The Piedras Blancas elephant seal rookery spreads over 6 miles of shoreline around Point Piedras Blancas on the central coast of California. The viewing areas are located 90 miles south of Monterey, 5 miles north of Hearst Castle State Historical Monument in San Simeon, 1.5 miles south of Point Piedras Blancas. The viewing areas are open every day of the year, are wheelchair accessible, and free. No reservations required.
The northern elephant seal, Mirounga angustirostris, is an extraordinary marine mammal. It spends eight to ten months a year in the open ocean, diving 1000 to 5800 feet deep for periods of fifteen minutes to two hours, and migrating thousands of miles, twice a year, to its land-based rookery for birthing, breeding, molting, and rest. Piedras Blancas is a great place to view these remarkable creatures during their time onshore.
Filmed in February of 2016 with a Canon Rebel T4i.

Not Big Sur...It's San Simeon, Ca. Big Sur ends many miles N of there. Great Vid.

Big Sur technically starts 9 miles north of this vista point so if you count that as many miles then I guess you're right
@jimmyfleetwood1118

@@averyancell3171 Hi, If you look at Google maps, you'll find that Big Sur is actually closer to Carmel, then San Simeon. (Making it 45 + miles above San Simeon) There's Gorda, Lucia, & Posts, (and a few others) between San Simeon and Big Sur. Part of the situation is that people see "Big Sur" as a "state of mind" which they market heavily on (wanting it to be the entire Central Coast), when it's actually a place, often far from where they actually are. (Sorry, not trying to be a know it all, but I was born in the area.) Take care, J.F.
For all of you breakers this is where the centipede came from. 2:37

"I guess that's a mating call?" Oh if only that poor person knew... Elephant seals don't use mating calls. The males use their massive weight and sharp tear to pin females in place and keep them from resisting, while they force breed the in heat female. Usually the early arrivals choose patches of beach and females gather around a single male, in a set turf. But other males try to sneak in and breed, or challenge the male of the area, in a violent battle, which the winner then breeds all of the females in the turf that are in heat/go in heat while they are the dominate male, until the mating season is over, or they lose their turf to another male. Quite literally the males get as fat as possible to fight off other males, and then use their fat to lay on females and basically rape them, because they can't get away, despite trying.
