Thanks for the tip, it gave me one of my coolest successful hunts yet. I just shut up for 50 minutes while shaking with adrenaline as two gobblers slowly gobbled their way towards me.

Dale - THANK YOU for the guidance/coaching. Just bagged a big Tom this morning doing the very thing you taught here. The biggest thing, as you said, was being patient and resisting that urge to try and call to locate him. First saw him strutting at about 70 yards to my soft calls and then he disappeared. Kept hearing your words “Go Silent; let him come find you,” and he did. Took him at about 35 yards as he came in strutting - NEVER gobbled once. Appreciate ya!

10:47 'They know where you're at." This was the first lesson I learned turkey hunting. Turkeys gobbled a good 200 yards behind me in the woods. On their approach, it was impossible for them to see me until about 50 yards away. They had to come around a corner. As soon as they got around the corner, they were looking right at me. I don't mean about where I was, or close to where I was. They were looking right at me. They knew exactly where I had been when I called

After 25 years of using this method and killing lotsa toms it’s still a struggle to keep from calling on that long wait. 3 minutes seems like 30 and I know I’ve given up too soon plenty of times but the times I held it together are so sweet. The weight of a gobbler over the shoulder on the walk out makes “pick a spot” well worth it. Great reminder video Matt.

On the last day of the season one year I was actually ready for season to end. It had been a great year. I decided to hike way back on top of a beautiful ridge top where I built a ground blind and settled in with a book and breakfast calling every 15 minutes or so..I was going to hunt all day if I had to. I didn't need to. I didn't hunt that way because it's not how I roll but it sure worked that day to finish my year with a smile 😊

This is sorta how we got my son's first bird. That bird was hung up on the neighbor's land. We set up as far back as we could. I called he gobbled. I called. He gobbled. I shut up. He gobbled. An hour later he walked into range and my son carried out the 2nd largest bird shot on that farm.

Denny Gulvas talked about this technique in his Challenging Pressured Gobblers film back in the 90's - Excellent technique for drawing a bird to you when they won't close the distance and you can't get closer. Good stuff!

Yes, this was definitely a concept brought to General attention by Denny Gulvas. I enjoy Matt's videos but I certainly think it would have been approptiate to mention he heard it first from Denny and Dick in the comments. Don't say "I call it pick a spot calling"when others have beat you to it. Make another video indicating this isn't a technique you came up with or named on your own without ever having heard it previously. This is flat-out deception.

@@beechwoodscalling4090there’s nothing new under the sun we all learn from our dads or grandfathers. I never set out to try to deceive anyone. When your in the moment filming you can’t think of everything. I learned a lot from my dad, dick Kirby, Tom Stucky , Alex Rutledge, and a few more guys when I started out as a kid. But I can’t think of everything each one has taught me over the years. I didn’t know Denny gulvas very much as his videos wasn’t around much where I was. I only watched one and that was the first one he ever did and I was like 10 years old. Nothing we do as hunters is our own. It’s already been done but many in a new generation don’t know anything about these tactics. But never did I try to deceive anyone

Gobblers ABSOLUTELY do home in on the EXACT spot where you call from! And they won’t follow the script! Last week in New Mexico, my 14 year old son shot a monster Merriams. I tried to film The shot, but that Tom didn’t come in the way I thought he would. He walked STRAIGHT at us (the sound of my calling). He knew the exact tree that hen (me) was beside! I told my son to go ahead and shoot him when he got to 30 yards. He was a boss gobbler! Love your videos, Matt!!! Are you a minister, by chance? If you aren’t, you missed your “calling”, son!!!

This works when hunting with another person also. You walk away, keeping the hunter between you and the bird. When you start calling the bird thinks you have lost interest and are moving on. Your buddy could get a shot. This has worked for me a couple of times.
