Especially since he was one of the few 5 star generals. 5 star generals are only around during times of war. When WW2 ended he was demoted back to a 4 star.

But I tend to imagine in my mind of that skit that Conan O'Brien made where Trump is randomly calling Barack for advice about how being President works and he just randomly says weird stuff making Barack just hang up in disbelief.

You can tell Kennedy was legitimately concerned about the situation and wanted Eisenhower's counsel about his course of action. It is so refreshing to hear Eisenhower offer his support while urging Kennedy to be cautious. The amount of respect here is something that the current American political landscape hasn't seen for quite some time.

Too bad Kennedy didn’t follow Ike’s advice to avoid the Bay of Pigs invasion debacle. Of course, Ike was had his own issues with illegally overthrowing other foreign leaders who weren’t interested in having the US meddle in their affairs at the behest of corporate or military industrial complex players.

I am genuinely surprised how calm and composed both of these men are in one of the worst crisis n human history. I guess that’s why they are the men that they are.

Russia is now fighting for the last piece of influence in Europe. Look at how much influence they've lost since the USSR collapse. Yet the west is fucking too persistent... they want Ukraine in NATO and that's actually a massively dangerous wish. To blame is a lot of people, both Russian and American. But I think that NATO should have stopped expansion after the collapse of USSR. It was to embarrassing when Putin advocated for world peace and NATO kinda fooled him by expanding even more and stealing Russian influence in Eastern Europe. What hasn't happened will surely happen unless a good US president appears again. Someone who'll actually understand Russia's desire for influence in Eastern Europe.

It’s an amazing contrast of two leaders. 20 years before this, Kennedy was a young 1st Lt. in the US Navy, and 5 Star General of the Army Eisenhower was the Supreme Allied Commander against Germany. Both became the Commander in Chief and I’m beyond impressed with the wisdom and humility Kennedy possessed to draw upon the council of General Eisenhower. Eisenhower was magnificent providing Kennedy with a few extra considerations while supporting Kennedy’s course of action, and showed pure courtesy and respect to the sitting President. Duty and Service at the highest level is what we got to listen in on.

I guarded the Fulda Gap for 30 months...it was a time when the cold war was peaking!....I missed my family but learned that friends akeep you safe....I sure did make friends and never was afraid of a soviet or eastern bloc invasion...whatever happens will Happen!,,,thankfully Germany is now one...troops came home, but my memories of my time there will never be forgotten!

I was a 5 year old boy living in Tucson, Arizona when this phone call was happening!! Two great men, both had served in our military, so did my Dad and myself. this is how you learn to respect others more senior in rank, age and position!!

The mutual respect of these two presidents shows their interest of protecting America was above the political rivalry, which is sorely needed today.

First off, an amazing discourse between two national leaders. Blunt, respectful and concise. Any senior executive's time is concise. Literally to the minute. President Kennedy afforded his predecessor the appropriate courtesy, General. After office, George Washington insisted on being referred to as General Washington, vice Mr. President; after his term this was the custom for military office holders. Also, President Kennedy was asking advice from the former Commander of Allied Forces for the European Theater. All together, both men were gracious, respectful and gentlemanly. I pray our nation returns to this decorum, respect for opposing views.

But JFK was under no obligation to speak with him at all. The fact he did, and more than once! Showed how much he respected Ike, and valued his council. The fact Ike was quick to help showed he was still serving the country he loved. And JFK was a CMH recepient, Ike respected everyone who served during the War, but especially those who went above and beyond what was expected of them. It is safe to say they respected one another.

I’ve consumed just about every bit of JFK history I could over the years. I’ve never heard this. It’s interesting to hear how he actually talks rather than just his speeches, written and delivered. This was two men having a conversation. Fascinating to be sure.

We then got a message, uh, a public one, in which he said he would do that if we withdrew our missiles from Turkey. We then, as you know, issued a statement that we couldn't get into that deal. So uhh, we then got this message this morning, so we now have to wait to see how it unfolds, and there's a good deal of complexities to it, uhh if the uhh, withdraw of these missiles, technicians, and the cessation of subversive activity by them, well we just have to set up satisfactory procedures to determine whether these actions will be carried out. So I think that if we can do that, we may find our interests advanced, even though it may be only more one chapter in a rather long story, as far as Cuba's concerned. E: Of course, uhh, Mr. President, did he uhh [unintelligible, likely something about other demands/requests from Soviets] K: No uhh, except that we're not going to invade Cuba. E: Yes. The relationship between the state and the military in the US is similar to the relationship between the Roman legions and the Roman government during the last days of the Republic.

