Hi Ben, have been using a 5D Classic for 8 years. Very happy with it, only major bugbear is dust on the sensor, they seem to attract a lot of it. So don't change lenses often, usually have the 40mm/f2.8 pancake on it. Excellent source of 5D C info on KZread is Richard Barley Photography, UK Wedding photographer who has been using the original 5D since 2005. Lots of videos on how he uses it and the custom functions available.

Thanks Dan. If I was still teaching photo school these days (long retired) I would consider the 5D Classic as the camera I would require new students to learn on. Very difficult to hide your shortcomings with a 5D.

I bought my 5D classic about 5 weeks ago now. I’ve been wanting a full frame for a while and once I read about this camera from reviews and other’s experiences I was sold. I found the perfect package: camera, 50 1.4, grip, two batteries, and sd card for $440. I’m big on film photography and enjoy how it captures colors as well. Just like you said it’s been a learning experience especially with how you gotta sacrifice on what you want to be dark and light. I’ve hardly used my Fuji XPro3 since getting it. I’m wanting to get a 35 f2 eventually, it’s an awesome camera!

canon 5d 12.8 is a gem. The color straight out of the camera is beautiful. when I did own it, it was rare that I did any editing.

I have had the The 5DC for a little over the year now. Paired with the 40mm f/2.8 pancake is a wonderful kit!

I am always happy to see there continues to be more 5D love vids posted as time goes on. You had some great street examples in this video as well as your other ones. One thing I was gonna note though, it kind of negates the complaint for dynamic range when you mention in the beginning of the video you are shooting jpgs, DR with jpgs is going to be lower than raw files on any camera. If you like the look of the jpg SOOC, why not just shoot raw then add the native color profile you picked back to the image in Lightroom? That's my basic workflow to get the most out of the 5D images. I also highly recommend the 40mm pancake lens as it always gets mentioned for a reason! Great content!

Thanks dude! You're absolutely correct about the files, I do shoot RAW + JPEG and sometimes work with the RAWs in those situations but I was more referring to the advancements in sensors. I guess I'm saying that you can't save underexposed images to the same level as a modern camera. I've been wanting to try the 40mm for ages, and will need to look into picking one up!!

I have a 70D and about two years back I bought a 5D C. Since then I have reached out to the 5D more than the 70. I use the 50 1.8 STM , 28-75 2.8 Tamaron, 50 1.4 Asahi Super Takumar with this. The colors that this camera gives is mind blowing. It’s true that you don’t need much post work with this one.

If you get a chance to pick up a Super-Tak 55 1.8... i think it's a magical little lens that i've come to (usually) prefer over my radioactive 1.4. The 150 f4 is also bargain goodness. (I'm shooting these on an 8MP Oly e-300, but only in good light).

I enjoyed your post. Keep up the good work. I picket up my 5d classic about 7 month ago and I love it. I also have a 90d (a beast of a camera) and I find that I grab the 5d as much as the 90d. I paired my 5d with a 40mm f/2.8 pancake and Nifty Fifty. I also bought a 28-135mm, works great together. Keep the videos coming.

Hi Ben, nice streetphotography snaps. I bought the 5 Classic last year coupled with a 40mm 2.8 which is ideal for carrying it the whole day. Like you I am a big fan of the sooc colors. Can recommend Martin Castein‘s and Richard Barley‘s channel to get the most out of it. Especially Richard‘s approach to use it manually and just use the histogram changed my workflow dramatically and I am taking Pictures for more than 35 years now. Keep up your good work. 😁

Thank you so much Byron and I could not agree more! We all pay too much attention to gear and the desire to have the latest and greatest but I find taking a step back and using "outdated" gear can really improve your photography.

Love my 5D with the nifty 50. After seeing the first lot of images on the pc I can see why there is a lot of hype around this camera. It's fun, simple, minimal function controls and, on a low budget, is a great way to experiment with a full frame sensor.

Try the 1ds mkII - You will be amazed!

I have one too, don’t need anything else (apart from my Minolta film cameras of course). Nothing beats the 5D for portrait and street, and you can get decent landscapes too.

the first coming here...jeje. From Córdoba, Argentina. I buy a 5dmkii by the same idea, the analog film price. The image quality is pretty good. But i miss the wind lever and the manual focus. Shoot vintage lenses without focus assistance is annoying. I preffer mirrorles to shoot vintage. The big form factor is also a contra in street, everybody realize im shooting. I have a sony A5100 and is much more ninja camera. But apsc dont get the boke. Great videos! Sorry my english

Thanks for commenting from Argentina! I agree focusing on a DSLR isn't the best experience but the 28mm I mentioned is easy to zone focus but it is easier on a mirrorless camera for sure. Love the Ninja setup dude!

I accidentally bought the classic instead of the mark 3 ,when I was so deep in eBay and the likes that I did not pay enough attention anymore except to the price 😂 I'm glad I found your video as I was unsure whether to try to return it or to keep it. Now I'm definitely gonna try it out! Thank you and keep it up!

