Great buy. MC-9 was the coach I drove between 1985 ~ 1987 as an tour bus driver. Brings me back some wonderful memories. Even today, I feel the MC-9 had the best coach air conditioner. You can practically hang a meat in the coach.

That's a great story about your mentor. I was looking for months for a bus conversion. I joined a bus website, and started talking to the guys on there, made friends right away. I'm in Texas, anyway I found a 1982 Custom Coach MCI MC9 in Ohio, one of the members on the website stepped up like nobody has since my own father. His name is Walter, he is 77, he went and inspected it for me, when I decided to purchase it, he offered to help me drive it home, and he went and did a pretrip maintenance on it the day before I got there, he lives 2 hours from there. He has been around buses and big rigs his whole life, was in Korea, as well as Vietnam, a mans man. We were on the road for 11 hours the first day, and 17 hours the second day, what an amazing human being, what an amazing journey. I will be indebted to Walter forever. Like you I have many things to fix, but will get it all done eventually. I'll drop a video below. Financially you don't. They're made for commercial entities and are very overbuilt to run 24/7 for practically 20 years. Tires are 1k a piece for good ones on rims. Its a labor of love to keep these old girls out of the scrap yard. Not because they're dead, but because they're "old".

Great job. The first coach we bought was a 102A3. I still run it. The 8v92 is unbelievable. I would drive my A across the country before I took my J. The reason I love the A is the 5 speed trans. Nobody but myself and my father (which has driven bus since 72) can properly drive her. Love the videos. Also know Andy very well. Lol. Good luck with everything. Nice to see a young person with this passion for this industry.

@@threeparots1 I have a J also. I was transporting troops with both buses. The other guy that was driving the J was amazed at how the 8v would pass him on the hills. I love that bus.

I drove for GLI for quite a number of years. This is a beautiful coach and sadly represents a by gone era in the Hound's history. I love 9's and 12's and use to drive a eastern run from Seattle to BIllings MT. They always got you there and had a perfect lower center of gravity driving in inclement weather which produced stability. You are very fortunate to find this coach with the period livery. There a few things that aren't correct but it sounds like you have a handle on that. The 9's had the exact same steering wheel as the 7's did. GLI was in a full mode automatic transmission fleet when the 9's came online. Happy that there are a few people who understand the historical significance of these coaches and haven't butchered them into a conversion. I have a close friend that has a 1956 Scenicruiser in anniversary livery. He has been very generous in letting me drive it to a few bus rally's, an awesome experience. Thank you preserving it and keeping it seated. Good luck and thanks for sharing!

Dude, was your Hound run from Seattle to Billings a multi-segment run? I thought from Seattle the runs east were to Spokane, maybe St. Regis for a while. Just curious. I rode Hounds as a youngster and collect old timetables and route guides. Thanks.

I drove for Greyhound in 2001. At that time there were still a few MC12's left in the fleet. Most had 6v92's and I drove one with a Detroit diesel 50 series. Most buses were the 102DL3's and the G models were just coming into the fleet (in the northeast anyway). There was a 1990 MC12 out of Toronto in the Canadian fleet that had a 5 speed manual.

Of the MC12's that Greyhound Canada had, many were manual transmission, even 7-speed manual. Greyhound USA has been automatic only since 1973.

So cool to see your passion for these great busses. I have many. many miles in these mc9 and mc12 coaches as a Greyhound driver based in Seattle in the 90s and 2000s. Looking forward to see your journey with this coach.

Alot of nice tech on these coaches in their prime, what's was fascinating to me is when they have to make a wide turn the bus leans away from the turn and I swear your first experience you feel the bus is about to tip over but....great memories....I remember coming thru memphis hub on greyhound it was like nothing I've ever seen before watching all the people, buses, smelling the diesel, that weird but sweet smell of the lavatories being filled back up, all the lights one buses at night, my favorite all time is the eagles specially when trailways and greyhound ran for each other, good times...good times.

MonsterMidi That's cool, I purchased a 1980 MCI MC9 8V-71 HT740 4spd Allison automatic transmission.

I drove Greyhounds in 1980, out of Thunder Bay, and met some wonderful people, both passengers, and drivers Your drive through Northern Ontario brought back so many memories for me. Thank you for providing me an opportunity to relive that important time.

When I started working for greyhound, I worked at the greyhound garage on New York Ave in Washington DC, the first buses I learned how to drive, thanks to the mechanics were MCI 8’s and MCI 9’s. I enjoyed the experience and felt their power. I’ve been with the greyhound business for more than 3 decades.