There's only one word: fascinating. I was born in '58, and IMO these were the two greatest presidents in my lifetime. So, as a conscious , self-aware human being, I have never seen leadership even close to either one of these guys. And if you go back 15, 20 years from this date, you had FDR or Truman. Where is the leadership now?

John F. Kennedy was a smart leader, knowing who to ask for guidance. Ike was the best help possible. Two great leader's.

Truman was president when I was born.

Fascinating. I got the impression of mutual respect from each man in the way they address each other as Mr. President and General. Eisenhower was obviously older yet still called the president Mr. President and the president still called Eisenhower General despite him having been retired for many years.

These men between them won a world war and prevented one. Notice there was no small talk and it was over in a few minutes. And they both spoke in coherent sentences! Those were the days...

"Thank you very much, sir!" The manner in which GEN Eisenhower, a former 2-term president, signs off to his successor is simply a marvel of courtesy & respect -- which, regrettably, we have lost in the 21st century.

General of the Army Eisenhower had been reinstated to being listed as Active Service by President Kennedy by this time. I imagine it was done to make it easier to discuss classified and military matters with each other. This also means that President Kennedy is General Eisenhower’s Commander-in-Chief hence the “Sir”. Though it’s obvious both men held each other in such high regard that the rank was not a prerequisite for the respect given.

I have been fascinated by JFK ever since reading a very detailed book on his life. And what a life he had. I mean the Kennedy dynasty was something to speak about.

Eisenhower: « knowing we would keep our word ». Back in those days, our leaders expected this was something we would do as a matter of principle.

It would happen now, most of modern political divide is a show to prevent people switching parties. You can thank social media. When it comes to large geopolitical issues, both sides almost always completely agree. They follow the neoliberal geopolitical guidestones that were laid out long ago, arguably right after WW2. Perfect example of this is support for Taiwan and Pelosi’s recent visit to the island. Same thing happened during the gulf war, 911, Libya, etc. there is a reason US hegemony lasted this long, an unspoken agreement between both parties that began almost a century ago.

I don't think many Americans really know how little impact the USA had on a pure military scale regarding world war II in Europe. Sure they provided a lot of supplies to the UK, but they "only" lost about 49.000 troops in Europe, all of whom were military personnel. Compare that to the total death toll in Europe alone during that war, which was around 15-20 million people. So the USA's losses were "only" around 0.25%. And the foreign aid was mostly to the UK, who paid back all those loans. The USSR received almost nothing, despite popular belief.

Now despite popular belief, the USSR actually produced the overwhelming majority of their war equipment themselves. Depending on the year, it's anywhere from 99-95% produced by themselves. They had a few problems with certain high end products, which they bought or received from overseas. I never said the USSR would've destroyed Germany on their own, but with Britain involved they probably would, like I said America didn't have a major impact in the European war. Mind you, lend-lease does not count as a direct impact, that's just an investment. The UK paid all their world war 2 loans back, I think they made their last payment in 2004. Now this is important to distinguish, because Germany wouldn't have been able to produce what they did without the trade with other nations like Spain, Italy, Romania, Hungary, Sweden, ... Not to mention that Spain had multiple divisions as "volunteers" in the eastern front, despite being "neutral". And Romania, hungary and Italy were all also fighting on the eastern front. So what I'm saying is that there wouldn't have been much difference if the USA wasn't directly involved in the European war. The impact from the USA came mostly in the pacific, and shortened the war with the landing in Normandy. But by 1944 the Germans wouldn't have been able to hold back the USSR and invasions/trade interdiction from the UK. One can not forget how much problems the UK had caused in Africa, which was already dominated by the allies, cutting off essential oil and rubber resources from the German war machine.

I hope that everybody realised the significance of the call- what a scary time. These men were real men, I'm in awe.

All while he was winning by a landslide in all the polls prior to Watergate, further entrenching just how needlessly paranoid the man was. JFK was a party animal, adulterer, and well-known elite. Johnson was a petty womanizer, used intimidation to win votes, and needlessly escalated Vietnam then placed arbitrary limits on it making the war 200x worse than it needed to be for everyone involved. Presidents aren't patriots or monsters. They're humans. They're nothing to look up to, as power tends to corrupt and emphasize further just how depraved and inept someone is.

