  • @omarijinaki158

Note to viewers of this tutorial you need the PLATINUM version of Movie Studio to use the track motion button. and you have to put it in Advanced Mode to be able to see the track motion button. The Advanced Mode should be an option in the Platinum version at the top left of the menu options. I'm telling you this bc i wish at least one of the dozens of tutorial videos and community forums mentioned this and I wish ONE person would have told me this. Over the years I have downloaded both the "regular" version and the "Platinum version" of Movie Studio as trials and as purchases, before settling on my preferred video editors bc there are a lot of other options, and you don't reaaaly know which you prefer until you've created a few projects in them. Actually, I use more than one video editor and it really depends on the project. In some cases the Movie Studio features are overkill. Anyway, over the years I have changed computers at least 3 times since I first started editing in Movie Studio, and honestly I never knew or paid attention to the difference between the non Platinum and Platinum version, likely because at the time I downloaded the trial I wasn't in need of the advanced features, and/or if I was it was only for a small option like Track Motion for ONE video, not a feature I was consistently using and not for multiple advanced features. More recently, I've been using the non-Platinum version splendidly, for some pretty amazing projects, where I used a lot of FX features, but clearly not the Track Motion feature, until now. Which funnily, the project I'm using the Track Motion feature on now is on a very low quality video I don't really care much about aesthetically, I just want to be able to do picture-in-picture, which REQUIRES the track motion feature to do it most effectively. So it wasn't until this project that I realized I needed to go back and find my original Serial Number for Movie Studio PLATINUM which I bought 3 years ago (and voila! It was in a confirmation email I got when I purchased), and it still worked! I will say for most projects, even very high quality videos, the Platinum version has toooo many features, If you film a video well you shouldn't need a ton of post-production features to "adjust" or "fix" it. So in some ways I still prefer the clean simplicity of the non Platinum interface. But I'm sharing this, bc I WISH someone had told me this. It would've saved me a lot of searching on forums and tutorials for such a simple answer. So simple that no one, not even Sony in their help forums and help manuals, thought to mention it.

The few dollars more you spend for the Platinum version of the program is money very well spent. My books and my web site only recommend and support Movie Studio's Platinum version.

Yep, thanks I have the Platinum version. It would be helpful if you mentioned in the title of your tutorials the specific program you provide advice for is the Platinum version. and make it clear that you're aware the features you're providing tutorials for do not exist in the non-Platinum version. The title and description of this tutorial video "Creating picture-in-picture and split screen compositions in Sony Movie Studio" mentions nothing about the Platinum version. Since it's a tutorial for the Platinum version, I think you should mention that.

Great tutorial Steve. I knew how to do the PIP but I learned something new. I never realized you could 'right click' and just drag the video, or audio, to the timeline independently Thanks for that tip! :-). I'm a little confused though why the pan & crop that you used to put Jason up in the corner of your video couldn't also be used to create the 'split screen' you did towards the end. Is there any particular reason you used the 'track motion' option instead ( pros / cons ? ).

+MrGrunthunter's Adventures Nope. You can use either. One affects only the one event, the other affects the entire track. Beyond that, just a matter of preference.

There's not a setting in the program to do that, so there's something outside the program going on. First go to the nVidia, AMD or Intel web site and ensure you have the latest drivers for your graphics card. If that doesn't do it, I'm not sure what to recommend -- but, as I say, there's no way to make the program preview your movie in black & white even if you want to (other than, of course, adding a black & white video effect to it).

Thanks, Steve, for your reply. However, I was able to fix the problem though I don't remember the details. There are 2 boxes on the main screen near the timeline that allows one to change the color of the preview box (blue, green, red ect.) It was one of the 2 boxes there that the problem was solved. I purchased your book and look forward to learning. My big hope is to learn the split screen techique. Watched your video but think the book may help too. Thanks again for your speedy response.

Hi Steve. Thank you so much for the tutorials on Sony movie Studio 13. I have two questions for you 1) When I want to insert just a video clip and the video & audio tracks both come onto the timeline, how can I delete just the audio track? 2) Am I able to enlarge the monitor in SMS 13? Once again, thank you so much for your time. This will be my first movie and I want to get it just right. Stay well.

Thanks for this very helpful tutorial! Unfortunately I cannot seem to do what I need, which is to apply a 3x4 PIP over an area of a 9x16 video. (I'm going for a sort of newscast look, with a squarish picture over the announcer's shoulder -- a widescreen shape for the overlay won't fit right.) When I try resizing the overlay this way, it gets cut-off if I try to slide it over toward an edge of the screen. I hope I explained that OK (if you try it you'll see what I mean), and that there is some kind of workaround. Any thoughts, Steve (or anyone)? Thanks again!

Same problem. Video track for sure. By "widening" do you mean heighten the track? It is as high (or wide) as it can it. If we need to turn on advanced mode, i have no idea how to do that. I been clicking every "preference option" for an hour.
