My inner canned fish enthusiast is about to embark on a journey of discovery and sensory delight. I've always been a closeted lover of sardines and kippers because my family and friends think it's weird, but through this channel, I will explore all of the canned fish options available to me and learn to truly appreciate the wondrous variety of palatable, preserved, pescatarian snacks which exist.

The way to prepare is take the leftover half of a baguette and slice it long ways into 3 slices. Drizzle olive oil and toast in the oven. Once it's out add some mayonnaise, sliced onion, the Sardines, maybe some cucumber, fresh herbs, top with dried herbs, paprika, lemon juice, be creative!

I was eating a can of sardines after being inspired by your channel and it made me think about life. How sometimes we have these ideas in our head about a particular subject and can’t be convinced otherwise until we experience something that changes our perspective. Food is such a basic aspect of our life that we can all relate to and we’re all hardwired to seek food when we’re hungry. To be able to open a can of sardines and have your perspective changed goes to show that sometimes we have a very tenuous grasp on things in life. That sometimes life can still surprise us. Life is like a can of sardines. There is hidden beauty all around us and sometimes we just don’t notice it. That sometimes even the littlest of things can be powerful and life changing. There is something magical about sardines. You feel powerful after discovering sardines, like nothing can hold you back. That if you can conquer a can of sardines, what can stop you? You just experienced something incredible that the world has to offer and so many people walk around you without knowing themselves. It’s like knowing a powerful secret and all you want to do it share it. And if this secret exists in plain sight, what other interesting things in life are just waiting to be discovered? I think canned sardines transcends being just basic food. It’s a metaphor for opening up our minds, bringing down walls in our life rather than raising them, and learning to try something new that at first seems strange and unwelcoming.

Just ate my first can of sardines. Matiz Wild Sardines in Spanish Olive Oil. I knew it was good for me and I like fish. You helped with the fear. I had a few beers, got the drunk hunger in me, and went to town. I opened to tin to see three fat sardines. Being larger was definitely intimidating and I do kind of thing it might have been easier to start with a smaller fish, the King Oscar sprats or whatever else is recommended. I just went for it. No weird textures, everything was just smooth and tender. Taste was like the best canned tuna I've had- and I've had the fancy oil-packed stuff in jars. Having fat fish was probably a bonus in the end because it was very tender, moist, and delicious. There was maybe the smallest textural element of scales and skin and bones but overall the entire experience was smooth and delicious. I used a fork, it was kind of awkward. Your chopsticks technology seems good. Don't be scared, it's cheap and healthy and delicious.

My girlfriend is getting curious as to what im watching and i show her your videos and shes interested. So long story short my girlfriend and i now try out and test different brands, types and styles of sardines and canned fish every night while watching your videos and we love it and look forward to it every night, lol. We're from NY as well so we're gettin into all the stop and shop and trader joe brands for now. Thanks, Matt 👌🏼

Good on you! Meat is the only food you can live solely on and not be deficient. And you know what they say, you are what you eat, and you're made of meat.. almost everyone is deficient in omega 3's, real omega 3's. Most are protein deficient, which leads to overeating and lacking muscle and bone mass.

I grew up eating sardines (in oil, or tomato sauce), and I typically ate them with sliced onions and steamed white rice. Then I switched to the Nuri brand the spicy kind and I can't get enough of them, even though each can is pricey now. There's a substitute from Morroco I sometimes find that tastes just like the Nuri brand but I can't recall their name at the moment. People usually gross out when they find out I eat sardines. 🤷‍♂

This guy’s videos feel like an SNL skit. He’s just that got that dead pan serious but quietly hilariousness about him and I love it! I stumbled on these late one night and I do have a bunch of canned fish I got in case of emergency due to power grid troubles in our area, but honestly I have been kind of scared to try them. And he is helping me overcome that fear about this. My mom always acted like these were the worst thing in the world and said never to eat them, but she said the same thing about raspberries, which I didn’t taste until I was 21 and fell in love with them, so I’ve questioned her taste ever since. Grew up being told never to eat certain foods all because she hated them. Raspberries taught me that I have my own taste pallet and I’ll be willing to bet I like these, because I like fish and seafood.

Until recently I worked at a grocery store stocking shelves, and my "home isle", the isle i learned first and stocked most often, was the isle with sardines. They were on the top shelf in the back end of the isle with all the other canned fish/meat. The one kind of sardines they had was that exact King Oscar can. And every time I stocked them, which was not often since they did not sell quickly, I thought about grabbing a can to try. Now, literal days after I move on from that job I get a video telling me to try them.

I think a really excellent entry level sardine is the season brand from Costco. They’re bigger fillets so they actually have to cut them up and you don’t see the scales or bones. They are also in olive oil which I think is the easiest way to start eating them. I used to be a sardine hater until I tried that brand and now I don’t ever leave on a camping trip without a few in my pack. They’re a little bit expensive, especially if you buy them in singles, but I think they’re absolutely worth it.
