PHOTOGRAPHING THE VOLCANO ERUPTION IN ICELAND 2022 | Hiking and photography tips.

A new volcano eruption started early August in Meradalir near Fagradalsfjall in Iceland. We went there to photograph the eruption and had a great time. The hike to the eruption took just over two hours one way and was totally worth it. We used both DJI Mavic 3 and Mini 3 Pro, plus the Nikon Z7ii. This eruption is a continuation of the eruption in Geldingadalir last year.

    Great photography. But will you be the first to do it in 3D! That would be awesome. The imax people should come out. Watching in 3D with a VR headset would be so good, with good sound quality.

    That volcano is unique because you can get so close to the slow moving lava relatively safely. You should film the plants that grow near the volcano, because cool and unique plants like to grow near volcanoes. Have fun!

    Hi Einar, this is the most amazing footage of this new eruption I've seen!! We have felt the 5.4 earthquake when we were in Keflavik, but early the next morning we had our flight home 😞 Missing your awesome country already, but still 26000 images to process. Anyway, the first days before there was a real path, I believe it was not yet save for inexperienced people to approach the eruption. I've seen people with toddlers attempting it, but I'd say that's absolutely crazy. Much smarter to watch your video's ! And after struggling badly to pronounce (and even recall) the difficult names of Icelandic locations, it was a relief seeing these names are not even trivial to you ;-)

    Very nice video. Thanks for covering this amazing event. In may I went to the Geldingadalir volcano to see the lava from the eruption in 2021. Is this pretty much the same place? It would have been very nice to be able to see it up close. I am flying to Denmark via Reykjavik later this month but we will not have time to make an excursion to the eruption site. Again great video and many thanks.

    Thank you too. The location is the same. You walk past the 2021 craters. The new eruption is aprox 45 min longer walk down to Meradali walley. Total two hours or 7 km walk one way. It is difficult terrain so it is only for experienced hikers.

    Amazing shots and footage! What height did you keep the drone at to avoid overheating or damaging the sensor/lens etc? I’d imagine if it overheats it would simply fall to its doom in the lava!??

  • @GudmannAndGyda

    @GudmannAndGyda

    Жыл бұрын

    Thank you. Overheating is a real danger. A friend of mine who was also flying Mavic 3 damaged the sensor. There is really no way to say what height is safe. It depends on wind, air temperature, speed of the drone, distance into the lava field, it´s size and probably more conditions we are not aware of. In the 2021 eruption I flew down to 30 meters on a Phantom 4 Pro and a filter melted. It was a smaller eruption. In this video I was probably never lower than 80 meters on the Mavic 3 when flying over the lava.. My friend also was at 80-90 meters and still, the sensor melted. Our drones were ok. The Mini 3 shows tiny signs of melting, but amazingly it is ok. This is risky, that´s all I can say. It is safer to stay upwind with the drone, keep it on the wind side of the lava field and not fly over the lava, unless the wind is helping with taking the heat away from the drone and fly high. The problem with flying high are the planes and the helicopters. They fly constantly - some of them lower than 120 meters. Therefore I found it important to see the drone at all times.

    Hi - sorry to say, but the eruption is probably over. Regarding height - it depends on many factors. The scale of the activity, how much lava is there, wind and wind direction.

    The eruption in 2021 lasted for 183 days. This eruption is claimed to be 5-10 times bigger. There is really no way to be sure about anything related to volcanoes, but I would be my money on this one lasting for at least a few months.

    Lens choice is personal. We went there with only two lenses, 24-70 and 24-120. Plus the drones. 300 would be great for closeups, just keep in mind the heat takes everything out of focus. Shooting from above reduces the heat problem.
