*** UPDATE*** I had my facts wrong. The 5D was not, in fact, the first Canon digital. More like the third or something. But it is the first full frame for the enthusiast market, so still works for our purposes.

@@cjmpaja Yep, Canon's first commercially available DSLR. No RAW, Crop Sensor, but it was still a great rig until the 1D and 5D's were introduced a few years later.

You're still wrong like the 5D was the third generation of dslr from Canon, the first being the Kodak Canons in the 90s, and the second being the digic 1 generation cameras of which there are more than a few.

@@Spartan9567 If you are referencing the DCS 560 series en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kodak_DCS#/media/File:Kodak_DCS_560_Front.jpg perhaps, but they were not really "commercially" available for the general public use. I played around with one when I was shooting for AP, heavy, bulky, not a rig that was a lot of fun to tote around. Never mind the $25k price tag.

This lady made my day because she was practicing ASL Fingerspelling! I am deaf and a photographer! 😁

The good thing about film cameras: The results depends on the film and the lens - the rest are just features. EOS-1v (no D !), EOS Elan , Rebel or any other EOS will just give the same results with this lens and this film. Digital is a different story, as the sensors underwent a huge development.

I have decades of experience as a commercial photographer. I graduated with honors first in my class from UofK's program in 1986. I used 4/5 and 8/10 view cameras, medium format, and 35mm. extensively. in the 90s I went digital and you are exactly right, it depends on the film and the lab processing if the film is negative the printing is thrown into the mix. Digital only equaled film in my opinion around 2015.

There’s something inescapable about pictures on 35mm. They have a mood that just says film to me. Digital is nice and accurate but it’s not the same. I can’t choose. I love them both and both of you took great pictures 👍

@@bngr_bngr a very good friend of mine who I respect greatly and only shoots film said recently about the cost - that it is his art form and he and others are prepared to pay for it despite the current increase which surprisingly is not far off what it used to be (I think he found it was about 10% higher than the cost of living here) but the fact that it is an old format and still supported is a price he and others are prepared to pay. However he wouldn’t shoot 40 rolls which I would consider excessive to the average photographer. Thanks for the reply after such a long time. Best wishes

Back in the late 80s/early 90s when the first ever digital cameras were coming out, the only advantage to them was viewing your pictures instantly. Film, on the other hand had quality that was MILES ahead of the digital cameras of that time. Nowadays, the reason film still has it's place in photography is the nostalgic mood film cameras create. While film cameras are well obsolete, they still can shoot really beautiful picures.

Film is only obsolete in terms of inconvenience and sensitivity. For low-light and travel etc digital is obviously far and away the winner, but film still wins for resolution. No digital camera to this day has held a candle to the resolving power of large format film, even just 4x5.

That is not the only reason to shoot film. I prefer the workflow and I think my slides on a light able look better than digital.

I still use a 5D classic as my main digital camera. Love the colors, it's super strong color filter array compared to modern digital cameras give it a unique look. the colors are bold, giving excellent color separations. I've done a few gallery shows with this camera, it still delivers.

I found the exact same thing when I had the 5Dc. I wonder if there’s some sort of profile I could shoot in to replicate that in my newer cameras.

Ahhh. The Canon 50 1.4 was my first lens and probably my favorite 50mm ever.

4:08 Now try to imagine having to lug 3 of those monsters around all day, as well as a shoulder (Domke) bag with a ton of gear. No one used 'backpacks' in the 80s and 90s. I was a wire service shooter for almost 25 years, thank God for Mirrorless.....

Fun video! The professional EOS-1 deserved a pro film (such as 400H). That would’ve made a more fair comparison IMO.

Amazing video. This cemented my conclusion on the whole Film vs Digital thing. THEY ARE BOTH AWESOME! The music, the shots, that top view of one of the graves where the detail of the wood texture is so vivid, the shot of the bike so wonderfully soft, this is an example of great content. Thank you for posting this I no longer have this urgency to take sides. This has been a refreshing video to watch. Thanks again for posting this!

I’m surprised at how good all the images were especially out of the first full frame digital camera!

Having watched this again 2yrs on, I'm amused by Denaes comments on the size and weight of the EOS1. I love the way it's so balanced, especially with something like a 200mm f1.8, 2.8 or even my 35-350mm L. I still think the 5d also holds up well today, and it's still my favourite camera even with its limitations. Speaking of limitations, my slightly older (first DSLR) Canon 10d is still going strong as the day it was bought.

Always love Denae's photos the most, and Andrew's the 2nd most😁

No. 8, 18, 20 were my top picks but final vote goes to #8. It's almost unfair pitting film v. Minimally edited Digital shots. Love these duels

Awesome video!!! I like the film look colors for some reason. It seems to make an impact to my emotions more. But Andrew's photos were really nice and good composition.

