@@deloreswilson1798 It's firm, almost meaty in texture. slightly chewy but not at all tough. Here in the UK and rest of NW Europe i.e. Netherlands, Germany etc they are called Rollmops, sold in jars, rolled up with onion and a bit of gherkin in the centre, held together with a little wooden skewer. Soused herring is an old south English variant of this.

@Zali Becquerel I'm Norwegian but I think it's best on lefse which is the soft cousin of flatbread, with rømme (sour cream), red onion and some fresh herb like parsley or dill (optional) . Flatbread (not to be confused with knekkebrød) is best served with grilled fish (Trout, Pollock, Cod etc.) with butter and sour cream, pepper and salt and some dill sprinkled on top. Some lemon juice squeezed on top also works wonderfully. Now I'm hungry 🤤.

in the old times they used to say this was the price you had to pay if you wanted to ferment fish properly for longterm storage. Its like the fish would come alive through the glass jar, sharding it everywhere in a great exploding wrath if you forgot to salt them before they went in the jar - they gotta be atleast as salty as the sea they came from. After you opened the jar, you didn't put them in the fridge? Another rookie mistake. If you open the jar, the north sea demons awaken, they have to be cold like the fjords of norway. Big hub bro, sorry you had to go through that.

If you like pickled herring you might try Soused herring or Sill lightly salted pickled Herring in a jar. My Norwegian mother in law used to serve them whole on a soft roll that resembles a artisan Hotdog bun with lots of chopped onion. Sill herring can be purchased at a German deli or IKEA of all places. Or it’s fairly easy to make at home if you can find some fresh Herring at the fish market.

As a native expert, in your opinion is there a best way to eat them? I see videos of people eating Surstrommig who enjoy it on some sort of flat bread, with sliced raw onions.
@REXFORGT
Жыл бұрын
@Zali Becquerel I'm Norwegian but I think it's best on lefse which is the soft cousin of flatbread, with rømme (sour cream), red onion and some fresh herb like parsley or dill (optional) . Flatbread (not to be confused with knekkebrød) is best served with grilled fish (Trout, Pollock, Cod etc.) with butter and sour cream, pepper and salt and some dill sprinkled on top. Some lemon juice squeezed on top also works wonderfully. Now I'm hungry 🤤.

I live in the Netherlands, we are a the herring nation, we devour them "raw" after a slight fermentation on salt. But one of the snacks i like once in a while are those herring filet pieces in cream sauce. It's that same pickled herring but then smothered with cream sauce with pieces of onion in it. Same butter smooth bite goes down easy with a beer.

As a working musician, you gotta pay your dues if you expect to make a living. That means playing A LOT of bar mitzvahs! Trust me. You learned to love pickled herring.
Never had pickled herring (it scared me) until about 5 years ago at a friend's Thanksgiving (they are upper-Midwest Norwegian stock). It's amazing stuff, and I look forward to having it a few times a year.
Pickled herring is what it's all about:) I love that stuff. There's so many variations, spices, herbs, cream, boze, salt, acidity, sweetness. I'm gonna crack a can right now to celebrate :)
This puts me back to grandma's living room "cocktail snacks" that we used to eat with Ritz crackers. I learned to love them!
Love pickled herring! Personal favorite is Olsen brand.
My friends polish mom makes the most amazing pickled herring with onions. Nothing has ever compared.
This is the type of fish that got me started on preserved fish initially. Rollmops are popular in the UK and so I was always fed them as a kid. They help your lobes grow big.

in the old times they used to say this was the price you had to pay if you wanted to ferment fish properly for longterm storage.
I’m loving the shirt, ye Lord of Flatbush
Love the Vita herring and love to be loving more the Vita herring in sour cream sauce over the wine. Either way, good stuff. Now you absolutely have to do a review of the Vita Herring in Sour Cream! Mahalo!
The music is turning this whole thing into a comedic act 😂
I've seen pickled herring at my local supermarket and I often ask myself 'who eats this?" But the fact that they keep restocking it means someone is eating it.
It is uncooked fish, preserved by pickling. Being a German family from Brooklyn, we were required, possibly by Burrough law, we learned to love them.

I've always wanted to try this but i just bought it today because of your video!! It's so delicious! I was pleasantly surprised. I also added some soy sauce and thai chili and its really a great experience! The spice really brings out the savory umami taste from the fish and vinegar. Try it out!!

But, Mateo - ditching the tin cans for glass opens up a whole new world for you and us! Be careful where your feet lead you - next stop boxed fish fingers! 😕 Seriously, I love fish and have eaten similar to this, but the visual aspect of fish in liquid as opposed to (olive) oil is visually 'challenging'. However, I would urge people to give it a whirl.