@@tipsandtrips7519 Yes, and it wasn’t a happy merger. Employees lost their jobs, run around with employee’s senority. It lead to a huge strike in 1990. I had to walk the picket lines, because of an unfair labor practices. For a moment...... the company did come roaring back under the leadership of CEO Craig Lentz and John Taylor. Went back down hill under Steve Gorman and First Transit. There is not much left of greyhound bus lines. A lot of the company has been liquidated.

I just found your channel. Great video! I don’t drive for greyhound. I’ve been driving 18 wheelers for 23 years. But I do love busses. My late grandfather drove for greyhound for 30 years. He probably drove a buses just like that one. I hope maybe one day I could see your bus. Maybe you’ll have it on display at a bus show or something like that.

MCI coaches pioneered the highways of Queensland Australia, Ansett pioneer coaches had MCIs exactly the same colour decals as greyhound U.S.A and Canada, ive gone visiting family many times on school holidays on MCI coaches 1976 to 1983 models until pioneer sold off the fleet, MCI and Silver Eagles coaches will always be legends on the highways. So glad to see people keeping them and looking after them 😊

Absolutely amazing! I’m a bus enthusiast (nut), have been since I was a little boy. I can vividly remember my first ride on a ScenicCrusier (double decked GMC Greyhound) back in the late ‘50’s. Anyway, been driving since 1982. I’ve experienced the MC5, (have ridden the MC6), MC7, MC8, MC9 (Your bus, lol), MC12, (just like the 9, different headlights and taillights) 96A3, 102A3, J4000 (DL3), and all the “J’s.” The newest one in our fleet is of course a 2013 J4500. Anyway, sorry for the rambling. It is very nice to know that I’m NOT the only one out there that has such a passion for buses, (motor coaches...lol) Can’t wait to see your next video on your pride and joy!

loooks like you got a nice bus ,, MC9 is the last of the nice old bus designs ,,I caught the BUS bug a few years ago and now own 2 buses of my own my family motorcoach is a 1947 GMC PD-3751 silversides ,which is an RV conversion done in 1974 ,i live in it during the warm months and it is fully off grid set up with 14 solar panels on the roof and my most recent acquisition a monstrous 1992 Prevost coach H5-60 articulated motorcoach ,,literally the largest bus ever built ,it will become a tiny home on wheels which i plan to live in when i retire in a few years ,,you are way ahead of me at 28 ,, i just turned 46 and only got my first bus at 40,,there were fewer than 50 of the big H5-60 buses built due to the very complicated design and how hard it is to maintain it is nearly impossible to work on the engine ,in the case of mine it has an 8V92 TA detroit diesel which barely ran when i bought it in june of 2020 ,,i had to tear up the floor in the bus because they did not build in access panels above the engine ,,i redesigned the floor to be easily removed so i can get to the upper engine easily now ,,my engine got new sleeves and pistons and a full set of bottom end bearings plus i had the heads cleaned and valves done and new injectors installed ,,the valves were badly burned from lack of maintenance and overheating ,,it's pretty neat to drive though because the rear section steers as the bus articulates surprisingly making it handle very well in tight turns , it'll be a fun project

Man dude. I remember those 1980s greyhound buses. I rode those buses every weekend in 1988 and 1989 with dark blue seats. The buses I rode on in 1989 was one of the first ones with a push button for the doors in 1989. Ones I rode in 1988 had those manual doors like you have.

I knew for sure that wasn’t an original greyhound bus. The first greyhound MCI 9’s in the USA were the 8100 series then the 8200 series, starting from the 6350 up to the 6800 series in the eastern side of the continental divide and the 8100 to the 8800 series that ran cross country, the 8900 and the 9000 series never ran east of the continental divide, the 4000, 4100 ran the east coast, the 2800 series ran the Midwest area. The 4750 to the 4900 series also ran east of the continental divide, the 5000 to the 5100 series also ran cross country. All the MCI 9s in the USA were automatics starting 8 cylinder then the 6 cylinder diesels. They were good runners and those buses were, very reliable, very, very few disappointments. The new buses today are garbage.

I dispatched for GLI in NOD late 80s early 90s and remember one day sched 486 had not one but two 9000 series west coast buses on it. COC sent a message to us and HOU and us to cut them out and send them back west but HOU couldn't do it so onto NOLA they came. Pretty cool seeing them there and totally illegal that far east, think they weren't registered beyond AZ. Anyway we cut them out and got them heading towards home the next day. Also there were a few MC-9 manual transmissions out there but none that GLI bought new, these were buses that were part of the Buslease fleet that were leased to charter operators that GLI must have taken back and they just painted them red, white and blue and put them in the fleet. One I remember distinctly was 5224, it was a beautiful bus with different high back seats and even had TV monitors.8V71/5-speed too, was always funny when those guys would go down there to load their schedule and they'd call up to dispatch and say hey man, that bus has a stick shift! Fun times.