I just picked up a 1V from KEH and paired it with a Tamron SP 90mm macro lens, so far I have about 10 rolls of Fuji superia through it and this camera is a monster! The cooler Fuji film looks stunning for macros and the camera works with all of the newer EF lenses with image stabilization perfectly. I will highly recommend KEH for your gear, I couldn't be happier with this setup

Hi Andrew, Few days back I had post a comment on your vintage lens video for a buying guide video. I know you are busy with photoshoots, family etc. but i really need your guidance here. I have ordered fuji xt30 and its going to arrive on 8th august approx. i was quite sure about the fuji xt30 with 16mm f1.4 and 56mm f1.2 untill i saw videos on sony a6400. I m mainly into photography and have no interest in vlogging or videography. My main concerns are image quality, ergonomics (comfortable to handle), ease of use. Plus the camera and lens combination that i have been planning is expensive on fujifilm side compared to sonya6400+sigma 1.6mm f1.4 and sigma 56mm f1.4. I would really appreciate it if you please help me on this as soon as you can. Thank you so much Andrew

I freaking love your photo duels!!! It’s always hard to pick just one, so here are a few of my top picks, 5, 7, 9, 10, 17. My runner up, almost the best shot is image 20, but the clear winner by a small margin is image 24. I think it’d be cool to do this idea again with nikons first digital and last film camera. Maybe it would be dumb because it’s the same thing you just did, but I think it’d be cool. As someone who knows very little about film, are you able to tell me why the film images were so green? Is that a quality of the film chosen or part of the developing process?

If you watch my color film comparison I speak more to this. The Fuji films have a green cast due to an extra cyan layer on the emulsion

5D collors are just amazing...

My first digital was a Nikon D1 ... It still feels more "professional" than anything I've had since. ha ha. It was based on their F5 film camera. Those last film cameras were so nice ... Fun duel, and a fun idea!

Are all these elements stage for photophers. Or is really an abandoned place?

I still own both these cameras :-) The original 5D is possibly the closest thing to film photography you can get with a digital SLR camera. I'll never sell any of them. Both extremely enjoyable and capable cameras.

The very last Canon camera that I felt really excited about was the EOS 3. Loved mine.

The Canon D30 was the first digital camera. The Canon EOS 1D original was the first professional grade digital slr camera. I have the Canon EOS 1Ds Mk II, the second generation full frame professional Digital SLR.

I like what you did in this video. Now I am inspired to take this to my local photo club and offer a challenge between a digital and film camera. I have a few film and digital cameras, and there are some members in our club that have never shot film. I have a 5D and EOS-1N and the lenses to work on them. To make things a little more fun the digital camera would be set up with the LCD blanked out. Also, a set number of exposures of 36 frames will be set on a controlled shot. Then another challenge with the same setup with each participant doing a freelance shoot. No one would be able to see the images until the film is developed and scanned. I have all of the resources, cameras, film, development chemicals, and tanks to get it done. Thanks for a great idea and keep it coming.

I liked #10 by Andrew, the random angles of the wooden slats and peeling red paint on the bed of the white truck. #17 by Andrew had potential with the 1972 or 1973 rusted out Ford LTD Brougham with vinyl roof and porthole windows on the side and reminds me of the '74 Brougham I had with an avocado body and black vinyl but without the portholes. It was a living room on wheels and gas was cheap then.

Interesting comparison. I am getting a 5d and I would also like to have a capable film body I can take on shoots. I love my Minolta Maxxum 9 but it would be nice to use the same glass on each body.

#5 has to my fav. It'd be interesting to see this comparison being done with slide film, I believe slide film is closest to digital in characteristics, especially in its flexibility (or lack thereof).

F for Denae's last roll, the location was great imo, like Andrew's photos from it. But since they're not in the poll, I vote for 13, which would've been even better without that green tint.

Green tint: comes with Fuji Superia 400. It's not our favorite either. Not sure why we didn't shoot with other films we had.

If I remember right, the first prosumer was the D30 and it was 3.2 megapixels. The D60 followed, then they went to number first, and I got the 10D. The Rebel came out about the same time as well as the first consumer model. I was blown away when I saw the first images compared to point and shoot cameras.

Nice duel 🤺 once again, my vote will be for #17 by Andrew. 👍🏽

My favorite image was #5 by denae, because of the light in the "hairs" of the caterpillar. You both are doing great 👍🏼

Canon D30 is the first true DSLR from Canon that did not use the Kodak digital back. It came out in May of 2000 and was genuinely very impressive for its time. Very small body, very well designed and user friendly

I liked the cemetery shots. #20 was my fav. Great duel...from a great duo.

#17 was my favourite by far

Man, i love the 5D. Such a classic camera, i still regret selling it a year ago. The images really were something special

#24 was my favorite, but I also liked #12.