I got a bargain one. Only thing is batteries don't hold a charge if you haven't used the camera in a few days and the take ages to charge. Great video again.

Great video mate. I use on and my Sony A7R2 has been collecting dust for the last 12 months. I lug around it paired with my 24-105 L and have no need to go to the gym now. 😂. Best image quality in an over hyped digital world this renders such and old school look. I managed to buy Canons display camera which I have stored so history is preserved. The one I use is excellent as well.

It’s cool to see another photographers work in sydney. Im hoping to get one at some point to use my M42 lenses on in a way that looks less silly (compared to mirrorless) along with being a way to slow me down even more as a photographer.

The EOS 5D classic has everything you need. Focus Peaking and the other Stuff are nice to have...but when you really want to lern how to take a unique Picture, this is your Tool of choice. I have a 5D with a 50mm F1.8 STM and when i compare it to my Alpha 7Dii with 50mm lens and the pics which were created with her...then i have to say that the look of the 5D-pics are unique and timeless!

I picked up the 5D classic a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately the first one was a dud as the rear dial did not work properly, but since I bought it at an online camera store, they replaced it with one that works. Really liking the colors, as I suspected from researching. I bought a new 50 1.8 stm that works well, and also picked up a Sigma 20-40 2.8 which I think will be nice for landscape. It's one of many cameras I own, so not trying to have an exhaustive list of lenses for it. (I also have a Sigma SD14, Nikon D200, Sony A290 (originally got a Konica Minolta 5D for that mount but it was broken upon arrival as they tend to have faulty shutters after all this time, so I gave up and opted for an old Sony ccd a-mount camera instead), Pentax K10D, and a Olympus E-500, all of those being CCD sensor cameras with the exception of the Sigma which has a Foveon sensor of course). The 5D (being a first generation CMOS) holds up well in terms of color reproduction in my book. I also bought a bunch of compact/bridge cameras from various manufacturers with my pocket favorite being the Fuji F40FD. My daily driver, and which I have top notch glass for is a Panasonic S1R, so these other cameras are for fun only.

The problem with these digital cameras is the the electronic components deteriorate, batteries have limited life and plastics turn oily. So enjoy them whilst you can.

Got mine today. I have it's son, the mk 2 and it's grandson the 3. ❤

Thanks for the video. After breaking both a Fujifilm x100t and a Ricoh GRii I ended up with this and have been on a similar journey as you. It's a cheap tank of a camera that can take some manhandling. For a full year I shot only black and white with it and, being used to the film simulations from earlier cameras, I made a simple bnw color preset in camera with increased contrast. I only shoot jpgs. No real complaints about the camera. Not having auto ISO took a while to get used to and one thing I haven't really mastered yet is getting the right exposure. Btw, I hear a lot of people saying that it can't read more than 16 gb on your memory cards but I'm halfway on a 64 gb card as we speak without any issues.

It's the firmware. Latest firmware 1.1.1 enabled 5D Classic to use higher capacity CF Cards. Previous firmware 5D would format larger cards to 8gb.

This is why I still maintain a 40D, for that softer vintage look, especially for high contrast shots where I'll likely edit to monochrome.

Great video, loved your photos around Sydney! I am so can’t decide which 5D to get the C or the MII. I don’t really do video and my interests are in street photography, nature, for this camera maybe landscapes and flowers, mostly macro type stuff. I have a 7D mII for sports and wildlife, mostly birds. I would love anyone’s suggestions or advice between 5D C or MII. Thanks!

It depends on what you're after. If you want something which is more modern and standard with higher resolution than the mark 2 makes more sense. If you want something fun, film like and retro than the classic is better If it's for fun, the classic but if it's for versatility than the mark 2

Odd, too me any lens lighter than 500g would make it feel a bit odd. I would actually caution buyers of this camera. If you'll be shooting with fast lenses with shallow depth of field you will seemingly often run into back focusing issues with these cameras. It seems you've lucked out in this regard. I have two bodies which both suffer from this issue. It makes portraits quite hard as a few centimeter of back focus will throw the whole image off. Sending it in to canon costs you about 100 bucks/pounds for the camera and another 100 per lens.

