I did a photo simular to this a few years ago. But in my photo the subject was photographed with a piece of ripped paper on her face, that she was holding. Then in photoshop I made the entire photo look like a pencil sketch, except for the part that she herself had ripped away, revealing the original photo. :)

Make sure the layer mask is active and brush over your image.

It' just a preview of things to come. With the layer mask active, when you brush black over your image , you're actually brushing black over the layer mask, thereby revealing the photo under it in the Layers panel.

cannot load the brushes because "unexpected end of file is encountered" how to fix ?

Photoshop is essentially a raster-based (pixel-based) application, however, there are some tools within it that are vector-based (i.e.: custom shapes tool using the "Shapes" and Text).
