Phoenix Point Guide: Mutations

Ойындар

Whereas New Jericho and Synedrion turn to titanium, Anu looks to the DNA of the Pandorans for a tool to reshape humanity into a weapon capable of enduring the gathering storm.
In this video I examine the available mutations for your soldiers, talk about the parallel mutagen economy, and discuss the role and potential benefits that come from harnessing mutations on your troops.
While some are pretty ordinary, other mutations offer you the chance to outfit troops to a fantastic standard in a very cost effective way...if you don't mind them sounding a little Alien after a while.

    I remember when the game came out, "mutations" were just armor pieces that you could put on and take off. I'm glad they changed that. On another note, I think they could have made mutations really exciting by giving the player the ability to actually adjust the stats and special effects of a mutation and having the cost adjust accordingly. Then there would be caps of various types in place for each tier.

    So, just an observation and something that is extremely powerful regarding priests. If you run two priest/technician builds in your squads like I do you can maintain indefinite mind control on 2 targets during any mission if you use the willpower regen heads because the cost of maintaining the control is less than what is gained if the two priests stay within range of eachother. This can give you disposable troops and save vast amounts of resources on ammunition and time spent healing.

    Also as a side note, running two priests with this head also allows me to spam Willpower abilities on the rest of my squad such as boom blast or quick aim, as the willpower regained by killing enemies and the passive regen usually outpaces the cost

    You tend to compare the mutegen tree to the cybernetics tree, but remember that cybernetics is DLC, while mutagens is vanilla. Other notes I missed in this video: when you use mutations, you cannot use various equipment anymore on your soldiers, like mounted weapons and mist- and goorepellers. For that only most mutations aren't worth it imo. Fun detail about those agile legs: when applied. a soldier can jump to some lower platforms which otherwise require a ladder. For me the frenzy head is the best choice, and the main reason I have priests at all (Dual classed with assault). It's next to OP, it makes a lot of difference what can and can't be done in one turn.

    I take your point, but I just figure cybernetics are such a like-with-like comparison (permanent slot use, limit of 2 per person, more unique abilities than armour) that it's worth making the comparison. I also think the Y1 edition will boost the number of people with blood and titanium and i'd rather not limit the applicability of guides to those people. The point about disabling modules is a good one, though to be honest I don't tend to use them much myself. Everyone cuts corners in their budgets and manufacturing somewhere, and that's just one place were I tend to do so. I don't find myself walking into mist very often for example. As for the frenzy head, I'll be much more clear in my priest review, but I tend to agree it's the best. I checked and ALL my active priests in my current run have the frenzy head, simply because speed really is king in this game.

    I’m going to have to disagree about your opinion of the tier 1 head, it is a standard equip of my assault/ berserker units. It allows them to rapid clear adrenaline rush a group of enemies refresh one turn then not spend the next turn doing absolutely nothing. Considering how often I put my units in that situation it needs to go on my A team. I do however agree with most of everything else you’re saying.

    Mutogs and vehicles in general need a buff or the amount of space they take up on your vehicles needs to change. A mutog is not worth 3 soldiers in most cases. Neither are the vehicles once you reach mid to late game. If they allowed you to experiment and augment your vehicles and mutogs like you do your troops it might be better. I rarely build them and only use them for base defense.

    Great Video! Actually, I've two plus point for Tier 1 head and Tier 3 torso. Tier 1 for Berserker is absolutely useful, combined with Adrenaline Rush, gaining immunity to side effect of Adrenaline Rush. Tier 3 torso can be useful with some high-damaging pistol (1AP is somewhat useful), maybe for paralyzing targets?

    mixed the armoured head with, assault and berserker mix, and make sure they have strong arm, give them the Jericho machine gun, rapid clearance and adrenalin rush, and pop all your perk points into speed and will points, now you have a super fast guy that can every turn shoot his heavy gun for 1AP instead of 3AP and you gain 2AP per kill, I've done this a few times and this one load out can literally (ammo allowing) clear a map on his own, then even more so with a priest with frenzy

    The venom torso with the high power anu pistol might be somewhat intriguing? The torso accuracy would make the pistol accurate and it does a ton of damage. Sadly it takes 2 to fire. I guess if you had sniper as one of your classes you could use its quick aim ability to lower the shot to 1 ap. I suppose the light sniper rifle which does almost as much damage at the same ap would be more efficient when used with quick aim. The sniper rifle is not nearly as range limited. However, you have to build the light sniper and the anu pistols are easy to come by looting.