Well done, Dan expressing your viewpoint and artistry. I shoot Nikon, but in the last 6 months it seems there has been a lot more recent reviews of both the 5D classic and the Nikon D700. The D700 goes through this yearly "is it still the best relevant in 202..." fill in the year, video phase - as I'm sure the Canon 5D classic does. I enjoyed seeing your images, and nice job on that and the video summary of your experience. Quick Question to You (and then quick observation): From your experience, is the "classic" Canon color of this sensor only seen when using a certain jpg profile? Do you use your RAW files at all? Just curious. Observation: It appears to me, from what people say about the 5D Classic, that it is a camera for a slightly more experienced photographer. Let me quickly explain: Top dancers often go to beginner workshops when they are taught by a master - because they are looking for both how to teach and a rare gold nugget of advice that the beginner will hear, but not understand at the time. The advanced dancer already understands the basics, so they hear to gold nugget for what it is. If you are an experienced photographer, your experience with the Canon 5D (or 6D for that matter) is likely to be a bit more fulfilling. You learn to accept the limitations, but you also know how to get the most out of them. In short, you appreciate a classic camera for the time, era, and look of what it gives you - and what "modern" lenses and mirrorless bodies may lack. In my short venture into photography, I see an obsession with lens sharpness, megapixels, frame rates - but what has been lost, in my opinion - is what matters. Character, substance, and story. Beginner dancers often become obsessed with more choreography, patterns, and cool tricks - only to lose the character of the dance itself.

I love you videos. I too am a 5D lover. i have quick question, how many images do u get from a single charge? i have 3 batteries and none of them give me more then 70-100 images

I have a 5D too, and certainly get more than 250 pictures on one charge. I use both original Canon and after market batteries.

Is there a lot of difference color wise compared to the 5D ii?

Make sure it has the last firmware version on it, otherwise it won't like larger CF cards when you use them and you may find you will lose images, so make sure the firmware is updated. What has been your experience with manual lenses and getting accurate focus? I am curious about that and adapters. Best wishes! Nice video.

That was the first thing I did so I could use a 32gb card! It's really dependent on the lens choice. The 28mm I referred to works really well because its got a shot focus throw + has a wider focal length so focus is easier to get When I used the 135mm I really had to slow it down and make sure the shot was in focus, not ideal for street shooting If you don't mind slowing down, they work.pretty well - just make sure to buy an adapter with the AF confirmation chip

@@danthe_cameraman Interesting. In the old days we used to just set the aperture and shutter speed so we had it all pre-focused for a desired DOF. You were stuck with one ASA though. Probably why Tri x was popular. Sharpness of the image was not such a clinical thing then, and that lack of sharpness was quite acceptable, even normative. Add to that camera shake. I was always jealous of guys who got a sharp shot of indoor basketball at the whoop or whatever, skill was a "thing".

Using a 5D is cool! But using it with old MF non EF glass is a pain in the ass. You are much better off getting a used Sony A7 or A7II*, bit more expensive but mirrorless is much more convenient with manual focus manual aperture lenses (and adaptable lenses), add more choice of adapters. The 5D is nice with EF glass. *or any first gen FF Nikon or Canon.

Do you notice any vignetting in the viewfinder with the 50. 1.8?

I love the image out of my 5D Classic but there are 2 things that bug me a lot. The focus doesn't work as I want it to be. There are too much out of focus pictues. Even with static shots. 2nd problem is that the jpgs are a little too soft. The raw is sharp but the jpg isn't anymore. I still have to test if the focus problem is a lens thing or camera thing.

@@danthe_cameraman that’s what I think as well. But the amount of misfocused pictures is a little bit too high in my opinion :( I don’t trust it tbh. I’ve got the first gen 70-200 f4. Great lens. Reasonably sharp but if you shoot birds… Better don’t zoom at 100%. BUT on the other side. I already took many awesome pictures with it and the image quality is just 🥰 Edited and unedited

No problems on mine. There is no micro adjustment feature so the lenses have to not need any focus adjustment. Also you can up the sharpness on the color profile. I use neutral with 2+ sharpness.

@@samuelchoi-qo7oc just because just because the camera doesn’t have micro adjustments doesn’t mean the lenses don’t have to be adjusted. If you are a pro you get every lens with your body calibrated at Canon. The missed focus problem isn’t micro adjustment worthy tho. :D It’s far off. 😂

If Canon put 2 card slots and sell the same camera without any other changes for $2000, I'd buy two... no questions asked.... (Auto iso would be a bonus)

There's one thing here I see that the camera won't do for you & that's the eye. You my friend, have the eye to see an image where someone else won't & that right there is something you can't buy or teach.

I don't get the use of adapted on a 5d, just use the cheap and readily available EF mount lenses. The 5d isn't that big compared to the rapidly expanding mirrorless bodies and lenses (unless you shoot M43 or Leicas / rangefinders etc) Try an EOS1 or F1 with drive / booster, and then complain about the size. I'm gkad to say I've owned my 5d Mk1 since new, and now have a low shutter count 5d Mk2 which came with a 100-400mm for zero ££££s due to and easily sorted error code message 😀

Can you CREDIT the music that you've used ---- like the jazz lounge audio with vibraphone and list on this page, please. R :*)

I use this camera all the time for street photography. (I actually have two!) @robin.suth I use it with a sling-type strap that bolts into the tripod screw. This way it's really unobtrusive and out of the way until you need it. I also use the 40mm canon 2.8 pancake lens. Very small package and really quick focusing.
