Phnom Penh 2023... Is This Still The WILD EAST?
This is the real Phnom Penh, capital of Cambodia. A city and country that is shaped by its tragic history.
In this video you’ll be taken on a tour of Phnom Penh which not only shows the sights, but gives an insight into the city beyond those.
It sets the stage with a quick overview of the horrors of the Khmer Rouge times at the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek (មជ្ឈមណ្ឌល ប្រល័យពូជសាសន៍ ជើងឯក). Without being aware of the genocide which happened there, it’s hard to understand the country as it is today.
We move forward with what became of the city in the post-Khmer Rouge times, and show some of the historic sights in the city such as Wat Phnom Daun Penh (វត្តភ្នំដូនពេញ), the Central Market, the National Museum (សារមន្ទីរជាតិ) and the Royal Palace (ព្រះ បរម រាជ វាំង ចតុម្មុខ មង្គល), offering a glimpse into Cambodia’s past and present.
We’ll step past the infamous Heart of Darkness nightclub and through Street 172 before soak up the sunset at Riverside.
Finally we’ll take a look at the current Chinese and foreign development in the city to see what it has become and where it could be heading, with it’s malls, high rise buildings, casinos and the almost deserted newly developed island, Koh Pich (កោះពេជ្រ).
Come along and I’ll show you much more than just the famous sights!

I’ll check out your channel when I have a little more time (last minute prep for another trip right now) but I’m certainly interested in the experiences of an expat living there. Do you ever go to Embargo and Riel Brewing? 2 of my favourite spots in the city with great folks!

Just the intro nearly made me cry like I did at that memorial nearly 10 years ago when I visited. My heart was breaking just taking in the horror of what had occured :( I really want Cambodia to thrive and blossom into the great nation it should have always been. Remember sitting at that same riverside bar too. Really need to head there with my wife as she's never been

I felt it impossible to make a video about Phnom Penh and Cambodia without including a short part about the past. I also with for Cambodia to thrive though I'm worried seeing the amount of money that appears to be flowing in from other countries. My favourite spot nowadays for a beer is Embargo, though that didn't make the video.

How can we trust the historical record when current events are so decisive for example the pandemic many people don't think it really happened. Perhaps denying the official account is forbidden thereby erasing all access to alternate retellings.

I am well travelled. Cambodia has heart and soul like nowhere else I have ever been. It's the people. If you show you respect and appreciate their culture, they will show you more humanity than any other culture I have ever known. Cambodia people are real. The west was like that 50 yrs ago but not any more.

Very interesting and insightful tour of the city. We spent a new years there once but we really were only there for a day or two and we stayed on the far side of the river away from the city and then rented a motorbike and took it off out to a Buddhist monastery on silk Island, I think it was called. Hope to visit again someday. This was a nice reminder of the good times we had there. ~JB

It really is an interesting city and one I keep returning to when I'm in the area. It's certainly still worth visiting and does still have a lot of its soul left.
You were wrong about the restaurant alongside the river in Koh pich island, it is similar to night market, it is only opening during evening to mid-night. So it is not close.

I too was there 2006, saw a shooting when up on balcony in walkabout. Went back 3 or 4 times. I loved Lakeside, long gone. Mixed feelings about going back, like BKK, sky scrapers don't do it anymore. Sihanookville looks decimated. But they say progress is progress.

I do kinda miss the Phnom Penh of years past and certainly lakeside though I still like visiting there for what it is now. Kampot was good when I visited there just before covid hit.
St. 172 gets a lot of young backpackers too, and there are also some good restaurants there. It’s more diverse than you mentioned.

Yeah that’s true actually, there’s some pretty cheap hotels there. Forgot I even stayed there myself one night but didn’t really like it so moved on. I guess for the younger backpacker scene maybe it replaced lackside.

No videos I’m afraid. I tend to just shoot during daylight hours as my camera equipment is bad in low light. Nightlife depends what sort of thing you’re into of course. Personally Embargo and Reil Brewing are my top spots in Phnom Penh (I like craft beer and fairly relaxed nightlife). The area which Embargo is in has really come up with a lot of bars and restaurants in little alleys. Street 308 also has a lot going on nowadays. Riverside was an old classic but I think it’s not fun like it used to be.

6:31 It's called Ganesha, Hindu gods represent knowledge and prosperity, son of Shiva. According to the Hindu mythodology, Ganesha was born with a human head same as others. But someone slandered him for some huge mistakes, and his father beheaded him. Later Shiva found out that Ganesha was innocent, so he ordered his angels to find any dead body of an animal with the head to the east, and the angels found a dead body of an elephant, they then used it as his head.

This article is about to show the interesting facts about Cambodia. Ankor wat Facing to the west, because our ancestors built this monument for the future even, when the second sun comes ,the west will become to be the east , and a very even will happen in Cambodia. You know a richest country in the last day ,that your Bible says An island in the east and the island in the west, where ? It's Cambodia , not Philippines. Our ancestors still alive, they are preparing for a time comes, they do meditation and live in a deep inside of mountains. Sorry i forgot how English called it. (Kanal) We are Khmer but the word khmer was written in complex style ,was read as khem mac rac not khmer. When Thai occupied Cambodia they read this word as khmen(r) not in the complex style, in normal style, so the word khmer was born , so we have to names khmer and Khem mac rac. Khmer had the killing field because of Vietnamese they pretending to be khmer, impostor like Pol Pot , even Hun Sen , too. Now Hun Sen is pushing khmer to very danger of nuclear by giving land to China, our ancestors, too predicted that...
It’s no longer wild east. Well atleast for the capital and other big city of the country.
I don’t get the happy pizza thing

I hear you. The rapid expansionism and foreign investment has a big risk of taking not just the architecture but the culture from Phnom Penh and Cambodia. Covid may have set things back but the Chinese influence is growing ever stronger I think.
What I don't really understand is the WEST countries politics still oppress Cambodia until without thinking about how horrific story that this country and her people gone through , it seems like they want to step on this country throat till it death at some point. Shame on the WEST humanitarian and cruelty spirit toward Cambodia people

How are they suppressing you? Your government is suppressing your own people. Same in the West, btw.
Who is Khom? The latest research done by Chiang Mai University in collaboration with an international research team has examined DNA samples from Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Burma and Cambodia, compared with DNA samples from ancient humans found in archaeological excavations of each country. Compared to the current ASEAN DNA As a result, Thailand is close to Vietnam, Laos and Indonesia, but Burma and Cambodia are separated. People who lived during the Khom civilization is a pedigree South Indian Mon which is not found in Cambodia This clearly indicates that Khmer is not Khom and Khom Warman was completely eradicated from the present Khmer faction, which had no Khmer ancestry. This coincides with the story of Nai Tang Wan (Mr.Sweet Melon) Rebellion who established himself as a later king with the eradication of the Varman dynasty and theories. Diva Sarug Khmer according to the Sap Bak inscription It was just a savage village recruited for slave labor. (China-Zhou Da Guang's record)

Theres too many buildings and no where near enough people yet. I assume much of it is laundering. Diamond Island for example is a ghost town near anough. I returned after 10 years myself. Massive difference. I miss the old days but there seemed to be a lot more younger kids doing well, in school or Uni and Barangs arent attractions anymore. Which is good. As long as theres hop for the youth there (even if theres still plenty without) and theres a lot more now than there was.
