Physician Assistant (PA) and Nurse Practitioner (NP) programs are generally between 2 and 3 years, and once you graduate from an accredited program, you become eligible to sit for your board certification exam, then if you pass, you can get your necessary licensing and start working as an Advanced Practice Provider (APP). However, even though they are eligible to work right away, some PAs and NPs elect to complete a fellowship after they graduate, or sometimes even mid-career as a career change. These PA and NP fellowships are generally 12 months in duration, and are available in fields such as emergency medicine, surgery, trauma, dermatology, and urgent care.
