Grad Filter Effect Tutorial Sony Movie Studio Platinum 13 12 Vegas

A tutorial explaining how to get a graduated nd filter effect in Sony Movie Studio Platinum.
Make sure you view in HD.
We all have shots where we need to brighten areas up (often the foreground) but don’t want to blow out the sky.
This tutorial shows you how to split the frame using a gradient matte or mask so you can work on the sky and ground separately. It covers the use of the Levels effect and Gaussian blur to make sure the transitions placed by the control points are smooth.
Absolutely no addins or effect packs are used - just basic Movie Studio Platinum.
The example uses a black/transparent gradient matte but a black/white matte would work just as well so long as you choose luminance for the type of matte when applying the Mask Generator Effect.
If you need a custom shape for a matte then you can build it in photoshop, and all the same principles but with vignette matte can be used to get the ‘Top Gear Effect’ .
You can also animate the matte if it needs to change orientation with the shot, but that can be tricky - easier to use multiple mattes and fade them together to get the effect you want.

I don't mind the talking at all, in fact, if you give reasons WHY you choose certain elements over others then that helps better understand the video. If you were completely mute, I wouldn't understand the whole picture.

    Great video. I knew it could be done, but I would never have figured that out in a million years. My situation was that I was shooting in the shade where the subjects were, but outside of the shade and in the background was intense sunlight. So the shot video was somewhat dark. When I upped the brightness for the subjects, the background blew out. Your solution worked very well, thanks so much.

Highly recommended as a stills location too :-) Good luck with your video editing. Great flickr stream.

    That was AWESOME!!! I have been looking for Sony Movie Studio Platinum tutorials that aren't just the average beginner stuff. I can't wait to go shoot some test footage and try this myself! I really like that you showed the end product and how well the FX worked while the camera was moving!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I could really use a tutorial on how to get wind distortion out of my footage!!! I have a video called the Wes and Cody show that was totally ruined by wind noise.

  • @SartorialPictures

    @SartorialPictures

    9 жыл бұрын

    Hey, thanks for that. Hope the effect works for you. The blur filter helps to cover up the join when there is movement but sometimes youll need to fade mattes together if say the horizon tilt changes in a shot. Yes wind noise is a big problem. Did you use the full waterproof casing or the open back on your gopro? I find the open back casing on the gopro doesnt help much and thats just on a pedal bike at no more than say 25mph. see the route 7 video. So I have to turn up the music or rerecord voice or road sounds at lower speeds if its really bad and edit them in.

Now that I know that Platinum can work with layered videos just like you can with layered photos in PS / Gimp, this opens creative possibilities for time lapses or sped up / slowed down movies.. "Make a Selection" ,... then modify the selected area or preserve the selected area , or maybe invert the selection . or apply the selection to a different layer image . PhotoShop books , you will read over and over agian , "Make a selection" . Magic Wand , Gradient Mask ( any mask image ) , magnetic lasso ,...etc ,... Chroma key can even be used to "Cut a Hole" in an image . only one big thing remians ,...What are the needed steps to complete a specialized task ? Thus this tutorial is still needed.

    Hi, I have some hand held video footage and in the background is a set of lights directly behind the subject which shines into the lens causing over exposure. I want to darken these lights or even remove them entirely. Is there a way of doing this considering this hand held footage and movement on the camera? Thanks :-)

  • @SartorialPictures

    @SartorialPictures

    4 жыл бұрын

    Darkening should be easy enough so long as you aren't looking for an exact fit and there is space between light and subject. A good bit if blur on the matte would smooth the edges. Of course it depends how shaky the footage is too. If the subject is strongly back lit then it might have edge lighting which will remain, even if you could cut out the background cleanly. I think the key to a reasonable result is making a custom shape matte in something like Photoshop. Then using motion tracking on the matte would keep it where it needs to be on the image. I think latest version has this, and I've used hitfilm express (free) to do similar on hand held footage.

    @@SartorialPictures Thank you for the reply. Although I cn use sony vegas for simple editing and tranisitions etc what you are talking about are things I've never really tried, apart from today and watching a few colour correction techniques and masking. kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZqmI3NaIddPfhKg.html Here is the video i'm referring to, as you can see this lights by his head cause lots of lens flare and over exposure that i'd lke to reduce. The video is of my father who suddenly passed away on Saturday and I will be showing this at his funeral. Whist i can sharpen and adjust certain things I'm not educated enough in what you are saying to fully understand it all. Could you possibly make a quickish tutorial in this at all? Many thanks :-)

Then within Movie Studio when assembling the tutorial and editing together the full screen video captured with AP, I zoom in with either the event pan/crop control or the track motion. The quality recorded by the active presenter is good so any drop in quality resulting from the zoom isnt obvious. Hope that helps.

    It could've been all the way useful. BUT: Especially English tutorials (you're not the only one, btw) have one thing that goes completely wrong. It is talking, talking and only talking. If you want to show people how to use tools in their software, then PLEASE show it with using the software. Use all the sliders, knobs and functions just in time. It's not against you personally, but no one wants to see a still screen and someone is only talking about things to discover, if, when, why, what... - DO THESE THINGS, SHOW UP, ... I always have to skip and scroll, just to get to my visual information, I mean this is "video", not "audio book". You can easily edit your videos to give it some entertaining skills, something that brings the people closer. You have a topic to work on - why so much talking? This is KZread!