@@thud9797 Did you dispatch out of NOD during the time that the furthest west a driver could go was Lake Charles? I remember when LC was a division point for the longest, even up until the last east/west divisions in 1969.

Nice bus drove lots of these for Horizon Coach lines out of Vancouver BC. We had 79 to 1984s. these buses are bullet proof they will keep on going, one of the best if not the best buses made. Great video good look on your adventures.👍

Mci model 9's we're my favorite model to operate. I once drove an MCI model 9 with a 5 speed mechanical transmission.

Just found your channel. We have a 1978 MC8 Voyeur Colonial, 1960 GM PD4104 Trailways and a 1947 GM PD3751 Greyhound. Love what you're doing.

Those 9's rode good, drove good, and if that Screaming Demon was tuned right..they would fly..

Good luck young man. It’s a hard road the bus Industry. I worked as a mechanic, Driver and owner at a young age too. Drove so many types of coaches all types of passengers, seniors,students, entertainers and rock bands. U2 was the biggest group I toured in 1992. I hope things open up for the Industry once again like the 80’s and 90’s. Be safe and happy motoring. 🚌🚍

Im still looking for that era MC9 since I drove them back int he day...but I already have 2 other buses, and working on getting an articulated one too...if I can find the one I want. My favorite MCI is the MCI MC9 Crusader ii Coach series and the Americruiser 2 From Greyhound lines inc until they retire those buses in 2001 my last time see those buses at the Atlantic city bus station at Atlantic and Michigan Avenues and Philadelphia Greyhound bus station at 10th and Filbert streets

I always wondered what Greyhound did with all their buses when they shut down. Thanks for the answer. I almost was set to be a driver for them, luckily, it would have been very short-lived. I sure miss greyhound running down the highways in BC esp. R.I.P. Henry. By the way KILO means 1000. That word does NOT change to kiawe!! Just like KILO-watt, KILO-gram, KILO-volt. Two words! Metre means "Distance." So it is KILO-Metre!!!

That MCI looks and sound better than the newer MCI’s I drove before my company switched to prevost

Oh snap, welcome to the bus owner's club, now you're in for it.

I find it odd that if it's a true Greyhound, that it has the MCI letters in the front where the galloping dog is normally at. Greyhound would remove the galloping dog badge when the bus was retired, leaving an empty space. Also, it has the plastic fender well trim on the vacuum drive and tag axles. Most older Greyhounds didn't have that option. The dash 12s were common with that rear fender trim. Give me a dash 9 with the 8v71 or 8v92 with automatic transmission any day.

If your burning oil, you should check the rings and valve stem seals as well as engine seals.

Yes sir! She was never actually a hound; she was a western charter bus for two small family businesses. She shifts so tightly, she’s in 9/10 condition. Was only wrapped as greyhound for movies. It’s the best of both worlds! She’d never be as mint if she was a hound, she shifts so tightly; Must never have been floated. She’s in ottawa with me if you’re ever up!!

The mc-9s I drove out of Vancouver were automatics and had overhead bin doors. Would have a preferred the 5 speed though. My favourite was the MC-9 SS (mc-12), with the 6v92 turbo and a 7speed manual and better suspension but same frame though

Chances are that MCI could have been built in Roswell New Mexico. I worked for MCI for 20 years. Looks like a 8v92 two stroke.

MCI had a factory in Pembina, North Dakota. The Roswell factory was called TMC or Transportation Manufacturing Corporation. Many of the charter company MC-9s I drove had the TMC logo on the front instead of MCI. TMC also built transit buses and for a time, built the GMC RTS II under license from GM after GM got out of the bus building business. The factory where this bus was built will be shown on the data plate located in the driver compartment above the side window.

@@TenMinuteTrips you are correct the North Dakota plant from what I herd was just get the seats installed. I Worked at TMC in Roswell for 20. We manufactured the entire greyhound bus. TMC was owned by Dial corporation out of phoenix.

i have a 1995 MCI12 WITH SERIES 60 Detroit and Allison HT745 REBUILD Transmisson and also bought a 1995 flixibile Metro B 35 ft with Series 50 and Allison 731automatic the switch it to Allison B500R IN 2018 AND IT RIDES sMOOTH I put in Led's Headlights this is ex Cota Bus 9505 from Columbus, OH which reitre in 2012

Just a small remark, when you said the coachbus it made me laugh, it is eather a coach or a bus but never a coachbus, a bus has fixed seats and runs within a city, a coach has reclining seats and runs between citys and intersate, sorry I just had to remark on that.
