Philodendron Paraiso Verde care and propagation

This species never cease to amaze me by its beauty, ease of growth, and speed of propagation. In this video I show you the care (bottomline: I needs a lot of light for the variegations to come through) and propagation (with updates of course!). I also share a bit about extrafloral nectaries and why some of our aroids produce them. This is a very long propagation video because process of air layering is so complicated. But I share so much knowledge that will increase your propagation success rate! Stick around to see a very satisfying update!

So much REAL KNOWLEDGE in one video! 99% plant people just show cutting or whatever thye are doing and never explain why. I guess its because thye just copy what others were doing without even knowing why. Subbed for life.

“Misting really tickles my pickles” 😂😂😂 Me too brother! Me too! ❤❤😂😂 This is what I’m afraid of about using moss poles, the roots getting so tangled in and immovable from the pole. I need to get over it, or just stick to stakes or wood boards I’m grateful you filmed the whole process, even that you sped it up, really gives a good idea to what to expect Omgosh you live in such a stunning part of the world!! I wanna see Indonesia so bad! And Thailand! And Australia! Lol

I just found a Philodendron Paraiso Verde and she’s pretty tall and pretty but she has very low variegation. I assume she wasn’t getting all the lighting she needs. When I heard you talking about this at 2:28 I thought about the ride home I kept looking at those light brown spots at one moment I started to try to scratch it off thinking it was baby scales or something lol I am going to propagate her so she can push out more variegated leaves and I will have another plant. Thank you

WHOAAAAAAA!!! Your verde is so striking!!! Thanks for sharing...it is good to see that it can keep its variegation even if you give it bright light. Everything I have heard speaks against it. I actually had a plant that with a leaf that had reverted to a solid green when it was in bright light and I assumed it was because of the lighting. Do you know if it throws of solid green leaves, if it is able to grow variegated leaves again? You did a fabulous job and it’s awesome to see that they all are growing so aggressively. Thanks for sharing I learned a lot from this video.

Warm temperature and bright light will encourage new leaves to variegate. Also when you fertilize use a balanced NPK ratio instead of something with high Nitrogen, because nitrogen promotes chlorophyll, the green in the leaves.

Hi there, what an informative and detailed video - please make more in the future. So your conclusion is the more sun the paraiso gets the more variegation it gets and the less likely it will revert to green? I have heard people saying that in winter they revert to non variegated and in spring and summer lovely variegated leaves pop up again (we are in Europe) - whats your personal experience with this plant so far? Thanks!

More light gives more variegation for sure. I noticed that when I moved this plant around😀

Thk you for you sharing where i am just started my Philodendron plants... can know if the cutting variegation is not good, will the new leaf continue the "not beautiful variegation" or will depend ? such as...?? Thk you for your reply or advice... Thk you.

Light will determine variegation. More light = more variegation.

  • @onlyplants

Could be a young plant thats why. A lot of philodendrons are a bit rosette-like with the growth pattern when younger and then they start vining especially when they have thicker stem and bigger leaves.

Hi Sam , may I ask if this paraiso usually have small ants living in it? I’ve seen a few times ants in it and got rid of them and they just came back to this plant but not other aroids.

  • @onlyplants

Its the extrafloral nectaries from philodendrons that attract them. I believe the ants are going to protect the plant from pests in this case 😀

They need to mature up. Here are some tips - good care - good light - let them climb up and adhere to a mosspole or wall - fertilize sensibly without overdoing it
