The Ar-15 was the first rifle my husband taught me to shoot a little bit after we married. Coming from Japan and living in a country with very strict gun laws almost nobody has one i felt safer in the USA when my husband trained me. Interestingly enough i held and shot Airsoft AR-15s growing up and i was amazed how realistic my brother’s blowback airsoft version is. I’m glad my husband brought me into this community and i was amazed that my husband who is South African was very at home with Galil style rifles and FN Fal. His go to rifle at home and at work is the AR-15. Great reliability and perfect in my hands.

My first "defensive rifle" I owned was a Ruger Mini-14. I had owned a 10/22 since I was a kid, so already was familiar with Ruger firearms and the Mini-14 was a natural choice. Has full FFL clearance and builds and works on guns. But is all word of mouth only and is retired from his main oil and gas career, highly successful. And, only builds a few guns a year, and, worked on my dad’s gun for free because he just likes my dad or something. Full shop. K not cnc barrel making machine full. But full hobbyist type shop to do reloading and tweak scopes and barrels and to build guns from parts kits and stuff. And he does not work a full time schedule.

I think the most daunting part of buying an AR for new buyers is all the models and accessories. M4, Flat top, m lok, mod loc, picatinny, calibers, etc. I remember when I bought my first years ago and being so overwhelmed when I looked across the counter at several rows of AR’s and thinking WTH? They kind of look the same. Lol.

Yeah that's why shop owners need to have knowledge in what they're selling and ability to explain to the customers. Its shouldn't be treated like going to a convenience store with different flavors of potato chips. Its why I don't own an ar. I've shot them a bit, but charging handle is just always awkward for me and 5.56 feels a little under-powered living in the plains. I agree that a more "basic" AR is the best choice if that is your only/first rifle. I would recommend just a couple of things over just an "M4" clone. 1. An M-lok handguard for simplifying adding attachments which people will inevitably want, and 2. a mid-length gas system, which makes the gun more pleasant to shoot. Other than that, simpler (parts commonality) is probably better. Kudos to Donut, MAC, and everyone else supporting Paul Harrell. He's shared a wealth of absolutely invaluable information over the years in an interesting/entertaining way and he will be sorely missed.

One of the best features of the AR15 is when something isn't going right it's easy to narrow down what the problem is. That problem is usually inexpensive to correct and most likely doesn't require a gunsmith or armorer. My first AR wss nothing but problems. I took all my surplus GI mags and replaced the followers with Magpul brand and went ahead and replaced the springs with chrome silicon type. That was over 15 years ago and i havent had a malfunction since then. Keep it pretty clean and lubed up. I think this video is pretty solid advice.

It’s one of those cancers that by the time you are symptomatic to realize you have it your prognosis is bad as it’s probably spread to multiple nearby organ systems. :(. That’s also why colon cancer is usually fatal if not picked up by a colonoscopy because if a tumor gets big enough to cause a bowel obstruction it’s pretty big and probably spread through your body. I've never had a direct gas impingement AR of any caliber which didn't run 100% with any ammo I put through it. I would get a JAKL as a 2nd MDR but not as a first/only. Just one guy's opinion.

  • @hardball107
    @hardball1075 ай бұрын

I personally agree with your comments. I started shooting AR's back in '85, started building them in '90. I even built one from cast off parts that my friends said needed improvement, only part I bought was a Rainier lower. A real mixmaster it just displays the interchangeability of parts with none being from the same manufacturer. It shoots to 3/4moa, functions' flawlessly with anything I feed it and still serves to this day as my truck gun. As for a defensive weapon 5.56 would not be my first choice. In my case home or very close in defense a long gun always beats a handgun and I find a AR pistol in 9mm or the one I have in 45ACP using Grease Gun mags fill the bill. I'm not looking for a firefight and where I live engaging a target over 10 yards can land you behind bars. Overpenetration is an issue and even the 9mm out of a 11.5" barrel with the increased velocity can be a concern. Just to show the versatility of the AR platform I am building a Flightlite lever action that uses AR uppers, my choice is 350 Legend. Everyone loves a lever gun and with mags in the lower you can use spitzer bullets, the 350L gives you the choice of full power 200gr hunting loads or 158gr cast plinkers at 5 cents/round or anything in between because it's not gas operated. Literally the AR platform is the modern kit gun and with the gamut of calibers available form 22lr to 450 Raptor it can fill any role.

