's 1 of them sports. Loft direction, is a bit of a funny topic, in Dublin lads believed it should face east, my loft was south east, as that's the direction my parents house faced, but it was also directly in the line of flight for all races unless we had a rare north west wind and the birds came in from the coast unlike all other winds the came generally inland, the fastest way as the crow flies. Sorry about going on as usual, but like always I'm like a child waiting on Santa to come, 2 see what you're plans are on you're new loft or loft build, and you're plans on buying in new baby's to race. PS: you said in you're last video you had untill march to decide witch you don't, as you can't be building a loft or getting one built while you're training or racing you're old birds, they will make strange, won't trap fast, and generally uneasy. Don't get me wrong, I've seen it done, but I highly recommend any1 not to do this, very bad idea, looking forward to your reply and plans. Yours in sport DES

Hey Des, did you have any issues with planning permission? Fingal Co Co recently told me I’d be wasting my money lodging a loft application as it’s most likely to be rejected.

@@stephenm8797 I haven't race in nearly 15 years, was no planning permission needed back then or the nearly 20 years I raced. This is obviously something new, and I'm blown away you need such a ting as planning permission, people just built a loft and No1 cared bar an odd neighbor not being happy, but lads still kept there loft, only time I seen any problems was when lads built a double decker loft and dident ask the neighbors was it ok, and rarely was that a problem, heard 1 or 2 stories about an odd neighbor saying 2 high you're going 2 be looking into my garden or to close to the house and a view into a bedroom kinda ting, must read up about this madness. I think it be no harm 2 apply and see what is said, all you can be told is no at worse. I assume you are in a council house and that is the biggest problem bar a neighbor u don't get on with?

Go for it mate. Best sport for a young person. I started racing pigeons when I was around 9 and raced until I was 20. Wished I kept going, but 51 years on I'm looking to get back into the sport. I raced with my dad and had some great results including position in the combines. Good luck!!

So many pigeons die during the Race...it is a disgusting Cruelty to these wonderful Birds, who have a lifelong Partnership to seperate them. ..to take them away from there Home... Lost Pigeons gather in the cities, called a plague and are often killed 😢😢😢😢😢😢 Why don't You care for those Thousands of Lost Pigeons instead of breeding and sending them to fatal races ?

Some might die, but not through cruelty. They're more likely to be killed by hawks and falcons, or hit man made structures like power lines. This is true of all birds, not just racing pigeons. If anything, racing pigeons are protected from predators for 95% of their lives. They're treated for parasites and illnesses that kill so many wild bird species and they never experience starvation as they're always fed so well. They're let out for daily exercise, just like your dog and cat, and always choose to come home afterwards. They return from races because they want to. They return faster because of sex, and that's not for a life long partnership, they don't care who it's with (it's a misconception that pigeons are monogamous). They're so well looked after that they easily live over 10 years (unless they suffer the aforementioned). You can try to take care of the birds from the towns (strays) but you would have to keep them imprisoned because as soon as you let them out to fly they would go straight back to the town (they're homing pigeons after all). I spent a great deal of time contemplating the ethics of the sport before I started because of the now clearly unjust reputation it had from the past. Things have moved on and most fanciers take better care of their birds than themselves, often driving hundreds of miles or paying lots of money to couriers to collect birds that have been reported lost. Most racing pigeons have a great life. They're housed, fed, free healthcare, protected from predators when at home, allowed real freedom to go wherever they want (no dog leads, walking parks, horse reins, play centres, playgrounds, race courses etc) they literally have all the freedom they want, which is incidentally when they're most vulnerable and likely to die.

@@UllaLara okay so I think we'd need to agree on the definition of 'cruel' to make any progress. Dogs don't have homing instincts or abilities like homing pigeons do, so yes if you 'dumped' your dog hundreds of miles away that would be cruel and not really comparable. I was referring to pigeons being able to choose whether they come back from exercise. Dogs, horses, gerbils, parrots or most other pets are kept imprisoned. Isn't that cruel? Racing pigeons have the life of Riley compared to most animals, captive or wild. Flights of pigeons have been tracked using GPS rings. On analysis the flocks will fly 50-60 miles a day on their excerise. It doesn't matter to them if they are 100, 200 or 600 miles from home. They find their way as easily as you do driving from one city to another using your GPS. That's why they're unique. Don't ignore my previous comment on stray town pigeons. They're there because they choose to be and if you take them away to 'look after them' they will fly straight back to the town, they're homing pigeons after all.

I have "feral" city pigeons and former racing pigeons, most of them do have a lifelong parnership and bond very closely once they have found a partner e.g. a wonderful white pigeon together with a blind feral pigeon . But not all are handicapped and most of them could easily fly back when they have recovered, but they stay...because they have found a home, their gang :) or their partner...they come injured, sick, broken...and stay...unless they have a partner in the city ...but to be honest there are more male pigeons found, i think due to the complications of the bred in brooding and laying eggs up to six times a year...they have inflammations, calcium deficiency they fight for their lifes outside in the Streets...when the breeders are too old and has abandoned them... there are so many pigeons out there in the streets...but still people breed more and more for fun..for a hobby...and breeding always means selection, as we all know, they are not only killed by hawks, or in an accident, but also by the breeders, if the pigeon does not perform the results as expected or does have any disability...it is one of the cruelest hobbies, if you look behind the scenes

Dan, I wouldn't waste you're time talking to this person who won't even use there real name. Clueless, deluded, uses politically incorrect words like Handicaped, if such bird even exists, being blind =special needs. Needs to be shown to it's food and water and perch, this person probably has it locked in a wire front box because of it being blind, which is cruel, because if it's not in its box other birds sense it's weakness and would pick the head off it and try kill it again cruel. Pigeon should be utinized, as it has a poor quality of life being blind. I could go on and on but what's the point talking to someone who is taking serious amounts of deludimol , and is totally and utterly clueless about pigeon racing and pigeons in general.

No you don't 'have' to ask. I would just make sure it doesn't interfere with them. I told my neighbours I was putting up a shed and aviary for some birds. No need to be specific. Don't get too many to start with and you'll probably find they actually quite like watching them fly in the spring/summer. But before all of that, join your local club for sure