This duel is a little bit not fair, because of used film. I think Kodak should be better as it has less distracting color cast, at least compared to images from 5d. Anyway, great duel, and great photos. I’ll vote for film. But to be honest, I love film, and I’m using only film right now, but I owned around 12 digital cameras in my life and 5D is only one I really miss. I used it with Carl Zeiss Jena 35/2.4 and it was a real joy to work with it. I shouldn’t sell it :(

The color cast is not really a characteristic of the film. Most likely the scanning, and could certainly be corrected in post. Also, there was no true black point on the film shots. Again, due to the scanning and easily correctable in post. I love film, but a lot of what people perceive as the “film look” is just the result of poor scanning and post processing technique (unless, of course, it was intended to look that way). Nonetheless, beautiful shots and a very nice video.

It is difficult to find a clear winner. 22 and 24 are my favorites.

The very first dslr that canon themselves built was the Eos D30. I went out and bought one just for fun and actually love using it still. Obviously with 3 focus points and just over 3 megapixels, it isnt pro level. But still gets some great images and makes a nice backup!

#20 takes it for me this time around. Great idea for a duel, awesome location with two of the nicest people on YT. 👍

I vote for #20, nice composition and use of selective focus. Images from the Canon 5D have a unique look, especially with the 50 mm f 1.4. A used Canon 5D can often be found for $300. Great video.

I own two of Canon's former flagship film cameras, the EOS 1N and the EOS 1V, and continue to use them to this very day. When time is not an issue for presenting images, they are my cameras of choice. I lament that Fujifilm no longer produces Astia film, my favorite, so I now use Provia. Hey guys, great video. Opening scene was pretty funny! It's the Canon EOS V 1D that I have been wanting to finish up my 35mm film camera collection! Andrew's #17 would have won but the perspective from the video capture showing off the background silhouette of the red mountain side and the vehicle would have been amazing triple threat combo! Foreground, mid ground and background all in one shot! Denae's #19 was a tough decision as I would have chosen it to be the winner but because of the front tire being cut off in the composition, Andrew #20 close up and bokeh headstone photo was the winner for me! Great job guys! I would suggest looking out for Satan's lizards without arms out there! You can never be too careful! Hahahaha!

I'm going to vote for #11 and #25, both because they show a number of different stories ^_^

The 5D was my 2nd DSLR after the original Digital Rebel. I loved that camera. The dynamic range was crap compared to today, but the big ole pixels due to the 12MP pixel count gave it something special. I recently picked up a mint Elan 7N, which one of the last film cameras, for only $90 from KEH. I've been enjoying it.

Love this idea. I have a couple friends who still shoot jobs with the OG 5D. P.S. I vote for #17

Great Video. You can clearly see the clean digital files and the grainy analog scans. Althoug the analog pictures have their own warm, grainy and deep charme, both - digital and analog - agre great. Well done Denae & Andrew! How‘s that voting working? Doing it for the first time :)

Pretty sure Canons first digital was the 1Ds. I had it. Later I bought a 5D as backup. I recently bought a 1V, last prosumer film, to share lenses.

For prosumer the first canon dslr was the 10D which went through a couple versions along with the digital rebel before the 5D. The 5d was actually quite modern compared to the many canon dslr’s before it

I bought my Canon D30 in 2000, 5D in 2005 and 5D Mk II in 2009. The 1Ds was released in 24 September 2002 and the 10D/D60 in 27 February 2003.

I use a Canon EOS 1N RS and a 5D original ... 5D you need to use RAW for best results... crank up contrast and sharpness ..My best pictures are from the EOS 1N RS

I couldn't get past the film versus digital. To my surprise, I much preferred the digital. The color in the film shots was so distracting that I loved getting back to the digital shots. This is making me rethink my efforts this year to use more color film. Since I don't watch these with pencil in hand, it's hard to remember photo numbers, but I think my favorites were a truck and a grave, 11 and 20?

I wonder if something was off in the chemistry during the development of the negatives. There seems to be excess green coloring throughout which I've seen happen with Superia 400 when I've shot it in the past. I'm surprised they didn't go with a 200 speed film or slower for the outdoor shooting, but Superia 400 is still somewhat relatively easy to find in most stores.

Hey Adam. Denae chose the Superia because I grabbed it from the drug store on the way and my only other film with me was slide film, which she was intimidated by (with slide film, you have to nail exposure). Neither of us love Superia. It has an extra cyan layer in the emulsion (like several Fuji films), which gives it that greenish overtone.

8, 19, 22 would have been real great with a post colour correction to take that green shift out, but I just really prefer the first gen Canon tone curve here, every time. The cyan skies are a little horrible, but with the dynamic range of a vegetable, I guess you don't see them when you don't want to. I think their hue choices were more obvious back then.

The original 5D is still my favorite next to the X100f.
