If anyone is having problems understanding why Ab is used when in C, it's because this lesson is based on borrowing chords from the Phrygian mode. C Phrygian is the 3rd mode of Ab major, so they use C (from the key of C) as a starting point, then use the rest as if we suddenly switched to the key of Ab, playing the rest of the progression with chords that correspond to the harmonized Ab major scale, resolving back to C in the end. So, in the first example, the I IV V vi progression in C would be Cmaj7 Fmaj7 G7 and Amin7. But doing the modal interchange the I IV V vi would now become Cmaj7 Dbmaj7 (the 4th chord, not from C, but from the harmonized Ab major scale) Eb7 (the 5th chord from the harmonized Ab major scale) and finally Fmin7 (the 6th chord from the harmonized Ab major scale). Then it resolves to C. Hope that helps someone.

So basically what is happening.. The progression is I-IV-V-vi-I and Adam says everything goes to Ab but the tonic. Means now we will play C and rest of the chords means (4-5-6 chords) in the key of Ab which gives us Db-Eb-Fm and then we land back to C major.. you can use the same concept for the rest of the progressions in this video. And since this is Ab (C becomes Phrygian mode) so now if you want to explore you can change the mode of C to maybe C Dorian and now you are in the key if Bb. You can try the same chord progression and now they will be C - Eb - F - Gm - C. This is wildly subtle yet the concept just went under my radar.. one of the most beautiful lessons.. Thank you Adam and Open studio ❤

The tonic's root is still in that key, so even when you're going out, something's in. (....Reading that back, I'm not sure that made any sense lol sorry)

@@anthonywritesfantasy so you mean for example in the key of C you would play the I chord as C, but you would play the ii of Ab instead of the ii of C?

@@marbleblue5127yep, that's the idea
The kick drum an the bass are so in time together. Great Musicians
This sounds so much like a Keith Jarrett approach!

It’s because it’s a chromatic mediant from the one. Intervalically it’s either three or four half tones in either direction

It's supported by the drums and bass really tastefully and there's some tight playing on a very nice sound piano too.
Those walkdowns gave me chills.
Oh that first run is "Everything In Its Right Place" and sounds SO good. This is really cool.

I knew it was some Radiohead I was hearing! Couldn't figure out the song though. Thanks!
That last run was chef's kiss!!
Love all your clips. Do you have an album out?
my Sims house will be finished in no time flat listening to this...
Ahhhh, it's so beautiful. Can you imagine how rich my horn playing is becoming using this education? Good, baby..... so good. Prayers and props to the one and only David Sanborn. ❤
As a long time Phishhead, a lot of their older songs sound a lot like these progressions. Hit me immediately.
I could listen this for hours , I love simple things 💕
Total beauty. Please make an album with loads of improv over these 🙏🏼
okay seriously how does everything these guys do sound so goddamn amazing
The second Cush Chord at about halfway through is straight up I Love Music by Ahmad Jamal
Beautiful and didn't leave anything hanging. The last note of each progression was so satisfying.
The 1 4 5 6 sounds so good with the C starting it. All the Ab chords sounded so nice like that.
Could be an hour long song
It's amazing how amazing that sounds. Why doesn't the music on the radio sound like that?

Please make a single out of this.
This is so much more beautiful than it has any right to be. Thanks for this.
Makes me glad to be alive. Thanks Adam.
Great video... and that bass is so on point. Beautiful. Shine your light fellas.
You guys are ridiculous. You're so freaking good. It's awesome
Dang can’t wait to get back home after work and try this haha
These guys are too good at music it’s not fair
bass man is straight gangster
Feel like Ben folds is about to sing me a break up song
Absolutely lovely I switched to guitar after 25 years of piano about 5 years back, but the sound and flourishes here made me remember why I love piano.
Guys, literally your shorts and videos are the best jazz learning content on YT
Confession: I know I'm supposed to be learning here, but I just love hearing you play.
It’s so funny how I know nothing about music theory and still feel like I’m deeply learning something here😂
Dudes like a music chef that knows exactly how to craft the most tasteful melodies simply by following the basic rules

Only your comment makes sense to me
I'm happy the drummer that can do the correct chord progressions as well.
As a drummer, I have no idea what he’s actually talking about, but these chord progressions are divine
I have no idea how any of that works but there is magic happening. I want to bathe my spirit in some of those chord changes.
I swear I’ve learned more just watching y’all play than I ever have in a “tutorial”.
Eventhough this is a training video, I would love to hear a full version of this song. Straight funky, Baby! Yeah yeah....yeah!😎
Thank you. The sentimental semantic of progressions. The chords sequence are in self the mirror of the not always necessary melodies line. Thank you for your powerfull class. Musical expression and musical language is not necessary the same body. The Music is not a abstract unity. It's an enormous objective abstract convention.
Beautiful. Music stokes the fire in our souls ❤
Whew, that was some nice "first thing I hear after getting in from work" music.
Now i know what video I'll be studying for the rest of my life. Yes, it will take me that long 😂
I am literally listening to it all day long
Make a song! This is such a relaxing vibe. Nothing more needed.
That walk down is so beautiful. A great inspiration to play with these progressions more often & more freely!
This band sounds good!!!
Walk down from the C major scales holds this progression beuatifully together
Ill strart practicing tommorow Ty Adam and open studios
This is the coolest thing I’ve heard in a long time, and you are a fantastic teacher and player. Please keep it going 🙏🏽
God, I love these sounds!
Incidentally, I-IV-vi-V is Baby Shark.
1-4-5-6 is an underated progression imo
Ah, yes. These are words.
Genius magnificence brothers!
Man every time I come across one of your shorts I want to go write. I'm a classical musician by training, learned some jazz basics long ago and now I'm writing mostly RnB/neo-soul type stuff, where ideas and tips like these just open up whole new worlds 🙌 thanks for making these, really!
I love chords
0:41 Smiling Face by James Taylor came into my head
I love….LOVE your lessons! Proud to adapt them to guitar! Thank you!🙏🏼
What a wonderful thing the music is
This Ninja!!! Where's my pencil and paper?!?!?!?
skillz are crazy
Thanks!
Amazing how these different cords made my heart emote. There was a heartbreaking note I couldn't put my finger on, but it reminded me of 'Fruitflies - Gabriel Garzón-Montano'
I love this sound. For every listen, my mind soothes a little more.
I could listen to this all day
Everything in it’s right place
One day, I hope you tackle polychords, Adam. I bet you’d make some really tasty but spicy stew.
Everything about this video is stunning!
Make it a song please Was so good to my ears
Any Major Scale exists in Phrygian by inverting the distanes between maj scale. Therefore C and Ab are related through intervallic distances. (C Phyrgian stems from Ab Maj)
That chord melody you play over the top of Bm7 in the second example is just fuckin killer. So is the updated bass for the substituted chord progression each time
Thank you for this!
Thank you! so clear and helpful
This is beautiful ❤ Thank you very much
This blew my mind!
It just keeps getting better. You guys had a vision for this channel that is.
Sounds beautiful!!!
How can U make everything so beautiful?!?!?
Most beautiful thing ive heard on a loooong time.
Oh I do love a good non-diatonic modulation! Probably why I love those ben folds five records so much. Nicely done ❤