Jfk was a young officer during the war. He was showing respect and I believe a mindset. I'm glad he was around to give confidence and guidance during the Cuban missile crisis.

The respect such gentleman had for each other then, we need more of that.

Sounds like Ike was the strategic thinker asking the what if’s, and JFK was more of a “ big picture” type of guy.

@@Michael15_25 could be the desire to try something new. For the GOP at least, Bush from 2001 to 2008, was considered a bit of a failure following Iraq, Afghanistan, and the economy. Then the Obama years occurred and many who were or leaned to the Republicans sought a change. And why not a change as a outsider such as Trump? They believed it would be a good thing having a outsider come to the white house,one not afraid to make controversy and speak his mind. Of course, Trump himself has only been a business man, unlike Obama and a number of other presidents who have served in the arm forces. Not to mention those who had a education in politics and affairs of state. The system in place worked, ultimately, and that was allowing such a man to become a nominee despite what most people thought about him. Matters are made worse when you have such a figure spouting off strong and harsh words at the state of things, and a population who are desperate enough for change and lack the understanding of the greater state of things, you end up with a outsider like Trump winning.

@@PhoenixFires Eisenhower did not grow up in wealth, far from it. Ike's "wealth" would have come from post-war positions on boards, or actual jobs. His Army retirement would not be enough to be considered "wealth". Kennedy was quite different, he was wealthy by any standard.

Presidents and their predecessors are the most exclusive commodities in or out of government because, in a real sense, an ex-president is a walking repository of secrets and insights that no one else collectively possesses. Especially since the Cold War, they have consulted each other. That retirement perk of continued Secret Service protection isn't just a governmental gesture of appreciation. It's to ensure that all those secrets -- and the human vessel carrying them -- don't fall into the wrong hands. That's a lot of sensitive data circulating out there, especially today when it's multiplied by 5. A practical president avails himself of that trove of information when needed. Emphasis on "practical."

JFK was as presidential as it gets. One thing he did that I love him for is open up public school gyms during the summer for local youth. Our school had a beautiful wooden floor gym and as a teenager I was addicted to basketball. I spent the whole summer in that gym. It was a Heaven on Earth for me.

Two high caliber world leaders, even with their different political opinions able to come together in respect and out of mutual concern for the country and the world. Looking at the current state of the country it’s hard not to believe as my dad used to say that the “country has gone to hell in a hand basket”.

Eisenhower would have invaded Cuba if he were president and the Soviet Union would have fired their tactical nukes that we didn’t know about. JFK was able to push back the war mongers.

Wow. It’s like going back in time and listening in to Kennedy and Eisenhower like we’re in the same room.

People were so civil then.

The level of respect he has for Ike is something else. He barely beat Ike’s VP to win the presidency. This was an era of decorum and statesmanship. It’s also commendable that JFK made a point to consult Eisenhower in this moment. You can see that he wanted all opinions and all viewpoints. Smart leader.

I'm Mexican so it wouldn't be that usual for a non-American to listen to this kind of sound archivos, however I find it so wholesome for a current President to seek for advice on his predecessor corteously, without any partisan animosity. P.D. I love the contrast between the strong Bostonian accent of Kennedy and Einsenhower's melodic Southern rhythm when talking over the phone.

Cks57 Youto Both JFK (IMO who cares about his adultery the majority of American President has done it) and IKE are both among my top handful of personal favorite US Presidents ever. And this is coming from a Generation X era kid not yet alive when these 2 great leaders headed the entire free world. Great tape of how these men was discussing as “partners” ways out to avoid the closest the world has been to nuclear war. RIP IKE and JFK.

General Eisenhower had a lot to offer the President in this brief conversation and both men understood it's importance. The General kept his answers brief, but thorough, and President Kennedy gave him time to articulate his points without interruption. The General knew all to well the enormous pressure President Kennedy was under and did not wish to waste his time. It's incredible to have this part of our history archived and publicly available.

JFK addresses Eisenhower as “General” because by Act of Congress on March 30, 1961, Eisenhower was restored to active duty at the rank of General of the Army.

Former Lieutenant Jack, USN. getting sage advice and pointed questions from General Ike, former Supreme Allied Commander, Europe. Love it.

I worked on the presidential campaign of General Wesley Clark. I have never met a four-star general, but he had such a presence that one could simply not address them as anything other than general or sir. I also interviewed a two star admiral at the Pentagon and again the man had such a commanding presence that one could not refer to him as anything but Admiral or Sir.