    Personally, the Heavy head gives you immunity to stun, you can use Adrenaline rush and won't get stunned the following turn. Isn't that nice? Started playing Phoenix point from a couple weeks and I am loving it. Every step forward I take there is something I can customize and some decision I can take. Also, referring to the T3 torso, I use it with a melee weapon on the second hand. So spikes from any distance (well, close distance) and melee if anyone gets close. I am still missing the T1 for regen but the poison stack, so if you can put 2-3 poison in one turn that's some massive damage. I agree on T2 torso, it's fairly good against myrmidon as they get stunned in 1 hit, but besides that, the stun attack is costly.

  • @Reverberon
    @Reverberon3 жыл бұрын

    Knocking aliens out with stun is sometimes easier than just killing them, especially when they start getting tougher armor. When I start floating genes I grow some of those living tanks for base defense.

  • @PerunAU

    @PerunAU

    3 жыл бұрын

    That's fair, though stun weapons are also pretty easy to carry. The idea of breeding mutogs to defend bases is a nifty idea for surplus mutagens. My normal approach has instead been to always get a team back in time but that relies on having a lot of active teams in fast moving aircraft.

    I could see the Resistor Head making some sense if it was immunity to poison and virus, but just taking half damage doesn't cut it.

  • @Mewobiba

    @Mewobiba

    3 жыл бұрын

    Haven't tried it out yet, but if it halves damage as it comes in (rather than when you take it), it renders it pretty much ignorable. Problem with e.g. virus is that if you take a 6 virus damage hit, you're gonna end up losing 6+5+4+3+2+1=21 willpower. If the head halves the incoming virus, you're gonna lose 3+2+1=6 willpower in total instead, which is less than a third and far less likely to make you panic. Ultimately, given the armor value I don't think it's a *bad* deal as such for assaults etc if it was the only mutation option, as the only other option in the same cheapness class would be random looted indie helmets with worse stats, but when the perceptor head is as good as it is there is little reason to use this.

    On one hand i want to like phoenix point, i don't have it but i have a lot of experience with this sort of Xcom type game. On the other... It seems mostly incomplete to me, and a friend who i disagree alot with, just believes the free aim system that throws out easy percentages makes it unplayable. I nowhere come close to fully agreeing with that, but with the way cybernetics and mutations are handeled, the way tier 3 weaponry is behind a whole DLC like they finished the game after the fact and made you pay for it again, and the complete lack of seeming dpeth behind the mutation mechanics alone. Much less how they bungled the diplomacy aspect to the point where your doing nice things for syndedrion so you can farm points where you can steal their airplanes and not go to war on you, and then still make friends with everyone with just more annoyance and fuss. Oh, but you still basically nuke at least two factions in whatever ending, because their is no compromise ending despite the fact that most players play the middle man between them. I can't buy it, it would need a mod that did as much for the enemy unknown long war, in terms of sheer balance overhaul and additions to the game to make me consider. To summarize I look at it like the Mutation tree seems, interesting mechanics wise, but seeming simplistic and incomplete. While i may not want it as it is, I'm glad your enjoying it, and I'm glad your documenting it in a way that I've seen no one else on the internet do so going into a complete breakdown on the mechanics and analysis strategy. versus a normal play through.

I think it will be better with a sort of buying the research with relation points or something similimar that way you can hit some techs before and feel gradually how you are becoming stronger. As a long time xcom enemy unknown and xcom 2 fan I really like this game. You should definitely give it a go yourself. It feels different and interesting to play. Ive already sunk 47 hours into the game and feel like theres still so much I haven't figured out. Compared to xcom this game is quite complex and has so many things to figure out that it does feel overwhelming at times but then there is that sensation of discovery as you do figure things out. In a sense its more like the long war mod that it gives you more options to start with and try to figure out and customize your soldiers. In base xcom all soldier classes pretty much work in a certain 1 or 2 ways and then you just unlock upgrades to them along the way. Phoenix point allows you to do so many things that are more or less optimal and in a lot of cases even doing the less optimal things make some sense.