For SHTF purposes you are very correct. Plus, the modularity is stellar. I got a Bushmaster during the assault weapon ban (when it was still the original company). It was an AR-15 A2 variant. It had a heavy barrel with no threading, bayonet lug etc. When the ban lapsed, I bought a Mil-Spec barrel. It was a breeze to put in. The original barrel is very good, for hunting. It is a simple matter to get a flat top upper receiver, a free floated handguard, put a scope on it and now you have a long-range varmint gun. With the right ammo you could even take deer. And it just pops on to the lower which takes, what, a minute. For handguns, the same. I would recommend a Glock, a Beretta 92, a 1911 and now perhaps a SIG P-320. Of course, there are lots of other guns to collect and shoot.

I have a SIG MCX .300blk with a 9 inch barrel, specifically for home defence. It shoots well and is VERY accurate out to 50yds. It's light and easy to move around with indoors.

Shirt bought. The entire situation brought me to tears the other night. Broke down unexpectedly. I spent many thanksgivings and Christmases with his videos when I had no family to share with. Never thought through how important it was to me. That was until I thought of those videos not being there anymore And seriously. He put out Christmas and Thanksgiving videos that were mindless I guess at the time. Din't know how important to my sanity they were until thinking they may be gone.

I have always believed that domestic ammo sales will directly correlate with the probability of resupply from the world when all the factories go quiet. I want something that gives Yogi pause, eats SAPI plates, has abundant logistical resupply, simple and reliable mechanics, and hyper versatility/interoperability. As of right now, MAC has totally sold me on the SFAR as my first civilian rifle.

12:48 If the soldiers' barrel is bent or the optic is shot, you could still salvage parts from it to repair your own rifle. Also: you don't know the status of that rifle; you do know your own rifle, so picking it up as merely spare parts is a valid option.

I just bought an Aero Precision M4E1 lower, a MagPul stock, MagPul flip-up sights, and a Bear Creek Arsenal 16" right side charging upper in 5.56mm NATO with 1-in-7" nitride finish M4 profile barrel. I mounted a SiG Romeo5 red-dot that I had sitting around, and put together exactly what I wanted for about $500.00. It's about 7½ lbs. Now all I have to do is zero it.

Another great video Tim! Can you do a video on how to properly zero an LPVO? Should you use the factory recommendation so that your BDC's line up or should you use a combat zero, then figure out where your BDC's line up?

AR-15 hands down. It's modular like a Lego set. Custom build from parts to suit. Don't need "Gucci Gear". Plenty of solidly made components that won't break the bank. Repair in field can use what's available that works and will suffice temporarily. First rifle as an adult was M14. Second was M16A1. Current Ar-15 is more flexible than the M16A1 or M16A2.

Eugene Stoner's AR-15 is not just a rifle. It's a Modular Weapon's System that can be tailored to suit whatever defense needs that you have. It's the wise choice because of it's popularity and there's 65 years of parts available out there to keep them up and running.

An important aspect for home defense IMO is over penetration. Based on the evidence I have seen, the 5.56 is a better round that does not over penetrate as much as most pistol rounds and buckshot or slugs. The round has the tendency to tumble and break apart, reducing the chances of rounds exiting your house and hitting unintended objects. Add in shorter barrels, flexibility of individual setup, high round capacity, the AR15 is the ideal long gun for home defense.

Psa runs sales so good that a person can get a barreled upper and a completed lower ….of which you can have the barreled upper shipped directly to your home…for $600. And I’m pretty sure you get a mid length gas system in that price range too.

Totally agree, Tim. You know I like all the modern designs that have essentially evolved from the ACR just like you do, but when I am working in the store and someone is looking for their first defensive rifle, off we head to the AR rack where we start talking budget to help guide them into a rifle package, and I do that for the exact reasons you listed. Now, once you have your defensive AR all sorted out, dialed in and you are proficient with it, and maybe even have a backup AR to go with it, now let's start talking about some other newer designs...

For those looking for AR-15 alternatives, for whatever reason you may have, PSA JAKL and PSA AK, (specifically the model that takes STANAG 5.56 mags) The JAKL gives you that cool ACR look while actually having SOME parts compatibility with the AR-15, whilst being a long stroke piston system with adjustable gas block, more ideal for suppression. And the PSA AK 5.56 is a better AK alternative for people who like the AK platform but still want magazine and ammo compatibility with the modern standard.

There is absolutely nothing to worry about having the military attacking the citizens or even confiscating guns. Every person who joins the military takes an oath to protect and uphold the Constitution of the United States. They wouldn't break their oath to the Constitution.
